This is exactly what it feels like to be offered 2 binary choices, neither of which fits.*
In categorising belief, binary choices are indeed pointless and bigoted. This so-called 'data collection' is useless and offensive. It collects no useful data. It lumps together beliefs, practices, situations, and treats them all as one data point.
But I suspect that you have completely missed my point, and your objection to a binary choice is more along the lines of:
"Are you female or male?"
"Neither. I'm BigEndian."
