JK Rowling has revealed she was one of almost 3,000 census respondents who identified their religion as “believer in biology” in protest against the SNP’s self-ID policy.

National Records of Scotland said 2,883 people recorded “believer in biology” or similar in answer to question 21 of the 2022 census amid controversy over Scottish government plans to introduce controversial gender reforms.
Feminist campaigners had criticised official guidance for the poll that allowed people to self-identify their sex, instead insisting that biological sex should be recorded in order to protect women’s rights and guarantee the efficacy of data collection.
They warned that it meant the data collected would be a mix of sex and gender identity resulting in the loss of vital statistics about biological sex used for planning services.

In the rest of the UK, the census went ahead in 2021, and asked a binary-choice sex question with the only answers permitted being “male” or “female”, after a successful legal challenge by the campaign group Fair Play For Women. A similar challenge by the group in Scotland failed.
