Some good news for once:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cz7w322230go

From the article:

"A rape support centre in Glasgow has broken away from the supervision of the umbrella charity Rape Crisis Scotland in a row over gender.
Glasgow and Clyde Rape Crisis said its priority was to provide a single-sex service by an "all-female workforce" - and this was "at odds" with the charity's priorities."

The centre in Glasgow said it only wanted to employ women, but this was "at odds" with Rape Crisis Scotland.

Well done that centre. But what a state of affairs that that have had too.

It should never have come to this.

As the old adage goes, look to who benefits from decisions such as those made by RCS. And who did? Certainly not female people.

Meadowfinch · 24/10/2024 11:09

Well done to Glasgow and Clyde Rape Crisis.

If Rape Crisis Scotland cannot see how totally at odds their policies are, with the safety & well being of their service users, then they are failing in what they were originally set up to do.

The Charities Commission should take a close look at whether the current board members are fit to be in post.

RapidOnsetGenderCritic · 24/10/2024 11:10

That's good news. But I wonder if leaving RCS has any downsides - what do RCS offer their members?

NotAtMyAge · 24/10/2024 11:15

A good and courageous decision. I wonder whether any other Scottish rape support centres will follow Glasgow's example?

I do hope so, and it might make the charities commission look more closely at it

My concern would be funding, but I’m sure they’ve not only considered that but secured it.

That would be good but given how feeble they have just been with Mermaids, I'm not holding out much hope.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 24/10/2024 11:33

Hopefully this will give RCS a bit of a shock. Would love to have been a fly on the wall at their meetings.

Unfortunately this does seem to signal that RCS have no intention of changing after the review of ERCC.

Also worried that there may be funding implications.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 24/10/2024 11:46

RCS have made a statement:

https://x.com/lbcnewsscot/status/1849385797356503281?s=46&t=AjtjSItRj-kgZwRzL-pdyQ

This part is bonkers.

"All Rape Crisis Centres must provide women only spaces within their service but how they define this is currently for individual centres to decide.
"Rape Crisis Centres can provide single sex spaces within Rape Crisis Scotland - and many do.

The review that found that woman only spaces were not provided by ERCC surely meant single sex rather than RCS's clear interpretation that woman only include males?!

Chrysanthemum5 · 24/10/2024 11:48

Well excellent, and now I know to give donations to this centre rather than any other

Snowypeaks · 24/10/2024 11:50

Good for them. The more publicity, the more donations. I hope other centres follow suit.

Whatever can they mean? Surely there is only one way to define “women only spaces”. If in doubt they could ask JKR how the centre she funds does it.

Mebebecat · 24/10/2024 11:55

If you go to the Glasgow and Clyde rape crisis centre website, its very easy to donate.

Mittens67 · 24/10/2024 11:56

I see the BBC couldn’t help themselves but to allow Brindley a unsubstantiated swipe at women who have spoken up against her allowing men into rape crisis centres as an end to their article.
Still excellent news though.

HerGorgeousMajestyArabellaScott · 24/10/2024 12:04

Fantastic, brave work from GCRC.

There is more info on them on their site. They deserve support.

larklane17 · 24/10/2024 12:06

Well done Glasgow for standing up for vulnerable women.

We were created to provide support by and for women. We believe, and women have consistently told us, that single-sex services delivered by an all-female workforce are crucial to help them heal from sexual trauma. This approach remains our priority but is at odds with RCS

That BBC article tip toes around the MW, RCS, and co saga. It's not mentioned that he had no appropriate qualifications at the time of appointment, being of the male sex, the obsession with women rape victims having an orgasm etc. The false claim that FWS campaign against trans rights - when they in fact campaign FOR Women's Rights and against the erosion of them.

No surprise there.

Snowypeaks · 24/10/2024 12:09

“We were created to provide support by and for women. We believe, and women have consistently told us, that single-sex services delivered by an all-female workforce are crucial to help them heal from sexual trauma. This approach remains our priority but is at odds with RCS’."

This is it in a nutshell. The whole rationale of RCCs.

Other demographics can set up and fund their own services, but equally there is no reason why the centres still under the RCS aegis cannot offer services to other demographics - but in proportion to their numbers. The majority of the centres should be women-only and all-woman workforce. One or two could additionally accept survivors who were non-women (ha!) - but in a different part of the building with a different entrance, or on a specific day of the week, etc and some male counsellors if the service users wanted that. Within the women-only service, NBs or WCMs would be welcomed, but the option of the other once-weekly/different part of the building/male counsellor service would be there for them as well. There are so many ways that anyone who has suffered SA can be helped, none of which involve pushing women out of their own service or forcing mixed-sex provision on anyone.

CaptainSeven · 24/10/2024 12:15

Don't know if mentioned yet but Charities Commission is irrelevant.

And OSCR is weaker than the CC.

Have done so, and it was easy. I hope that they get lots of randoms like me donating from far away.

bluebellsandspring · 24/10/2024 12:31

This was featured on the BBC radio Scotland lunchtime news and I think they said at the end of the article that G&CRC will receive funding directly from Scot Gov. If this is correct, it indicates an important change of policy within Scot Gov. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Hoosemover · 24/10/2024 12:59

Let’s hope many other follow Glasgow’s actions

Igmum · 24/10/2024 13:15

Well done Glasgow and Clyde, I will donate.

Hope they manage to cope with not having access to Brindley's wisdom and support.

HarmonicAnalysis · 24/10/2024 13:33

Excellent - thank you, Glasgow and Clyde Rape Crisis, for unequivocally putting the needs of your women service users first, unlike RCS. You put them to shame.

HandShoe · 24/10/2024 13:34

Great work Glasgow and Clyde Rape Crisis! Have donated.

INeedAPensieve · 24/10/2024 14:01

Well done to them and I have also donated to them. This should never have happened in the first place, but there we are. I still think Sandy brindley needs to resign. However it's clear that the whole of RCS needs to change. I don't think it will focus on the needs of women and girls with so many people like Sandy still embedded in the centres and organisation.
