MrsOvertonsWindow · 27/11/2024 16:03

Think you call that a barnstorming finish!

RobinEllacotStrike · 27/11/2024 16:04

That's it! They'll go away and the next we hear is their decision, I think

Please mention how vouyerism laws fall apart for women. Please.

highame · 27/11/2024 16:04

He very clearly said that the court should sort this mess out. Which I think is what we want. Parliament will never be able to achieve clarify on this.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/11/2024 16:05

He mentioned the right for women to be free of the male gaze @RedToothBrush

ILikeDungs · 27/11/2024 16:04

Gosh! So many important issues simply not considered in the depth and with the consideration they deserve. We'll have to trust the panel really does go away and read through all of the transcripts and submissions in full.

Signalbox · 27/11/2024 16:05

He's basically saying the courts shouldn't allow women's fundamental rights to be affected by vague and poorly written legislation and there should be a presumption in favour of upholding women's rights unless the legislation is extremely clear that women should be disadvantaged.

chilling19 · 27/11/2024 16:05

@Boiledbeetle

Fab poem. 👍

Shortshriftandlethal · 27/11/2024 16:06

The ECHR just wants the matter passed back to parliament.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 27/11/2024 16:06

That was wonderful. Also very emotional.

Signalbox · 27/11/2024 16:06

I hope the judges don't push this back on the government. The idea that Labour would get this right is very unlikely.

highame · 27/11/2024 16:07

The ECHR just wants the matter passed back to parliament.

They acknowledge it's a mess

Zestylemo · 27/11/2024 16:07

Can we watch that on replay?

DontStopMe · 27/11/2024 16:08

Wow, that did very much deserve a standing ovation.

Mochudubh · 27/11/2024 16:08

Yes, I came in around 2.30 and tried scrolling back but it just kept pinging back to live.

HotSlippergirl · 27/11/2024 16:09

Zestylemo · 27/11/2024 16:07

Can we watch that on replay?

Yeah I missed it and it sounded great!

Signalbox · 27/11/2024 16:09

IANAL but having sat through both days of this I predict it's unlikely that the SG will win this case outright. It'll either be a FWS win or a push back to Parliament.

Madcats · 27/11/2024 16:10

I hope their Noble Lords all retire to Parliament for a hefty dram.

I've only managed to catch the afternoon, but the contrast in counsel was striking.

The Supreme Court has a YouTube Channel, so hopefully it will get uploaded here at some point: https://www.youtube.com/@UKSupremeCourt/videos

I’m reading my way through this thread with great interest - thank you everyone who’s keeping us abreast of events.

But I just needed to say that in my lifetime, there have been court cases to determine if:

  • women should be allowed remain in their jobs after getting married
  • women should be allowed enter financial agreements without their husband’s consent
  • women should be allowed have access to contraception
  • women should be allowed divorce their husbands
  • women should be allowed keep their children if they are in a same-sex relationship
  • women should be allowed access to abortion abroad
  • women should be allowed access to abortion in their own country

I’m sure there are cases I’ve forgotten but these are the really big ones that come to mind for me.

And now we have a court case that is trying to decide if:

  • women should be allowed to exist as a separate and distinct legal category from men and keep for themselves the rights they’ve won for their sex.

Its just all gets a bit much when I think of how many court cases there have been in my lifetime to determine my rights (distinct from what a man/men will allow me to have) under the law.

thank you for this list.

Incredibly everyone knew who/what a woman was when they were sacking them for being married, opening bank accounts, accessing contraception, applying for divorce, being persecuted as lesbians, and seeking to terminate a pregnancy.

but these days so many people are prepared to lie and treat it as a massive mystery.
