“Oopsie?” Ineligible prisoners released early; one accused of sexual offence within hours.

The - inevitable - mishandling of the early release of prisoners to alleviate prison overcrowding has led to one of said men reoffending (in the form of a sexual offence) within hours of his release; & several others (unsurprisingly) doing a vanishing act.

In fairness to Labour, they inherited an absolute nightmare of a prison situation (it doesn’t work well enough to be called a system, frankly) but they did not manage this properly at all. (The absolute fecking state of the UK’s prisons in the C21 is so thoroughly the fault of the Tories that it is legitimate to bring Thatcher into it; but Labour need to get it together & make the changes they know are necessary so that dangerous men stay locked up - in facilities that are safe, hygienic & rehabilitation-focused.)

This was reported at the time and was discusses on the original thread about the early release scheme.

So on one level pleased to hear this isn't a 2nd incident - as yet.

But more recent news is that 24 were release in error.

And 7 who were released somehow never got tagged.

But prison over crowding, like lack of social housing, started way before the last lot of Tories and the previous Labour government could have done something.

Just like they could have done something about scam builders and lack of maintenance after the clear warning of the fire at Lakanal House fire. Had it been acted on Grenfell just might not have happened.

Not forgetting that one of the drains on the public purse is repaying the loans that Blair's PPP helped but the UK Government further into debt.
