I was going to screen shot it but it was too long...work colleague has just posted it under "how hard is it to be kind and just accept everyone?"

I can't even begin to decipher what it's trying to say tbh - that there are lots of different variations on sex?

Oh wow.

They've listed a bunch of DSD, biological facts and then said
"So what does all this mean? - it means that you can have a perfectly typical male (or female) body with no DSD whatsoever and believe yourself to be the opposite sex"

This is basically "born in the wrong body" stuff but written out into a hundred paragraphs using DSD's as "evidence" (Nonvidence)....

Circumferences · 09/12/2024 12:41

I think it's gender ideology myth number 6:
That because people with a DSD exist, that means men can be women.

mistification · 09/12/2024 13:52

But people with DSD are still male or female in terms of chromosomes aren't they? So it's a bit of a non argument. Got to be honest I tied myself up in knots reading it, but I guess that was the idea 😂

HA! I saw this a few weeks ago. A long standing fb "friend" posted it and then deleted me after I pointed out that it was utter bollocks. I had thought better of him before that. Makes me sad really. So many idiots our there.

From the ever wise Drs Emma Hilton and Colin Wright:

In humans, as in most animals or plants, an organism’s biological sex corresponds to one of two distinct types of reproductive anatomy that develop for the production of small or large sex cells—sperm and eggs, respectively—and associated biological functions in sexual reproduction. In humans, reproductive anatomy is unambiguously male or female at birth more than 99.98% of the time. The evolutionary function of these two anatomies is to aid in reproduction via the fusion of sperm and ova. No third type of sex cell exists in humans, and therefore there is no sex “spectrum” or additional sexes beyond male and female.
Sex is binary.
There is a difference, however, between the statements that there are only two sexes (true) and that everyone can be neatly categorised as either male or female (false). The existence of only two sexes does not mean sex is never ambiguous. But intersex individuals are extremely rare, and they are neither a third sex nor proof that sex is a “spectrum” or a “social construct.” Not everyone needs to be discretely assignable to one or the other sex in order for biological sex to be functionally binary. To assume otherwise—to confuse secondary sexual traits with biological sex itself—is a category error.

Is sex a spectrum? Or is sex binary? | Fair Play For Women

Are there more than two sexes? Is sex a spectrum? Where do intersex people fit in? Here's what biologists say...

In answer to the work colleague, do they want the answer on scale of 1-10, or do they want a mathematical formula so they can work out how hard it is themselves. 😂

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 09/12/2024 16:04

Sex is a binary and to do with reproductive function which is why the specific dsd my partner has means he is infertile, doesn't prevent him being male though as it is a dsd than can only be suffered by male people (and suffer is the correct term in this case)

UltraLiteLife · 09/12/2024 16:27

People with DSDs/VSDs have asked that they, and their sometimes traumatic medical histories, should not be for point-scoring in essentially political discussions.

The post to which the OP refers feels ill-informed and counter to that reasonable request.

lcakethereforeIam · 09/12/2024 16:33

All those words just to say she's happy for adult male strangers to shower with her daughter.

JumpingPumpkin · 09/12/2024 20:42

The oddest thing about those posts which are purely about unusual genetics are that they seem to be written to support people choosing to pretend to be the opposite sex.

It's completely irrelevant!

shrinkingthiswinter · 09/12/2024 22:23

It's often difficult to define the boundaries of categories. For example 'tall' and 'short'. Where do they start and end? But that doesn't mean you can claim a tall person is short.

And sex isn't a continuum like height. You really are either male or female, and DSDs (differences or disorders of sexual development) usually mean infertility. It sounds nicer to say differences, but there are lots of differences in sexual development (e.g. variations in genital appearance) which aren't DSDs. Differences only get classified as DSDs when development is disordered, which basically means reproduction not working. So really not an argument for reproductive sexes being unstable categories.

EdithStourton · 09/12/2024 22:30

That appeared on my FB.
I got a short way into it and thought, Ah, a DSD is not a trans thing...
And buggered off to look at the rest of the crap on my feed.

Grammarnut · 10/12/2024 18:05

@Circumferences I think you are right. A whole word salad that conflates DSDs (which are sex specific - and the article shows this) with 'sex is a spectrum and you don't know your chromosomes so 'feelz' count for mor than biology'.
