Nottingham RTN advertised as women only: but then lists trans women, non-binary, gender non-conforming, those suffering misogynistic oppression

I only looked at the listing as most Reclaim the Night Marches are held in Nov / Dec during the 16 Days of Action Against Violence Against Womenso was curious.

So when I first saw Women Only, I was happily surprised.

But then I read on.

Well it is Nottingham.

Nottingham's Reclaim the Night protest is organised by fantastic local grass roots organisations – Nottingham Women's Centre, Juno Womens Aid, Equation, and Notts Sexual Violence Support Service.

I agree, those are some fantastic organisations and we're lucky to have them in Nottingham- if you're familiar with their work I'm surprised you weren't aware they are trans inclusive organisations as they are perfectly open about it.

Hatfullofwillow · 15/10/2024 14:48

So what action are you suggesting people take? Call for their already pitiful funding to be removed, picket outside the Women's Centre or stir up some wider backlash against my city's services?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 15/10/2024 14:49

It's dangerous for women to be openly women centred. If they don't centre men claiming to be women they're likely to be publicly threatened - both the organisation and individual women (see any one of the recent tribunals).

It's why so much activity takes place "in secret" these days where women can guarantee a single sex environment to socialise or be politically active.

BlackForestCake · 15/10/2024 14:50

How are they fantastic if they support male fetishists and sex-denialist mumbo-jumbo?

It may shock you to hear this from outside your echo chamber but the vast majority of the women they support couldn't care less if they also support trans people. It doesn't invalidate their work in the slightest. You may not agree with it but it seems narrow minded at best to assume a trans inclusive organisation can't possibly do any good work.

How do you know that then?

Greyskybluesky · 15/10/2024 15:12

Well it is Nottingham.

I don't understand what this means? Can you clarify @IwantToRetire ?

thebrollachan · 15/10/2024 15:14

They're just overthinking it, aren't they?

Why not say 'women and accompanied children only', and leave it at that?

If TWAW, they're covered, and will turn up.

If there are NB or GNC people out there suffering from misogyny, that'll be because, for some ineffable reason, misogynists keep mistaking them for women, so they'll blend right in at the march.

That footnote makes it clear that the organisers don't believe TWAW and don't think that being NB or GNC stops you being a woman. Have the courage of your stupid convictions, you bigots!

IwantToRetire · 15/10/2024 18:06

Oh dear - what really strange responses!

For a forum where many nit pick about language I was pointing out what on one level is hysterically funny that an even is proudly announced as "Women Only" and then goes on to contradict itself by the endless list of everything else.

There are in fact many RTN marches most of which are no longer women only - but they dont lie about it.

What mind set is it that thinks they can so blatantly lie.

There is nothing wrong with being truthful and saying trans inclusive.

And whilst this is only a march, it is exactly this deliberate duplicity with language that has lead to the situation in for example ERCC.

Makes you think it is being organised by silly school girls or students.

Well it is Nottingham.

This is because Nottingham Women's Centre became will known for pushing the TWAW and being inclusive. And at the time it first started doing this many were shocked.

But I suppose now it is just standard.

Again those who for some reason have chosen not to understand, I dont think lying when you are supposedly supporting the cause to stop violence against women makes you very credible. Or respectful of women.

And as this is FWR known for supporting gender crtical feminism, how would anyone be surprised that I should question this misuse of language that has been so much part of attacking women's sex based rights.
