So the chief statistician in Scotland has issued the new list of gender identity that public bodies must ask us and collate data on

If you actually read the article, there is no requirement for people to be asked to choose out of all 24 options, these are options someone who has indicated a trans identity might write in a free text box, which staticians would then need to record.

But hey why let the truth get in the way of a good frothy headline from the right wing press.

PLEASE don't minimise the damage done by privileging certain gender identities over others by elevating them and highlighting them as "exemplary"!! Even if one COULD write one's unacknowledged minority gender identity in a text box, can you imagine how lonely and isolating it would feel to be othered in such a way? You would hardly even know that you existed at all.

It might be a challenge to cover every possible situation both in the guidance and on the form and to include emerging gender identities proactively before they are discovered through the process, but if Scotland of all places doesn't stand up for the tiniest and most overlooked minorities, who will?

I'm confused, how does this affect anyone here? Are people genuinely angry that someone might choose to write in a response to a field that isn't male/female? This seems like a non-issue

saltysandysea · 21/10/2024 21:16

24 genders and somehow did not include male or female! They have managed to include sex (which is assigned at birth).

As I don't identify as 'cis' maybe I am 'Gender non-conforming' as I am a female who forgoes makeup, nail varnish and short skirts!

It is a non-issue which is given a lot of prominence in Scottish government. It's taking time away from actual issues, which surely is concerning? And it makes the government look like lunatics.

I work with data and statistics every day. It's hard enough to get accurate data without this kind of nonsense corrupting it all. It's an utter waste of time and money. It has to stop.

“I don't think any political party (even Scottish Greens) would try to suggest that small businesses should provide 24 types of toilets on site” -

it would be 2, men and non-men, although of course the latter would also include men to be inclusive to all.

I was in a bar recently that had two types of toilets - gender neutral with stalls, and gender neutral with urinals. So exactly as you say - men, and non men (but also including men).

Seriously?

Educate yourself, as some people are fond of saying.

It's so fucking rude to plop into a conversation and announce that you're ignorant of why anyone should care about the subject at hand.

Go and do some reading.

It has been already said by multiple people, including me, did you bother reading the thread?

The information can confound the rest of the data. It can cause the reviewer of the data to doubt the integrity of the sex indicated for one.

The terms are confusing and conflicting too. I, personally, am ‘gender non-conforming’ in my dress and my interests- when did that become a ‘gender’.

It is a list full of potentially conflicting and confounding data points.

For what? what value does it add for any question except for any purpose directly related to being transgender? And why wouldn’t an organisation then have a specifically designed data collection tool for that purpose that gave them high quality data to interrogate? That would be the appropriate thing to do.

Justme56 · 22/10/2024 10:31

The question is with so many genders which one are you ‘non-conforming’ to?

Don’t ask obvious, intelligent questions - you’ll provoke a rage in anyone who believes in gender woo and get told that “it’s very complex”.
