Erm.. I think you always get the wool over the right needle in some way after you’ve put it through the stitch on the left needle.

This is as I understand it and may be quite wrong:
When knitting English-style I wrap the yarn over the right needle either by dropping the right needle and using my right hand to move the yarn (throwing) or the method you describe (flicking - see Hazel Tindall.)
When Continental knitting I have the yarn looped over the index finger of my left hand. I manoeuvre the right needle into the stitch on the left needle, round the yarn and off the left needle. I don’t let go of either needle. I hold the yarn in the same way when crocheting.

Continental knitting is meant to be faster but Hazel Tindall has won the World’s fastest knitter competition and I think she flicks the yarn.

I flick the yarn with my right hand - I have tried to learn continental knitting, and I can knit that way (slowly) but can't purl. I am not really fast, but fast enough.

I'm sorry you are poorly, Boily - I hope you feel better soon. There is a particularly vicious bug doing the rounds at the moment.

The Moira Deeming news is excellent - we can hang up the bunting.

lcakethereforeIam · 12/12/2024 12:25

I don't know how they managed it on Bluestocking booze but some of the quokkas got so hammered last night they're actually hungover, the rest are still part-tay-ing!

The gerbils are doing sterling duty with ice packs, aspirin, eyemasks and strong black coffee.

Chersfrozenface · 12/12/2024 13:30

Received wisdom:
A. There are things you need to let go of and get rid of.
B. Having done so, you will feel better.

My findings on the subject:
A. Yes, indeed there are.
B. Having agreed that it is necessary and done the letting go and the getting rid, no, actually I don't.

Could I subside in a corner with a hot chocolate and a tin of biscuits, please?

FuzzyPuffling · 12/12/2024 13:33

Aw bless you @Chersfrozenface. I think it takes time for that internal adjustment to happen. Good on you for starting the process; it's not easy. X

lcakethereforeIam · 12/12/2024 13:35

Yes, there's a spot in a squishy armchair by the window and near the fireplace. You can look out the window, if you wish, the snow covered grounds look amazing. The capybara is still atop the meadow tree and will wave back. Gerbils are on standby to massage your temples or feet. Or just to leave you alone until you need something.

Hurry up or your hot chocolate might get cold.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/12/2024 13:40

Depending what sort of thing it is, it may sometimes be necessary to do some appropriate processing.

DeanElderberry · 12/12/2024 13:58

I have had men clearing out my gutters, replacing slipped slates, removing extraneous vegetation and fixing droopy bits of soffits. Possibly of soffits. Of something that had droopy bits. This afternoon they will do the emergency chimney repairs they came to do.

And in a few weeks time they will come back and do the other running repairs that have been neglected since my father got ill.

Such a relief.

Pity a cat got so traumatised by strangers outside the window that it peed where no cat should pee, but these things happen.

If no gerbil is up to bringing me some tea, may I go behind the bar and make a pot myself?

MarieDeGournay · 12/12/2024 15:36

No you're grand, Deano, the quokkas are sleeping it off now so the gerbils are free to make you a nice pot of Barry'sSmile

Turn the moment gold.

I gather the ad has been heard - not yet by me.

'fixing droopy bits of soffits. Possibly of soffits. Of something that had droopy bits.'

My dear Dean, we've just had our soffits taken off & replaced, & I still don't have the faintest idea what they are or what they do or what they look like.😁

lcakethereforeIam · 12/12/2024 16:18

I had a job were I took phone calls from people and soffit often came up. I was never sure that either party knew what we meant. It was just <gestures vaguely at the eaves> that!

ifIwerenotanandroid · 12/12/2024 16:23

Exactly. My neighbours tend to stand next to their house, wave a hand at the eaves, say, "We need to do the soffits," & everyone else tuts & nods as though we all understand.

These things... are they emotional or outside world?

Anyway, have a corner.

Soffits are the bits ( often wooden) under your guttering/ edge of your roof. They are parallel to the ground. Fascias are similar but behind the guttering at right angles to the ground.

At least that's my memory from my building construction lectures!

DeanElderberry · 12/12/2024 16:43

Thanks Puffers. So it is soffits. Apart from today's wind-and rain damaged one, there's the ones that starlings have been sneaking behind, gradually enlarging the access holes. They'll get a shock next Spring. (Though I will get a few nest boxes installed).

FuzzyPuffling · 12/12/2024 16:47

The starlings thank you for the nest boxes. They may pay a visit to the Bluestocking to thank you in person.

AlisonDonut · 12/12/2024 16:53

Can I run round the bar shouting yippee as there was a Black Woodpecker in my garden today? Firstly it was warm enough to do some work in the garden, secondly we cleared an area that has been bugging me for months and thirdly, a Black Woodpecker!!!

They are not migratory so hopefully it is here to stay. I'm stoked.

MarieDeGournay · 12/12/2024 16:56

DeanElderberry · 12/12/2024 16:02

I know the ad - but I couldn't remember what it was advertising - the mark of an enjoyably memorable but ultimately failed ad! Fortunately, Barry's Tea doesn't need any advertising, right?Wink

I would support a ban on ads for alcohol on television - as long as they make an exception for this one, which is an annual treat this time of year.Smile

FuzzyPuffling · 12/12/2024 16:59

Hurrah Alison. Isn't it lovely when you have a new and welcome visitor.

lcakethereforeIam · 12/12/2024 17:00

I'm not jealous. I wonder if they'll ever show up in the UK? I think they're too sedentary for it to be likely.

DeanElderberry · 12/12/2024 17:22

Live in hope, we had no (0) ((zero)) woodpeckers of any kind in Ireland until 2006 when someone saw a Great Spotted, and now they're countrywide. Though the beastly beasts haven't let me see or hear them yet.

Emotional and material things associated with the emotional.

And the pictures look like heaven.

Indeed. Like egrets.

Egrets - we had a few, but then again, too few to mention....Grin

and now they are common around the coast.
