ECB bans transgender women from top two tiers of women’s domestic cricket

Why just the top two tiers? 'It's impossible to balance all the considerations', apparently.
It's not impossible though, is it? Women (and trans men if they wish, if they're not on testosterone) play in female cricket; men (and trans women, and anyone else with a handy dose of male puberty) play in male cricket, and everyone can concentrate on rooting out homophobia and transphobia from sport.

ECB bans transgender women from top two tiers of women’s domestic cricket

Transgender women will be unable to feature in the top two tiers of the new women’s domestic structure or the women’s Hundred, the ECB has announced

These sports organisations that only allow women’s sports at elite level - where do they think the elite players come from?

FrothyCothy · 17/10/2024 19:51

DH used to manage a local Sunday team and often played both girls and women in his team, so I can see there being some value in flexibility at that level. Not sure how ECB has made this decision though.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/10/2024 19:58

It's illogical but at least it's a start in the right direction.

BellaAmorosa · 17/10/2024 20:10

The rationale for sex categories in community sport is exactly the same as for elite sport. Everyone can play cricket in their sex category.

ErroltheDragon
I think it's slightly worse than just allowing men at all levels, actually. It's an attempt to hide the problem. Girls/women who just want to have some fun don't have the clout of elite players. They have no money to bring discrimination lawsuits. This is a super-cynical move by the ECB.

SirChenjins · 17/10/2024 20:11

Hopefully this will start to extend downwards - it’s far from ideal obviously, but it’s a start I suppose.

MelodyMalone · 17/10/2024 20:13

The comments by Dr Patel, quoted in the article, seem peculiar. As far as I can understand it, she is saying society is evolving, eventually everyone will be transgender (OK she's not quite saying that) and biological sex will be irrelevant, so therefore we should probably just forget about "notions" (her word) of fairness and safety.

BellaAmorosa · 17/10/2024 20:15

One wonders what she is a doctor of.

MelodyMalone · 17/10/2024 20:15

As I see it, if we want to have mixed sex teams in certain sports that's fine, call them mixed sex teams and make the necessary accommodations for that. If we have single sex teams they should remain single sex.

SirChenjins · 17/10/2024 20:21

If it’s this Seema Patel her “current research interests are focused around family responses when Asian women are sent to prison”. Interesting - I imagine her research findings will show very clearly that the family responses are very different when Asian men are sent to prison.

Redshoeblueshoe · 17/10/2024 20:24

Girls won't get to elite level if they are constantly being beaten by men.

SirChenjins · 17/10/2024 20:24

Sports law apparently. She should have studied biology instead.

So dr Patel said “During the consultation processes adopted by governing bodies, there needs to be true engagement of a diverse range of views beyond the science community to determine rules”

why do we need to listen to anything beyond science?? Is it because the science keeps inconveniently pointing out the truth that men are stronger & faster than women

are there any other things we should go beyond the science in? Astro physics perhaps? Civil engineering? Who needs the inconvenience of building stress levels when constructing a bridge eh?

Runor · 17/10/2024 21:33

Just keep repeating ‘why were sex categories introduced?’

Was it because women and girls loved pink and having pillow fights in the changing rooms? Or could it be that those with male bodies have a huge advantage over those with female bodies, so sex-based categories are needed in the interests of fairness and safety?

I can see this working if everybody knew in advance the teams would be mixed, but if a girl/woman goes along to play in what she understands is a women's match, that should be 100% biological women only, at every level of the sport.

EdithStourton · 17/10/2024 21:40

So top women cricketers need to not have men playing in their teams but other women cricketers don't matter.

Cool.

More fuckery,

RedToothBrush · 17/10/2024 21:41

Death by 1000 cuts.

How do you kill women's sport?

That’s exactly it @MarieDeGournay

DH is involved with a different sport that is still being rubbish about TW on women’s teams. Women’s teams turn up and find they are planning against a team that is badged as a woman’s team but is in fact mixed sex because men are allowed to play in their preferred ‘gender’. When women complain, teams are told that can forfeit the match 🤦🏻‍♀️ it’s so unfair

“why do we need to listen to anything beyond science?? Is it because the science keeps inconveniently pointing out the truth that men are stronger & faster than women”

indeed. It is almost like science is just so inconvenient to some special male people’s feelings. And so, the emotional needs of those male people, not the female people, have to be prioritised. Can’t do that if science gets in the way!!

They only ban TW in Female sport at elite level so that the injustice is not visible on television etc. think of the bad PR! Hide it away at non elite level and it’s all tickety boo!

Gender Studies at Brighton?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 18/10/2024 01:26

They have banned transwomen from playing on women's teams at elite level.

They have banned transmen, and* women who identify as non-binary, from playing on women's teams at any *level. Even if not on hormones.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 18/10/2024 01:27

So I don't know what they've been listening to, but it certainly isn't the science.

(This is the post I meant to quote.)

That jumped out at me, too.
Plus MCW can play either in the men's or women's teams at grassroots level.

It's wrong, but logical if you realise that genderist thinking treats GI the way we would treat sex as regards safety and fairness.

According to this reasoning, claiming to be the other sex has transformed their physical attributes. The reasoning goes:
males who claim to be women (MCW) are women, so it follows that they can "play up" if they choose, but should otherwise be in the female category for their safety and for fairness for them.

And WCM are men, so it follows that they must stick to male competition because men's superior strength makes their participation in women's competitions unfair and unsafe for women...including for MCW.

The ECB are taking safety and fairness considerations which apply to sex categories and applying them to GI. Pandering to males and shafting all women.
Mad.
