Beyonce Routine Strictly Results Show

I guess this is more of a AIBU but with a sex and gender slant which is why I am asking here.

AIBU to be annoyed that a male dancer took centre stage for the Beyoncé routine on the Strictly Results show last night. I like Johanes and think he’s a great dancer but it grates on me that he was the main dancer for this routine. They are literally dancing to “Who Runs the World Girls” with a man as the focus! It’s annoying! Bog standard women are not interesting enough anymore. It has to be a gay man to be appealing?

MarkWithaC, you're right, classical ballet was traditionally centred on the women. I did enjoy the all male Swan Lake: swans are powerful and threatening and it was very well done.
But, yes, a Strictly performance celebrating Beyonce, and this song in particular should not have been centred on a man.

It was fabulous. JoJo is fabulous. I loved it - I was just amazed by the dancing - I don't look for anti women vibes in everything.

Its not anti woman vibes at all. But do you not think there's something eyebrow raising about a song that literally says "who runs the world? girls?" followed by close ups of a man? the juxtaposition is ridiculous. Any other song and it wouldn't have been noticed. But for those 20 seconds, there was absolutely no reason for JoJo to take centre stage. The fact that even he didn't query the inappropriateness of that does make me side eye him a bit.

And let's be clear, absolutely every single person on this thread (including myself) have all referenced how bloody brilliant JoJo is.

I have complained. I am so sick of this bullshit.

Please do, it's a song about female empowerment.
I imagine whoever made this male biased decision (am guessing a man) is mightily pleased with their clever self.
I love Johannes too, but I love him less for this.
Not funny, not clever, we are so bored and over this tedious trope.

The virtue signaling in women is really high at the moment.
My bet is on an all female decision making team inspiring the penis worship. They are way more modern than other gurrrrls.

But even the rest of it, not that song section- Jojo just dominated with his male height and strength, slenderness, making the women look like props somehow.

And actually, which female dancers are getting promoted these days? They don’t seem to be. It’s all about the men.

unless it’s just me that mainly watches Nikita

Sunnyjac · 05/11/2024 13:51

Exactly the same thought from me

I agree. I'm personally not a huge fan of Nadiya or Luba, but there's no denying both of them utterly deserve a full blown ringer next year. Part of the reason I'm not a big fan of them is they are forgettable because neither have ever been able to showcase what they can really do.

I did wonder whether Johannes got the lead in this dance because he's a Black man. Having a white woman dance the lead to a Black woman's music could also be seen as problematic (playing devils advocate). But I don't know - that's just me thinking outloud. In which case, perhaps they should have simply steered away from a Beyonce tribute entirely.

ThePoshUns · 05/11/2024 14:09

Yes none of the female dancers are showcased in the way that Johannes regularly is, and yes I think he's amazing too.

Snowypeaks · 05/11/2024 14:11

I haven't watched SCD for years, but if Katya is still on the show, I can totally see her channelling Beyoncé!
The song is about women asserting power.
A white woman is a woman, so JR being black is neither here nor there in this context.
Massive opportunity missed.

ThePoshUns · 05/11/2024 14:12

Motsi would have totally bossed it

SensibleSigma · 05/11/2024 14:14

I miss Motsi so much.

AlohaRose · 04/11/2024 14:40

And why do the BBC require full name, email address, postal address and phone number in order to make a complaint?

To confirm your identity and prevent one person sending multiple complaints under the pretense of being different people.

Snowypeaks · 05/11/2024 14:16

Isn't Motsi one of the current judges?

Snowypeaks · 05/11/2024 14:16

You mean Oti?

SensibleSigma · 05/11/2024 14:22

Snowypeaks · 05/11/2024 14:16

Doh, yes. Sorry. Attention span of a a gnat at the moment.

maddiemookins16mum · 05/11/2024 14:25

I'm a huge fan of his but it did cross my mind as to why it needed to be him.

ThePoshUns · 05/11/2024 14:31

Yes Oti is on maternity leave, she is one of my favourite dancers but Motsi is also a dancer and would have been great.

Movinghouseatlast · 05/11/2024 14:35

I assumed his high heels meant he was somehow identifying as a 'woman ' or was being non binary or something. And therefore counted as a woman/ girl in some way. It's all so confusing but whatever the reasoning, it's always women at the bottom of the pack. It makes me so depressed. We can't have anything any more, a man will always want to take it away.

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 05/11/2024 14:37

To be fair to him he’s about to tour the UK as the lead in Kinky Boots, so it might be related to that. Still not right though.

taxi4ballet · 06/11/2024 15:47

I don't much like watching ballroom/latin-trained dancers doing commercial, contemporary or musical theatre show dance routines anyway. Their ingrained posture and technique is all wrong and it seriously grates on me.

As for a man taking the lead role in a dance to a song about female empowerment - Ye Gods it was shit.

Mittens67 · 06/11/2024 16:35

I thought exactly the same thing. Glad it wasn’t just me.
I like johannes who was the dancer in question but it was so insulting to women.
Not content with controlling, raping and murdering us it is like men want to cannabalise us as well and here is the bbc cheering them on in the mistaken belief that this is equality and inclusion.

Indianajet · 06/11/2024 18:58
