Women aren't allowed to have anything for themselves

Tooting33 · 17/10/2024 07:46

Can you post a link to the shortlist?

Endthisshit · 17/10/2024 08:10

I posted the link yesterday, MN removed it. Sorry. Seems you can’t post anything too controversial anymore

If you google BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year 2024 it shows the link.

There's also a page where you can vote for your choice of the nominees - google Vote now for your BBC Women's Footballer of the Year to find it. Voting closes on 28th October at 9am GMT.

It's sickening that they would include a male in the list.

NotBadConsidering · 17/10/2024 09:11

It’s Footballer of the Year, not Sports woman of the year, there is a male on the short list, and presumably someone reported the previous thread, because that’s the only way things get removed.

NitroNine · 17/10/2024 09:12

Have you emailed MNHQ to ask why it was taken down?

RainWithSunnySpells · 17/10/2024 09:16

The deletion message says:

'This thread has been deleted

We've deleted this thread as the title breaks our Talk Guidelines and we don't think the thread is likely to go well. We're happy to host a discussion on this story but it must remain within Talk guidelines.'

It’s WOMEN’s Footballer of the Year. I’d like to know how BB qualified as a woman when they were barred from that African competition for not being a woman.

“'All players had to undergo gender verification, a Caf [Confederation of African Football] requirement, and unfortunately she did not meet the criteria set by Caf,' Andrew Kamanga, Zambia Football Association (FAZ) president had told BBC Sport Africa.“

Yes, you are correct, I meant to say that, I was just differentiating between it being specifically about football rather than general sport.

That's useful, thanks maltravers, I know a lot about Imane Khélif - there was a very detailed and well-informed discussion about DSDs on here during the Olympics - but I was not sure about BB, who obviously looks like someone who has been through male puberty, but I try to keep an open mind until I get some evidence. Failing the CAF test is pretty conclusive.

For anyone thinking, as somebody said on the deleted thread, that women like BB are being unfairly medicalised, it's worth repeating that there are Differences of Sexual Development that only males get, and DSDs that only females get - which is why the term 'intersex' is inaccurate.

A person with a DSD who has been through male puberty has never been female, and doesn't belong in women's sports.

There was three players that Zambia did not play 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) because Zambia understood that they would not pass a sex test. Racheal Kundananji was another athlete that was not played, who may have a different DSD to Banda.

Barbra Banda | Mumsnet

Does anyone have any information about the actual sex of this person? [[https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-12282149/amp/Zambia-strike...

Bit of a derail here - I googled 'CAF gender test' because I like to go back to primary sources before I make my mind up about things.

I came across this take on the situation from what you would think is a fearless defender of women's rights: Human Rights Watch. Women's rights ARE human rights, aren't they?

Football authorities blindsided Barbra Banda, a top player on the Zambian women’s team, when they announced she was ineligible for competition in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations last week after a “gender verification procedure” that determined her testosterone levels were “too high” to compete as a woman.

OK so far - a chromosome test would have been more conclusive, but it has been shown that elevated testosterone in women is still miles below what is normal for a man, so a 'woman with very high testosterone levels' is probably a 'man with normal testosterone levels.'

But Human Right's Watch's response to this effort to enforce fairness and safety in women's sport?

Such sex testing procedures are flagrant human rights violations because they are stigmatizing, stereotyping, and discriminatory. FIFA, the highest global authority in football, has a policy that encourages such tests, contrary to the organization’s human rights responsibilities.
Zambian Woman Footballer Sex Tested Because FIFA Allows It | Human Rights Watch (hrw.org)

So to any sportswomen who don't want to compete against men, the message from Human Rights Watch is: how dare you! you are encouraging flagrant human rights violations!

it's worth repeating that there are Differences of Sexual Development that only males get, and DSDs that only females get - which is why the term 'intersex' is inaccurate.

And there has never been a baby born in human history, notwithstanding rare chromosomal variations, that could not categorised as either male or female. I think that needs shouting from the rafters lot more, as so many parties seek to muddy the waters.

duc748 · 17/10/2024 15:14

That's disgraceful from HRW, Marie.

We can only hope that this will be picked up by the press.

Man wins BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year.

It should be a satirical headline from The Onion but it’s not.

I’m not so sure. I think the sunlight is still being obscured by the likes of the BBC, who don’t even give a hint at the reality of the situation. Hopefully other media outlets will do better.
