WTF?! 'Ladies and gentlemen, those in between and those undecided, welcome to Avanti West Coast.'

Stick to sorting your train out Avanti....

As some activists really don't like public announcements that use 'Ladies and Gentlemen' their whining has probably prompted this. However, this seems far too flippant to my ears, even a bit of a piss-take. Therefore, I quite like it.

With you 100% on the trains though. Was Avanti the company that covered a train in the trans flag?

That line was used in Trainspotting/ Shallow Grave by a crappy comedic bingo caller. Euan McGregor rolled his eyes, too. " Jesus, where did they dig him up"?

MarieDeGournay · 18/11/2024 11:46

I'm in the 'it was a piss-take' camp, and hope that the announcer got away with it without someone complaining that s/he wasn't taking NBism seriously enough.
I can imagine a few quiet smiles and side eyes from the passengers😂

It's even funnier in that case!

Oh didn't realise the trainspotting link - funny. I do hope it was tongue in cheek but I'll bet my £££ ticket it wasn't.

I was on a coach trip recently and when the bus driver was pointing out where to go for the male and female toilets at the services, a man piped up “I’m neither male or female!” Cue much laughter and then a discussion about/pisstake of pronouns as we disembarked. The bus driver said he hadn’t made his mind up on his yet. ‘‘Twas a bonding moment!

This is great. Making a mockery of the whole thing is how this nonsense will be destroyed.

DuesToTheDirt · 18/11/2024 20:36

Definitely meant tongue-in-cheek. Some of the Avanti announcers are quite humorous, I got one once who was commiserating with anyone planning to get off at Preston.

MelodyMalone · 18/11/2024 20:43

I'm definitely in the piss-take camp, too!

I doubt they'd have said ladies and gentlemen at all if it was intended seriously, and they definitely wouldn't have said undecided or in between!

I have a feeling a similar line may also have been used in Pride, possibly during the opening announcement of the Pits & Perverts night. It definitely has a history as comedy usage.
