Fabulous closing from AO'N.

I note the judge today thanked everyone for their assistance, but unlike yesterday did not state that the SG and EHRC submissions were 'very helpful'.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 27/11/2024 16:12

After all the endless umming and ahhing and endless references to Section 9 certificated laydeez it was a relief to hear some plain speaking about the negative impact on women's rights.
It was a shame that the points about the predatory "women must accept being intimately searched by men claiming to be women" were skimmed over by the EHRC guy. "Hasn't aged well" doesn't really encapsulate the extremes of state sanctioned sexual abuse of women by men in a uniform.

Bannedontherun · 27/11/2024 16:12

Well he did sock it to them and hammered down the EHRC arguments, and that no Strasbourg court has ever set aside womens rights.

He also said it is the job of the court to give clarity to poorly written legislation.

So we are in with a chance.

CriticalCondition · 27/11/2024 16:13

What a finish! The camera was at the back so we couldn't see faces but judging from the comforting hugs on the public benches I suspect much of the room had tears in their eyes.

Yes there was definitely far more emphasis on the VERY of the very helpful after BC’s submissions yesterday.

Closing speech was like he drank the distillation of the greatest hits of FWR, opened his mouth and only stopped to take a quick top up. Well done that man.

Boiledbeetle · 27/11/2024 16:16

I'm going to have to spend this evening reading all the Tribunal Tweets from the last two days I think to pick up all the missed bits!

Olderbadger1 · 27/11/2024 16:17

AON rocks!

highame · 27/11/2024 16:19

"Hasn't aged well" doesn't really encapsulate the extremes of state sanctioned sexual abuse of women by men in a uniform.

I thought this was good. I think there is a real understanding that at the point these laws were being made, cases taken etc. everyone was on the bandwagon and clarity was overridden by loud, we're discriminated against, noise.

Iamnotalemming · 27/11/2024 16:24

I had tears in my eyes watching the final reply from the appellants and broke into a spontaneous round of applause even though I was entirely on my own at the time.

I thought there was night and day between the parties' abilities to argue their cases and respond to the justices' questions.

I have faith (which I hope is not misplaced) in the SC to deliver a sensible judgment.

mcduffy · 27/11/2024 16:28

thank you all for the commentary. What's next? When do we hear?

Bagpussnotbothered · 27/11/2024 16:28

I just caught on this thread and TT on Twitter. I agree with @ThreeWordHarpy - it felt like AON was channeling this board towards the end. What do you think the chances are that he's got a copy of BoiledBeetle's poetry book?

I'm going to be on tenterhooks until the verdict.

I’m reading my way through this thread with great interest - thank you everyone who’s keeping us abreast of events.

But I just needed to say that in my lifetime, there have been court cases to determine if:

  • women should be allowed remain in their jobs after getting married
  • women should be allowed enter financial agreements without their husband’s consent
  • women should be allowed have access to contraception
  • women should be allowed divorce their husbands
  • women should be allowed keep their children if they are in a same-sex relationship
  • women should be allowed access to abortion abroad
  • women should be allowed access to abortion in their own country

I’m sure there are cases I’ve forgotten but these are the really big ones that come to mind for me.

And now we have a court case that is trying to decide if:

  • women should be allowed to exist as a separate and distinct legal category from men and keep for themselves the rights they’ve won for their sex.

Its just all gets a bit much when I think of how many court cases there have been in my lifetime to determine my rights (distinct from what a man/men will allow me to have) under the law.

It was only in the early 90s that raping your wife became an offence. 😞

larklane17 · 27/11/2024 16:29

That was legal history there. Fantastic to be able to watch it live.
And thanks good women here for your excellent company and commentary and poetry..
And TT Flowers

Decision is expected in Spring 2025.

Appalonia · 27/11/2024 16:33

I kept thinking how easily AON was able to answer the questions put to him by the Judges yesterday compared to the obfiscating, prevaricating and umming from the lawyers today...

Well, FWS do have copies for purposes of selling them to raise funds OR giving them to people such as him to show how pissed off women are, so.... I'd like to think he has a copy 😁

Shortshriftandlethal · 27/11/2024 16:34

How's it currently being spun in TRA LA land?

Janie143 · 27/11/2024 16:34

Much as I hate to admit it I think the fact that 2 men were representing the FWS side made it all the more powerful

If there's ever a good opportunity I make a point of telling my dc's female friends about the things that women couldn't do during my lifetime. They are all in their 20s and are shocked at the financial stuff - eg single woman not having the right to take out a mortgage. I'm never sure how the marital rape bit lands, but they get told that too. They need to be warned, I think, about how recent many of their rights are. I wish they could realise how fragile their rights are, too.

I agree. A female silk trying to do that patriarchy bit AON did yesterday would be too easily dismissed as having a rant.

greatpurplepolkadots · 27/11/2024 16:46

Slightly confused looking at some of the tweets- did Adrien say that he disagreed with Sex Matters on three points?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/11/2024 16:47

Yes, on points of law. They made different submissions.

I remember my mother being really angry that she wasn't allowed a credit card despite having a job and own bank account. My father refused to go to the bank to give his permission as he said she didn't need one. Of course she did need one - she was trying to leave the fucker but he was making her spend her "pin" money on food for us all so she couldn't.

I also remember being very relieved on hearing rape in marriage was a criminal offence.

"We are definitely going to win still but TWAW and I'm a lesbian, fuck the Scottish government, why weren't any trans people there"
