‘JK Rowling wants me fired. I just want to help rape survivors’

Sandy Brindley, chief executive of Rape Crisis Scotland, says the online vitriol and public attacks she has faced mean she’s likely to stand down within a year. She spoke to The Times on Sunday

"Last Friday, Sandy Brindley, the chief executive of Rape Crisis Scotland, was collecting her daughter from primary school when a journalist rang to ask if she would comment on JK Rowling’s demand for her resignation. By the time the reporter hung up, Brindley was in tears.
“I’m never upset in front of my daughter. She said, ‘What’s wrong?’” Brindley recalls. “I said, ‘Someone’s calling for my resignation’. She asked: ‘Who?’ I told her: ‘JK Rowling.’”
Brindley’s little girl looked up at her and said: “That’s one of my favourite authors, Mummy.”
By now Brindley’s eyes are twinkling as she recounts the incident. “What I didn’t then say was: ‘Well, it’s me or her!” she says, dissolving into laughter.
It’s a moment of levity at a serious, defining moment in her life. After years on the wrong end of online campaigns hashtagged #BrindleyMustGo and as the subject of criticism from very prominent online warriors, Brindley, 50, has had enough. She says that she does not expect to be in her post by this time next
year."

Rape Crisis Scotland boss apologises for Edinburgh centre failings

As Cromwell said to Parliament in 1653, ‘It is not fit that you should sit here any longer. You have sat here too long for any good you have been doing lately … In the name of God go.’

It's. not what she says it's everyone has to listen. To her because she is J K Rowling. Soo it must be important. Gets on my nerves. If she wants a voice she should go into politics. But on second thoughts perhaps not. She would be even more pompous and irritating. I know she is the darling of MN.

She doesn't need to go into politics to bring about change. She can do something she enjoys and is good at (writing books) which generates so much money she can afford to fund the things she believes in (like single sex services for vulnerable women).

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 27/09/2024 08:01

The very best thing Sandy Brindley could do for rape survivors is to stay away from them.

JK Rowling ate my gerbil.

She turned me into a newt.

There's no need or reason to get into details like that with a primary-aged child. Surely the public-facing nature of the job and the level of public accountability mean that whoever's in the role at any given time has the skills to handle public criticism, including managing the impact on immediate family? Gracefully handling such criticism, including calls for one's resignation, is an inherent part of a job like that.

Online and in some cases even real life "vitriol" often crosses the line to inappropriate, but that's a separate issue and I really doubt that JKR herself has been vitriolic here or encouraged others to be. Like any citizen, JKR has every right to call for a publicly-funded job to be done adequately.

Let's face it, this anecdote with her daughter is completely fictional. Does anyone seriously believe that a batshit activist like Sandy Brindley has, until now, allowed her daughter to innocently enjoy Harry Potter without slagging off JK Rowling?

But you got better….

Edited

Well if she hadn't been bullied by TRAs, she might not be so keen on talking about it.

All for daring to say that sometimes women in vulnerable situations may need all female support.

She's not saying anyone has to listen. People are listening because she has a huge public profile but you are still free to ignore her.

CocoapuffPuff · 27/09/2024 08:27

We HAVE to listen to JKR?
Wow. Thats news to me. Its a law now, is it?
Or are you just pissed off that she just won't shut the fuck up ?

quixote9 · 27/09/2024 08:30

'I just want to help rape survivors’

Really? Running ERCC seems like the wrong job entirely for someone with that goal. Although you certainly succeeded at increasing their violation.

At the very least, someone in a job whose main function is communication of ideas and policies should have a better grasp of the nuances of English.

J k Rowling is a troublemaker. Always spouting forth and upsetting folk. Can't stand her, She thinks because she's rich what she says matters more than anybody else's . It doesn't.

Oh no. Someone posting their opinions on their own Xitter.

How dare she.

SnoopBogg · 27/09/2024 08:35

larklane17 · 26/09/2024 22:33

If it wasn't for that pesky JKR woman platforming letters from rape survivors and financially supporting a dedicated service for female victims of sexual violence. GNASH GNASH.

Right?

motheronthedancefloor · 27/09/2024 09:01

Like her primary aged daughter knows what a resignation is.

People are listening because she has a huge public profile

Lots of people have a huge public profile.

People are listening to JKR because they agree with her.

CocoPlum · 27/09/2024 09:04

I'm going to call bullshit on "that's one of my favourite authors mummy", because I don't believe Brindley would allow Harry Potter in the house!

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 27/09/2024 09:05

LoobiJee · 27/09/2024 09:01

People are listening because she has a huge public profile

Lots of people have a huge public profile.

People are listening to JKR because they agree with her.

Lots of people do, yes.

But many people who disagree with her are also listening to her. That's why they never shut up about the latest thing she has said.

And to begin with, I think people who had not yet formed an opinion on trans issues listened to her simply because she is JK Rowling.

When I first heard people saying she was a hateful bigot, I didn't just take their word for it. Because she is JK Rowling and I already knew a bit about her politics and it seemed very unlikely to me that she had suddenly become hateful and bigoted about a particular vulnerable group overnight, so I wanted to see what she had actually said. Because she is JK Rowling.

LoobiJee · 27/09/2024 09:07

“I recognise that trans women are women, but I also recognise that there are circumstances where biology matters. I believe with good faith and nuance, we can navigate that without causing harm to anyone.“

Who is the “we” that Brindley is referring to in that quote?

Brindley has not acted in good faith.
Brindley doesn’t demonstrate the thinking skills required for nuance,
The political position adopted and enforced by Brindley has caused harm to survivors.
So who is this “we”?

LoobiJee · 27/09/2024 09:08

Yes, fair point, MissScarlet.

LoobiJee · 27/09/2024 09:10

Chersfrozenface · 26/09/2024 16:54

What is it with these bien-pensant right side of history types using their kids as human shields?

I think it’s narcissism and a lack of ethics.

J k Rowling is a troublemaker. Always spouting forth and upsetting folk. Can't stand her, She thinks because she's rich what she says matters more than anybody else's . It doesn't.

Or: 'She's using her platform to speak up for those who don't have the same platform, and whose voices might otherwise not be heard'.

larklane17 · 27/09/2024 09:52

Hmmm JKR's reasoned speaking and deeds out in the public domain, or the unsubstantiated rant of an anonymous internet rando with a Laydee Name?

Who is doing their best for women and girls?

It's a tough one.

larklane17 · 27/09/2024 10:05
  • https://x.com/jammach/status/1835406154123432390* Sandy Brindley’s partner lectures at Edinburgh university on sexual assault, rape and victim support law. Students this past term were instructed ‘make sure your essays are progressive on your interpretation of law or I’m not interested’ That’s a dangerous position to take.

The teaching of Law really has gone down the shitter since my day.

From the article Szygy linked above. Which is a hell of a read. (Not in a good way.)

She has harmed rape survivors.

Even if MW had shot service users, SB would still defend him.

There is absolutely no silver bullet that shakes people out of their TWAW stupor.
I used to think that there was, but if men sexually abusing infants didn't do it, then nothing will.
