‘JK Rowling wants me fired. I just want to help rape survivors’

Sandy Brindley, chief executive of Rape Crisis Scotland, says the online vitriol and public attacks she has faced mean she’s likely to stand down within a year. She spoke to The Times on Sunday

"Last Friday, Sandy Brindley, the chief executive of Rape Crisis Scotland, was collecting her daughter from primary school when a journalist rang to ask if she would comment on JK Rowling’s demand for her resignation. By the time the reporter hung up, Brindley was in tears.
“I’m never upset in front of my daughter. She said, ‘What’s wrong?’” Brindley recalls. “I said, ‘Someone’s calling for my resignation’. She asked: ‘Who?’ I told her: ‘JK Rowling.’”
Brindley’s little girl looked up at her and said: “That’s one of my favourite authors, Mummy.”
By now Brindley’s eyes are twinkling as she recounts the incident. “What I didn’t then say was: ‘Well, it’s me or her!” she says, dissolving into laughter.
It’s a moment of levity at a serious, defining moment in her life. After years on the wrong end of online campaigns hashtagged #BrindleyMustGo and as the subject of criticism from very prominent online warriors, Brindley, 50, has had enough. She says that she does not expect to be in her post by this time next
year."

Rape Crisis Scotland boss apologises for Edinburgh centre failings

It's. not what she says it's everyone has to listen. To her because she is J K Rowling. Soo it must be important. Gets on my nerves. If she wants a voice she should go into politics. But on second thoughts perhaps not. She would be even more pompous and irritating. I know she is the darling of MN.

Rowling's opinion is no more important or interesting than anyone else's. It's just that many people listen because what she is saying is truthful, necessary and usually very witty. And because she's so gloriously rich (from her own talent) she can't be told to shut up....

Are there any grown-ups running any organisations these days? With boring old-fashioned professionalism, responsibility and self-awareness?

There was a devastating Wings over Scotland post about Brindley and her partner Sharon Cowan a few days ago. Properly chilling.

Thanks for the article.

If Sandy Brindley has a single dusty atom of decency still lurking anywhere in the deep dark shadows of her soul, she needs to walk away before any more women suffer from her catastrophic lack of integrity, empathy, honesty.

Hear hear.

Wings, on Sharon Cowan:

She is, in short, the kind of batshit-mental colon-gazing narcissist sociopath who thrives in academia because they couldn’t hold down a normal job for 30 seconds and sticking them in a university by and large isolates the problem...

Chersfrozenface · 27/09/2024 16:07

"..sticking them in a university by and large isolates the problem."

Unfortunately it doesn't, it just leads to universities churning out young people wedded to a batshit ideology who go on to influence organisations in the outside world.

I do love the way people complain about women who have power, or money and use it to have a voice.

Because of course, they would far rather we listen to women with no power, no money, and no voice.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/09/2024 17:14

Editor: Sandy did not, in fact, "just want to help rape survivors."

TWETMIRF · 27/09/2024 17:52

You're all being very unfair, she does want to help them. She wants to help them to understand that it was probably their fault and that the poor rapist's feelings come first.

JimberlyJo · 27/09/2024 21:06

I didn’t realise Prof Sharon was Brindley’s partner. The penny has just dropped as to why she was in a meeting with the worried rape survivors. She was obviously Invited specially to cause harm. This is just sick.

Also, who decided it would be a jolly jape to employ a bloke in a frock to run the service? Out of all the capable women who possibly applied for the job, they chose a man! He must have been head hunted. That’s how these jobs get divvied up.

Ideologues indeed! It’s actually sickening. Wtf was everyone thinking??

Sussurations · 29/09/2024 09:08

Christ, imagine being such a tone-deaf, selfish, self-pitying narcissistic loser that you talk to a journalist about how you made your daughter cry and you think you’re the victim in this horrible sadistic shitshow.

Survivors who were berated by Brindleys partner for asking for a women only service.

Glad this story is not dying.

It is appalling that a spokesperson for RCS said:

A Rape Crisis spokeswoman said: “The independent review of ERCC found that between October 2022 and February 2024, there were no protected women-only spaces available through ERCC unless they were specifically requested.

“Prior to October 2022, ERCC operated women only provision which was inclusive of all women as defined by ERCC, who operate independently of RCS.

“This account of the meeting referred to was provided to RCS on December 1, 2019.

“We responded to the note of the meeting on December 6, 2019, to say we didn’t recognise the account provided. This remains the case.”

  1. Sandy Brindley went off the deep end about others accusing her rape survivors of lying

  2. Remember how many people were at this meeting. Sandy Brindley is again abusing her position hiding behind a spokesperson to make it look more official and to inflate numbers; this way it makes it look like it's not just Brindley and Cowen v the Rape Survivors

  3. What WAS the meeting about if it WASN'T about an issue with single sex provision? What did Sandy Brindley think she was talking to the women about?

It's totally implausible that these women had this meeting for another reason. So why does Brindley think she can do this?

It's reprehensible on so many levels.

Datun · 29/09/2024 09:16

The woman said: “I came out re-traumatised and my worst fears confirmed. It was one of the worst experiences of my life.”

“We responded to the note of the meeting on December 6, 2019, to say we didn’t recognise the account provided. This remains the case.”

As Red says, what IS their account then?? Let's have it.

But Sandy won't recognise this.

Sandy who should believe and understand the trauma of raped women...

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 29/09/2024 09:55

Glad this is being kept in public view.

RCS haven't replied to my letter expressing concern over potential GDPR and safeguarding breaches so I will now write to OSCR.

We need that vile woman out of there before she does any more harm.

DeanElderberry · 29/09/2024 10:11

Fascinating seeing the partner quite explicitly praising someone who was in PIE. It never died.

SquirrelSoShiny · 29/09/2024 10:50

God the utter self-absorption is almost beyond me. She really doesn't realise she's the baddie, or she does but just wants to grift a bit longer.

She's not saying anyone has to listen. People are listening because she has a huge public profile but you are still free to ignore her.

This. She speaks up so that people who are frightened they may lose their income if they do don’t have to. I think she’s great.

user47 · 29/09/2024 11:32

@ThatsNotMyTeen this is so true, she speaks so I can cower and keep my job, BRAVO

RedToothBrush · 29/09/2024 12:48

There are but four unanswered questions

  1. What did they think the meeting was about and how did it go?

  2. Do they think they treated the women at the meeting with respect and compassion? How?

  3. Why was Brindley's partner there at all? What was her vested interest in the meeting?

  4. Is Cowen's influence over Brindley unhealthy and concerning in terms of Brindley's role and primary responsibility to rape survivors?

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 29/09/2024 13:59

So, of the people present at the meeting, that's four rape survivors and Joan McAlpine (SNP MSP) with one version of events; and the then-CEO of ERCC, plus Sandy Brindley (from RCS) and (queer-theory academic and Brindley's partner) Sharon Cowan who challenge that version. We don't know what the three of them think happened instead.

Hm.

I'd wager there's a lot of 'hate', 'bigotry', 'transphobia' or similar words etc. in their own contemporaneous notes from the meeting. Which is unfortunate for them, given the outcome of the review & the claims of ignorance of this very same attitude evident in MW's words/deeds. So it's highly unlikely they will ever release the notes/give their version of the meeting.
