Beyonce Routine Strictly Results Show

I guess this is more of a AIBU but with a sex and gender slant which is why I am asking here.

AIBU to be annoyed that a male dancer took centre stage for the Beyoncé routine on the Strictly Results show last night. I like Johanes and think he’s a great dancer but it grates on me that he was the main dancer for this routine. They are literally dancing to “Who Runs the World Girls” with a man as the focus! It’s annoying! Bog standard women are not interesting enough anymore. It has to be a gay man to be appealing?

I feel a bit bad now, I loved it 😁 As the family would attest, I am not normally slow in picking up an anti-feminist message, I feel I have let the side down 😱. Although in my defence I don't know the songs and didn't hear the lyrics. But still.

Same here. I thought it was great, and didn't know the song. Now that it's been pointed out I can see why everyone here is questioning the choice of a man. I wonder how they choose the lead dancer? I presume here it's that Johannes is a huge Beyonce fan and wanted to do it? Maybe if he'd been a straight male they wouldn't have chosen him.

Can’t we just all face up to the fact that no one can do female empowerment better than a fab-u-lous man in high heels??

Women just need to know when to sit back and let the men shine. I really, really want to know what all the ‘supporting’ female dancers thought. And I love Johannes but hogging the spotlight in this routine really jarred.

Binglebong · 06/11/2024 20:06

If they wanted a black woman (and i understand the optics of a white one) there is Karen. Or even have Motsi do it- she may be a judge now but was a dancer. But no, they wanted a man.

thewitchesyouwerenotabletoburn · 06/11/2024 22:23

Karen would’ve be fabulous. They could’ve started with Jojo and then had her “take over” for “who runs the world”.

RayonSunrise · 07/11/2024 07:31

@MrTwatchester The Matthew Bourne version of Swan Lake is over 30 years old now. It was genuinely innovative in its day, at the tale end of the AIDS era. Not sure why you're singling it out as an example of edgy Wokeness.

Another Johannes fan here, but no reason to include him at all, surely?

...just in case anyone missed it first time round....

I've complained. We all know what flannel we'll get back, though, don't we.

Flakey, patronising, ideologically captured flannel most likely!

StrongFemaleCharacter · 13/11/2024 16:34

Me too. As if we were going to get anything else.

IWantedThereThereButItsGone · 13/11/2024 16:44

It’s just so incredibly rude to pretend you’re responding to a complaint, when you don’t actually respond. They might as well have written You are a fool and beneath our notice.

Nerdles · 13/11/2024 17:25

I got this. It’s the usual ‘sorry not sorry’

Doubtless filed in the bin by Strictly.

Ditto...
Points of view? .. is that still running?

Chicooo · 13/11/2024 19:32

Mmm I cant get too worked out about it.

I certainly could have if it were a straight, white man.

But:

It's absolutely clear to anyone who's seen him on TV that Jojo is an absolute angel on Earth. I fail to think for any moment that he'd ever think of a woman as lesser than him.

Also - being a gay, black, dancer, I'm sure he has had his fair share of being treated terribly.

Perhaps I'm biased but I was over the moon that he'd gotten a chance to lead a Beyoncé routine. Must've meant a lot to him. I absolutely hear what you're all saying but of anyone in the world to worry about taking something from a woman that she deserves Jojo I really don't think is a person who'd do that.

So none of the women ‘deserved’ to lead the routine?

And what has his sexuality got to do with his sex? Or the oppression (you’ve inferred) he has suffered?

He doesn't have to think of a woman as lesser than him; just the people who decide to put him in as the leader of a particular routine.
Why could they not give him a routine to lead involving a medley of songs by men who are gay or otherwise part of a minority vulnerable to oppression?
