Spain to ban trans women from female sports

Spain’s ruling Socialist party intends to ban transgender women from competing in female sports and to remove the Q+ from the LGBTQ+ acronym.

The Socialists, led by <a class="break-all" href="https://archive.is/o/N4iZQ/www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/04/28/spains-socialist-prime-minister-to-decide-whether-to-resign/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Pedro Sánchez, the prime minister, included plans to limit participation in female sports to “people with a female biological sex” in a policy document decided on at the party’s congress over the weekend.

The decision also to remove Q+ from a plan to protect sexual and gender minorities from the impact of social inequality sparked fury from LGBTQ+ activists and politicians from Left-wing partners of Mr Sánchez’s minority government. However, it drew support from some feminist campaign groups.

The amendments to the draft policy framework were introduced by a feminist faction within the Socialist party that has fought against an ultra-liberal approach to transgender rights under Mr Sánchez’s administration.

Coming from Spain this is quite the turn around, I hope they succeed. 🤞

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 04/12/2024 07:58

Fantastic news. Chipping away at this nonsense on bit at a time.

kiterunning · 04/12/2024 08:00

Wow- Spain seemed so captured.
More great news! The world is waking up now.

DiaAssolellat · 04/12/2024 08:01

Molt content d’aixó 😊

Igmum · 04/12/2024 08:25

Brilliant news. Viva Espana!

HoneyButterPopcorn · 04/12/2024 08:59

Spain? Spain? Blimey.

Ramblingnamechanger · 04/12/2024 14:16

Feminists have been working to change things for a long time . I really hope the rest of the nonsense laws come crashing down very soon. Sport is something that everyone has opinions on…female spaces for women only, less so as they still remember separation of the sexes in Francos time.

Does anyone have an archive of the article?

I don't see how a government can "remove the Q+". It can stop using the term in its own public pronouncements and literature, but it can't tell the nation how to speak. But this is the same Spain (and same govt) where male soldiers are name-changing (not even 'presenting') as women to gain financial benefits? Either way, if the Socialist Party in Spain is having a re-think, I guess that's good news.

I'm not sure that Spain is captured at all......the socialists did not even get the largest share of the vote at the election, yet they managed to cling on to government by forming a coalition with extremists.

The conservatives got the majority vote and would have blocked Self Id should they have formed a government. The spanish women's movement is very strong, and they take no shit.

Thank you, that is wonderful, especially considering how the Spanish system is so ridiculous that it has allowed everyday male soldiers to say they have become women and claim military women’s financial incentives.

Dollybantree · 04/12/2024 17:35

Hooray 🥳

newtlover · 04/12/2024 17:39

I was trying to remember about those financial incentives @ScrollingLeaves
does anyone have a link to that story?
it really did make plain how ridiculous the whole thing is

So what does it change?

There 2 different motions and are explained in the OP.

One is that sex in sport must be based on biology.

The other is saying Q is a political belief and has nothing to do with being L or G or B or T and should not be used.

I'm not sure why you mean by "they managed to cling on to government by forming a coalition with extremists", unless you are arguing that smaller parties that are currently supporting the Spanish government are extremist because they are advocating for Catalan/Basque independence.

They are neither far-left nor far-right (the far-right party is Vox).

Some of those in the coalition had been recently released from prison for terrorist activities, I understand. My son lives in Barcelona, and the Catalan separatists are not generally a popular bunch, he says.

The PP had opportunities to form the government after the election, but after a lengthy and messy process ultimately failed to secure enough support from other parties to win the investiture.

The political landscape prior to the election clearly showed that PP was in a much better position than PSOE, but they still failed.

PSOE's Sánchez, on the other hand, was able to win re-election in the first ballot of investiture with an absolute majority.

Even if the leader of the PP, Feijóo, became the new Prime Minister, we can't be entirely certain that the self-ID laws ("Ley Trans") would have been rolled back; a lot of PP lawmakers have been rather apathetic to the issue instead of actively appealing Ley Trans, so it's possible they don't have enough political will to reverse the laws.

Sánchez himself does not appear to be extremely pro-Ley Trans, so things might change depending on how much weight is given to concerns about Ley Trans.

newtlover · 04/12/2024 19:40

thank you

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 04/12/2024 20:14

So the government has suddenly realised humans can’t change sex? Maybe this has been helped along by all those soldiers who were ‘identifying’ as female in order to get better pensions and en-suite accommodation. Well done, lads!

Thelnebriati · 04/12/2024 20:47

I'm a bit salty that they made sports single sex before prisons and DV shelters but I'll take it as a win. Not sure how they are going to implement it though. If a man has been given ID that says he is female, how will that work?
