So the chief statistician in Scotland has issued the new list of gender identity that public bodies must ask us and collate data on

Bigender... I read that as 'BigEnder', but I do have a generously-sized rear end so maybe that's why.

It should be Bigendian and Littleendian, of course.

If you'd drafted the above categories I'd have said they came out of Uranus.

Can someone post the archive link to the Telegraph article please.

My pleasure!

Aside from the ridiculous aspect of this nonsense.
How much money goes towards something that doesn't amount to anything.

If you actually read the article, there is no requirement for people to be asked to choose out of all 24 options, these are options someone who has indicated a trans identity might write in a free text box, which staticians would then need to record.

I think you've mis-read it, there are 24 initial options, with a further 23 for the free text option.

"There are then a further 23 “trans subcategory” options people can be recorded against. The “coding framework” was produced by the government “to help statistics producers categorise the free text responses related to trans status”."

Well I cant fucking read it because paywall.

What is interesting (and positive) is that they have included 'detransitioned' as an option. Will be interesting to get some large scale data on the number of people who detransition.

TemuSpecialBuy · 21/10/2024 06:35

FionnulaTheCooler · 20/10/2024 22:06

How is "trans man" and "trans woman" different from "trans masculine" and "trans feminine"?

And how are you supposed to know if
" detransitioned" is a man or a woman?

Like they just couldnt spare an extra slot so you have the option of detransitioned males and detransitioned females...

Or Is it like the JW where once you defect you no longer are acknowledged so they just to clump detransitioned people in a pile irrespective of biology / science/ fact?

Bizarre

'Frothy/frothing' and similar are clearly the words of the moment with TRA's. I've seen them come up so many times on recent threads. It's like a tediously predictable copy and paste.

(I do wonder whether there's a 'TRA big book of useful phrases' somewhere. Run a quick finger down the relevant page for pronouns or made up genders or whatever) and find the corresponding phrase. A handy quick guide!)

MissingLynks · 20/10/2024 23:15

This is exactly what it feels like to be offered 2 binary choices, neither of which fits.

Male/female fits all mammals on this planet. No special labels needed.

dp did a survey today (don't know what it was about) and for the "what gender are you" question the possible answers included "demiwoman" and "demiman". He was rather exasperated by it.

Whaddabout Demi Moore?

HerGorgeousMajestyArabellaScott · 21/10/2024 07:07

Screamingabdabz · 21/10/2024 00:26

But why would any of it be relevant? Surely a ‘trans identity’ is enough?

Yes. While some people may find their inner affiliation or rejection of stereotypes associated with their sex important and fascinating, it's not going to have any bearing on the data we need to function as a society.

'Froth' often goes with 'spew' and 'screech' and 'shrill'.

Thanks for the link.

'The list of 24 genders was added last week to formal guidance first issued to public bodies in 2021 about how information on sex and gender should be recorded and published.
The guidance says that those in surveys who say that they are transgender or have a “trans history” should then be asked to describe their status in their own words.
Public bodies are then advised to categorise their response as one of the possible gender identity options.'

So not just 'how people may identify', it's how the gov are supposed to categorise people with a trans identity.

Pointless waste of time and money.

I believe these are flavours of non-binary. Flavours which require cross-sex hormone medical intervention.

Skyellaskerry · 21/10/2024 07:44

If the question really needs to be asked, why not
sex - male / female
Do you have a gender identity Y/n
If yes (blank box or whatever collection from the hundreds of tick boxes are preferred).
If no, next question and those of us who don’t subscribe can at least be included.
I will not answer anything that assumes I identify as a gender, or I tick the prefer not to say, if there is one, or use a comment box.

"Are you Catholic or Protestant?"
"Neither. I'm atheist."
"But are you Catholic atheist or Protestant atheist?"

In categorising belief, binary choices are indeed pointless and bigoted. This so-called 'data collection' is useless and offensive. It collects no useful data. It lumps together beliefs, practices, situations, and treats them all as one data point.

But I suspect that you have completely missed my point, and your objection to a binary choice is more along the lines of:

"Are you female or male?"
"Neither. I'm BigEndian."

But hey why let the truth get in the way of a good frothy headline from the right wing press.

And yet, why does any of this information need to be collected? Humans are either male or female. There are no other sexes and why does gender identity actually matter?

Spaces should be single sex. Employment roles need to be balanced by sex and may have sexed based exceptions under the EA. Collecting gender identity is only useful if you collect everybody’s and there are at least 130, so this exercise by this department is meaningless.

Maybe you can froth about others pointing out how this is reducing options to this list some more. But the reality is your own frothing seems to have been based on your own philosophical belief that a gender identity is important for society to record officially.

Maybe you could explain why it is important to general society while you are here frothing about an article? You might be the first if you could make a coherent argument.

HaveYouActuallyDoneAnyWashingThisWeekMum · 21/10/2024 08:05

Embarrassing. I can’t bear to look at the list 🙈 Waiting for Chris Tarrant to pop up at any moment to tell people in Scotland that this is all just an elaborate nightmarish prank.
