‘JK Rowling wants me fired. I just want to help rape survivors’

Sandy Brindley, chief executive of Rape Crisis Scotland, says the online vitriol and public attacks she has faced mean she’s likely to stand down within a year. She spoke to The Times on Sunday

"Last Friday, Sandy Brindley, the chief executive of Rape Crisis Scotland, was collecting her daughter from primary school when a journalist rang to ask if she would comment on JK Rowling’s demand for her resignation. By the time the reporter hung up, Brindley was in tears.
“I’m never upset in front of my daughter. She said, ‘What’s wrong?’” Brindley recalls. “I said, ‘Someone’s calling for my resignation’. She asked: ‘Who?’ I told her: ‘JK Rowling.’”
Brindley’s little girl looked up at her and said: “That’s one of my favourite authors, Mummy.”
By now Brindley’s eyes are twinkling as she recounts the incident. “What I didn’t then say was: ‘Well, it’s me or her!” she says, dissolving into laughter.
It’s a moment of levity at a serious, defining moment in her life. After years on the wrong end of online campaigns hashtagged #BrindleyMustGo and as the subject of criticism from very prominent online warriors, Brindley, 50, has had enough. She says that she does not expect to be in her post by this time next
year."

The whole organisation needs restructuring from the Trustees down, but she really should have been sacked. At no point did she have the safeguarding of those vulnerable women in mind.

Yes. The whole organisation needs calm, careful assessment and scrutiny.

Chersfrozenface · 26/09/2024 16:54

What is it with these bien-pensant right side of history types using their kids as human shields?

Precipice · 26/09/2024 16:56

You just don't go into it, do you? Your first priority is to shield your child. You'd answer with a deflection or minimising or reassuring answer, yes? A child doesn't even know what 'resignation' means, surely?

I don't know how old SB's child is, but yes, I think a lot of children know the term resignation. Primary school starts at 5 and goes up to 12, so I think it's likely her child understands what resignation is.

What is it with these bien-pensant right side of history types using their kids as human shields?

Indeed.

Every time I think this woman can't sink any lower in my estimations she finds a way to surprise me.

She's despicable.

ArabellaScott · 26/09/2024 17:05

I just tested it on a nearby 11 year old.

Said 11 yo thought it meant 're-signing' a letter.

ArabellaScott · 26/09/2024 17:08

The point is it's not the language a parent would use talking to their child.

I'd say 'work trouble', or reassure them that I'd just had a bad day or something. The weirdness is in making it so emotive and personal and specific, as if the child is able to understand or help in any way.

GwenPost · 26/09/2024 17:14

That 'conversation with child' sounds made up to me.

The woman is clearly deluded - she's not going to lose the job because of 'vitriol and attacks' but because she prioritised GI over the needs of rape survivors ie didnt do her job

and why is she being able to consider 'standing down' - she should have been sacked

larklane17 · 26/09/2024 17:19

“I’m never upset in front of my daughter.
She said, ‘What’s wrong?’”
“I said, ‘Someone’s calling for me to talk about my rape trauma in front of some bloke in a sari who wants to know if I had an orgasm’.

NCsoIcanactonthisIRL · 26/09/2024 17:41

My mother used to dump work shit and relationship shit on me when I was a child, and an undiagnosed autistic one at that. It's one of the reasons why I'm now no-contact with her.

It's spousification and is completely inappropriate.

itsmylife7 · 26/09/2024 17:43

A year ?
How about immediately.

LostFaithinPolice · 26/09/2024 17:44

Team JK Rowling all the way

RadicalisedPastThePointOfSalvation · 26/09/2024 17:48

She says that she does not expect to be in her post by this time next year."

So she is capable of some self-awareness then.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 26/09/2024 17:50

It's not just JK Rowling, it's a rape survivor too.

"I understand you’ve done some good work. I can almost understand that we’ve both been hurt by this. The difference is, it was your job to ensure I wasn’t, and you’ve failed at that. That is why people are asking you to leave."

I'm absolutely failing to have any sympathy for Sandra.

She has harmed rape survivors.

Yes, this. Not just inefficiency or incompetence but deliberate support of policies and people who should not be allowed near a rape crisis centre.

Telling women they should talk about their rape trauma in front of a man who wants to know if they had an orgasm? That is not an innocent mistake.

MsNeis · 26/09/2024 18:41

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 26/09/2024 15:32

She just needs to reframe her trauma. 😂

Ouch 😏

Thank you, that is a tremendous, brave letter, and should be published in The Times too imo

ScarlettSunset · 26/09/2024 19:41

Why is she waiting until this time next year to stand down?
This time next week would be much better.
Or even better still, already.

Igmum · 26/09/2024 19:58

Agree. Resign now Sandy B.

You have harmed rape survivors

You have not respected their boundaries

You have exposed them, without their consent, to scolding from your girlfriend, who should never have been allowed in the room.

You have prioritised your personal political agenda over their dignity, safety and recovery.

When your errors, and the damage they caused, was pointed out you doubled down.

Under your watch TWO rape crisis centres were successfully sued by employees because they had been treated so badly. Your mismanagement damaged these women and lost valuable money for the cause.

And now you blame a best selling author and offload on your primary age daughter?

For shame. Resign now.

user47 · 26/09/2024 15:47

Wow, what an amazing woman to write that.

SensibleSigma · 26/09/2024 21:33

Ironic, her blaming JKR for online vitriol and public attacks. She has no idea.

Thingybob · 26/09/2024 21:53

I just read the article and she still doesn't get it. These are the concluding paragraphs,

To that, Brindley adds a “personal definition”. She is an “intersectional feminist” meaning there are overlaps between different groups of women. For example, she says, “You can be a woman and you can be black and those intersections can lead to greater discrimination — you can both experience sexism and racism.

“I recognise that trans women are women, but I also recognise that there are circumstances where biology matters. I believe with good faith and nuance, we can navigate that without causing harm to anyone.

“Even if we recognise trans women are women, that doesn’t mean that we don’t recognise that trans women’s needs and the needs of women who are born women at times may not necessarily be the same in terms of the service they require.

“This is just about recognising different women have different needs.”

ArabellaScott · 26/09/2024 21:58

“This is just about recognising different women have different needs.”

Like how rape survivors have a need for support and Mridul Wadhwa has a need to lecture them on bigotry?
