'More than 90 private tutors in the UK have been convicted of sexual offences involving children over the past 20 years, the BBC has found.
The children’s commissioner for England is now calling - in light of our findings - for reform of the system, which doesn't require people offering private lessons to be checked before working with young people.
Dame Rachel de Souza says private tutors should undergo the same checks as teachers.
Research published in 2023, external by the educational charity, the Sutton Trust, suggested that 30% of 11–16-year-olds in the UK had received private tutoring at some point.'

Yes, it's a loophole. A big one.

They will presumably need to make it easier to get one as an individual - I'm a tutor and have one through other work, but if I was just self employed as a tutor it would be difficult as it's the employer that applies for an Enhanced Check, you can only get a basic one for yourself.

Also - private tutors are often in their own home or the home of the student, in a one to one situation, and parents may not be nearby.

And this is why I only ever used females - either teachers or students. I was always home, they were in downstairs room next to me, I could hear most of it and I always went into room to offer drink and biscuit.
My daughters - thank god - have an inherent ‘Scottish bullshit detector’ too and know their primary duty is to look after themselves, not to assume all men are well intentioned or to ‘be kind’ to pervy men. These predators seek out easy prey and these include the liberal naive classes.

There was a thread earlier in the week about an individual running a youth group that didn't sound like it was affiliated to any organisations. The poster was rightly concerned.

I guess that's another area that needs a rethink.
