Beyonce Routine Strictly Results Show

I guess this is more of a AIBU but with a sex and gender slant which is why I am asking here.

AIBU to be annoyed that a male dancer took centre stage for the Beyoncé routine on the Strictly Results show last night. I like Johanes and think he’s a great dancer but it grates on me that he was the main dancer for this routine. They are literally dancing to “Who Runs the World Girls” with a man as the focus! It’s annoying! Bog standard women are not interesting enough anymore. It has to be a gay man to be appealing?

I noticed that and thought the same, @WitneyWooo , and I am a Johannes fan through and through

Walkingtheplank · 04/11/2024 13:09

I thought so too. It required a man to lead the dance to a medley of songs about female empowerment.
I love Johannes but the messaging of this made me feel sick.

Nerdles · 04/11/2024 13:11

I thought exactly the same.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 04/11/2024 13:17

Ww only watch strictly when ds1 and his husband are visiting

but if i had seen it i would have thought the same thing…you are not being unreasonable

Hoppinggreen · 04/11/2024 13:17

Its like all this shit, if a man does it it its somehow more impressive than a woman doing it

God don’t hopping

had a lecture from ds1’s husband about gay men being so much better at using fans 😳

MarieDeGournay · 04/11/2024 13:52

Well I guess that proves the real answer to the question 'Who runs the world?'😡

Yes this exactly!

It winds me up when soi-disant "edgy" theatre directors do their all-male interpretations of e.g. Swan Lake too. Like there aren't enough great parts for men as it is, we have to go back to the days when they played the women too, and everyone fawns over these productions.

Seasmoke · 04/11/2024 13:58

I agree. It looked especially odd when a man ( even on in high heels) was dancing to ' Who runs the World?' with a bunch of female dancers behind him as backing dancers while he was at the front. And I love Johannes too.

WitneyWooo · 04/11/2024 13:59

Glad it’s not just me! I want to complain but think anything would be misconstrued as homophobia ☹️

Yes it’s over done now, I am hoping it’s moving from edgy to lame.

Doesn't it just?

Bonbon21 · 04/11/2024 14:02

Well I guess if you were pretty insecure and had an axe to grind you could call it homophobia..
Or maybe inappropriate with regard to the message in the song..
Or misrepresentation...
Or...

Please do, it's a song about female empowerment.
I imagine whoever made this male biased decision (am guessing a man) is mightily pleased with their clever self.
I love Johannes too, but I love him less for this.
Not funny, not clever, we are so bored and over this tedious trope.

PaterPower · 04/11/2024 14:11

We thought the same.

I didn’t think the last part of the compilation was up to much either - the bit where it turned into an advert for a Magic Mike spinoff 🙄

Theeyeballsinthesky · 04/11/2024 14:12

No you’re not being unreasonable. I thought it was total bollocks to have a man leading it and I love Jojo

SensibleSigma · 04/11/2024 14:14

I felt exactly the same way- especially as JoJo in heels is so very tall and slender and dominant. The women were reduced by his stature.
He’s a bloke.

SensibleSigma · 04/11/2024 14:15

And actually I’m not keen on Jojo specifically because of lots of this type of stuff.

ThePoshUns · 04/11/2024 14:16

Yes so tedious, but this the bbc after all.

IWantedThereThereButItsGone · 04/11/2024 14:17

I also found it astonishing that no one directing or producing the show bothered to point out the irony.

It was beyond annoying. (And I too previously loved Johannes; I wonder what he was thinking …)

I want to see all-female productions. Of everything: theatre, ballet, music, the works.

Yep.

Love Jojo, he's my fave pro dancer. But this was off considering the song title.

Bonbon21 · 04/11/2024 14:26

Well I am putting my money where my mouth is... have just completed the complaints form on BBC..
Anyone else?
