My terfing energy has been focussed elsewhere in recent months and I haven't been here or on TwiX or social media much. Now I've taken responsibility for tweeting/ comms on behalf of a small but potentially significant LGB group and I discover that there seems to be something going on — another schism — in GC world. Jane Clare Jones's name seems to be coming up a lot. Something seems to have gone on but I can't work out what.

If it was my own account I'd just ignore, but the followers of this account are bringing it up and seem to expect an opinion to be expressed or a side to be taken. Also I'm seeing a lot about 'ultras' and 'lites', which is new to me. Can anyone enlighten me? I need to tread carefully.

A yet the self appointed gate-keepers of feminism use phrases like "domestic zombies".

That's the point of the discussion, it's these particular people who seem to think they have some kind of right to decide what good feminists think and other women should shut up.

That is ONE tweet aimed at KJK after many many months where she had insulted many women.
She has said very nasty things to me on social media, but these are never repeated by anyone. One woman hits back and her comment is regurgitated for years. It is tiring.

I don't think JB or JCJ are mothers, are they? I was also told that JCJ has never worked. But I'm not on Twitter. Is that the case?

Julie Bindel is not a mother although she is a carer. I do not know about JCJ. I know some of the other women often name checked are mothers.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/12/2024 12:39

It wasn't aimed at KJK, it was aimed at many women like us here on FWR.

It was not.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/12/2024 12:41

It is this kind of comment from certain women that has led to them being called "head girls" by women involved in grassroots campaigns.

CandyMaker · 17/12/2024 12:41

But I get tired at the constant insults thrown at women like me. Supporters of KJK never seem to see any issue with that.
Any insults aimed at supporters of KJK and all hell breaks loose.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/12/2024 12:41

Yes, it was. It was not just aimed at KJK. It's plural. Stop spreading misinformation @CandyMaker

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/12/2024 12:43

It was not "KJK is a domesticated zombie". It was "this group of women are domesticated zombies.

UrsulasHerbBag · 17/12/2024 10:13

Thank you candy! I appreciate that. I think you are right they just want me off their books and don’t care where they put me. There is a glaring hole in supporting women back to the workplace which wouldn’t be there if women weren’t the first out of the workplace when it comes to child care. Women are almost the only line of defence for raising children and that is definitely a feminist issue! This has been a great thread I feel a bit less alone seeing all the other posters from different walks of life having the same experiences as me. I think I should set up an agency for supporting mums and women back into work. There’s definitely a need for it!

Job centres and most government schemes aimed at getting people into work were set up to get people off benefits. You may get individual staff within them that are more caring, but that is not their aim.
Once you realise that, you realise why they will push you into any job. Its not about something that fits your skills and previous earnings. It is literally, she stopped claiming benefits so a win.
If you are looking at specific careers you either need to get advice from previous contacts within that industry, preferably who do recruitment. Or from paid career advisers who specialise in your industry.

CandyMaker · 17/12/2024 12:48

And ageism is tough. I know there are always threads on MN where lots of women claim that they never experience ageism in the workplace and are valued for their expertise. That has not been my experience. It is fine with women my age, but a lot of younger people do discount older women both when recruiting and in the workplace.

AlisonDonut · 17/12/2024 12:57

Sorry I'm in a car park but has anyone got a link to the domesticated zombies quote. I remember at the time thinking 'eh?'. I thought it was aimed at mumsnetters and the like.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/12/2024 12:58

Yes @AlisonDonut I have, not to Ditum's original tweet because she deleted it, but a screenshot of both.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/12/2024 13:00

I think Ditum also had her arse handed to her on a Mumsnet thread about the same time. Many of these women aren't fans of us!

Calliecarpa · 17/12/2024 13:01

To clarify, the insult that was specifically aimed at KJK was 'poundshop Marine le Pen', by Sarah Ditum on TwiX.

The 'domesticated zombies' insult was not aimed specifically at KJK, as should be perfectly obvious from the grammar (it's clearly plural, not 'a domesticated zombie') and was written on TwiX by Ruth Serwotka. She was responding to a post by Sarah Ditum, again, about women who think they're feminists 'because they know what sex is'. See attached screenshot. Really nasty, playground stuff.

ETA: Ah, I see I'm too late and someone's already posted it!

Another one who had to give up work to homeschool. I am just trying to get back to work, I have no confidence, I feel completely devalued and unseen. My CV has a huge 6 year gap and the job centre told me to put “homemaker” on it. Who is going to employ an uneducated (no degrees to fall back on) 47 year old? My previous well paid career was in finance (industry specific dated qualifications) things have moved on the males who didn’t have to take a break are all Senior management on 6 figure salaries. Funnily enough everyone keeps telling me to apply to work on the till at B&M or get a little cleaning job. That is what society sees for me…until I am needed to care for my elderly parents then I will be useful again but only as an unpaid carer.

I'm sorry to hear your confidence is low. From an employer's position (though I'm sure it varies by sector):

Women with experience of caring for and raising children make great staff. Usually that life experience is invaluable in developing transferable skills - organisation, diplomacy, tenacity, patience, creativity, commitment, etc. I tend to see mothers returning to the workplace as likely to be very resourceful, dependable, and sensible. It's a plus, not a minus.

I have had women coming back and apologising for a 'gap' on their CV. And yes, often they are lacking in confidence, because it's a significant readjustment. But worth bearing in mind that sometimes the person interviewing you is also someone who's done that caring and knows exactly what is involved.

Bon courage!

CandyMaker · 17/12/2024 13:04

Thanks. I think I am getting confused about another tweet.#

It is clearly not aimed at mumsnetters in general. It is aimed at those who know what biological sex is, call themselves feminists, but do not understand feminism.
I would not use insults. Despite having many thrown at me over the years, I do try and rise above it.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/12/2024 13:07

The problem is that women's experience is not valued. If a man took a career gap and went to another country and did some kind of community project that would be seen as a positive. Raising the next generation (often getting involved with or running community projects at he same time) is seen as easy, when we all know it's not at all. Yes, there is ageism too which men can experience but there is also discrimination specifically against mothers imo.

Those skills are overlooked and ignored. When I was in my 20s I did some policy development work for a government department, there were no mothers there at all. One senior woman, who didn't have kids, older men who've never done childcare and bright 20 somethings fresh out of uni with no knowledge of the pointy end of life

Look at the policies during COVID that said two children out of school during the second lockdown couldn't go on a walk together whilst 50% of the class was in school. Literally insane, ignorant of child well-being and flat out cruel.

That's before you get to the more serious safeguarding failures for women and children. Obvious that policies were made by men or people with no experience of life! And society is worse off. I know so many women sidelined after a career gap, who could bring enormous value to the economy. Capable, bright women who society relies on to get essential things done yet doesn't value in the workplace. The untapped potential is huge. @UrsulasHerbBag sign me up to your agency!

themostspecialelfintheworkshop · 17/12/2024 13:48

Oh and @ArabellaScott can I come and work for you 😁

illinivich · 17/12/2024 14:07

Feminism seem to be the only rights movement where a module is needed to understand it. Ive never heard anyone accuse gay men of not understand gay rights.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/12/2024 14:09

What @illinivich said.

Domestic zombies are women who know what biological sex is, call themselves feminists, but aren't feminists?

Why aren't they feminists? Is it because they haven't read or grasped the political theory that is feminism?

Good lord. That's got to be tons and tons of women. And especially women who have been woken up to feminism by transgender ideology.

All these new recruits damned by not reading the right books.

Can you please for the love of all things Gerbil explain who exactly is allowed to be a feminist if it isn't anyone who knows what sex is, calls themselves feminists but yet doesn't understand what feminism is. Because that wipes out anyone who hasn't done a feminism degree and you can't mean that surely?
