I’m assuming Channel 4 may not cover it as there is not UK competitor. Any idea where to try and watch it? I’m very curious as to what will happen.

This dude is doing well since he stopped racing in male competition

A straight comparison of the athlete’s performances in the men’s and women’s categories tells its own story. Petrillo’s results were conspicuously mediocre by the standards of male para-sports, with personal bests of 25.69sec in the 200m in the 58.01 in the 400. That would not even have come close to the minimum male qualifying standard at these Paralympics of 54.00. Through recategorising as a woman, though, everything changes. Running as male, Petrillo won 11 Italian para-athletics titles. As female, the most controversial participant at these Games has won 27 – not to mention eight Masters titles, six Italian Paralympic records, one place in a European final and two global medals. And all when at least two decades beyond a sprinter’s supposed peak.

I’m not convinced by the eyesight issue either. Identifying as a woman, identifying as visually impaired - if a man can do the first, what’s to stop him doing the second?

Stargardt disease is a genetic condition so most likely has been gene tested. V unlikely any foul play in this regard.
The irony of genetics playing a major part in this story is not lost on me!

Tiswa · 02/09/2024 20:12

The visual impaired should be checked to the nth degree they are incredibly thorough on the classifications and the woman who won didn’t have a guide either

littlbrowndog · 02/09/2024 20:15

All the women this man has cheated from money and titles.

he should be booed by everyone and every commentator should be also booing him

cheater

They can opt to have a guide or not in their classification. I don’t think this is the real issue.

@Tiswa Yes, there were NO competitors in their fifties or forties. A handful in their thirties and most in their twenties. IT IS SO BLOODY OBVIOUS.

Edited

I wonder if this could be grounds for appeal, After all how mean is it to expect a laydee of a certain age to run against younger and fitter competitors. So UNFAIR.

just wrong
something has to change

I am a bit worried about Petrillo’s wellbeing and self esteem following this evenings race.

Not good enough to win races against men.🙁

Not good enough to win races against women.🙁

Does anyone know if they have egg and spoon races in Italy?

CorruptedCauldron · 02/09/2024 21:09

Anyone saying ‘see there’s no advantage for TW as VP didn’t win’ can get in the bin.

Show me a 51-year-old woman with a mum bod who can get anywhere near VP’s score. A 51-year-old woman going through the menopause competing in elite athetics. Nah, not going to happen.

VP wins, it’s unfair for women.
VP loses, it’s still unfair for women, particularly those he deprived of even taking part in the competition in the first place.

Inclusion of a TW in women’s sport will always mean the exclusion of women, win or lose. It happened with Laurel Hubbard and it’s happening again now.

It’s not unkind or politically incorrect to say males have a physical advantage over females. They do.

Open categories for trans and non-binary people are needed to make this fair for women. Undeniably, these open categories would not be great for trans-identified females due to their biological disadvantage compared to males, but if they don’t take testosterone, there’s no reason why they can’t compete in the women’s category anyway.

This isn’t terfery, it’s merfery. No males in female sport, ever. Trans-masc and non-binary females are welcome if they’re not taking testosterone. Job’s a good un.

Oh but that would be cheating.

my point is that it isn’t an issue at all to someone who thought he might have cheated on that front!

Caitlyn Jenner is interesting actually on the subject explaining exactly what they are still superior at (golf swing for example) even after a full operational change

viques · 02/09/2024 21:40

Last leg, as predicted VP brave and wonderful, Paralympic Games diverse and inclusive, blah blah blah ignore half the worlds population because they are sans dicks.

And did I hear Lisa Nandy guesting . Surprise surprise.

I can definitely see something like an egg down the front of those running pants!

Is Lisa Nandy still going on about 'the young trans person in my constituency ...' and 'we need more light and less heat'? I don't care what qualifications she has on paper; she comes across as vapid, hackneyed and tedious.

wonderstuff · 02/09/2024 21:55

I turned off the last leg, the C4 commentary team did a good balanced piece before the race I thought. TLL clearly without any women on its writing/editorial team, so disappointing when men on the left throw women under the bus, predictable but disappointing.

ThreeWordHarpy · 02/09/2024 12:43

I wonder if the Last Leg will cover this? They’re very TWAW, but also champions of disability sports. They’ve already said that the coverage should be about competitiveness and winning, respecting the competitors as athletes. Not patronising inclusiveness and “it’s the taking part that’s important”. Tempted to tweet them an #isitok.

Sadly, it was "congratulations to Valentina..." "how wonderful that the sport is so inclusive "

CorruptedCauldron · 02/09/2024 22:29

How wonderful and inclusive that eligible women athletes have been excluded from their own category in order to include a male person. This male person would have been perfectly welcome to join the male category had he been good enough for it, but no, he has to muscle his way into women’s sport instead. It’s all about making male people feel happy and validated and to hell with women. Welcome to the patriarchy, where men’s wants are more important than women’s needs.

This is where “be kind” has got us. You give an inch, they take a mile.

I see the Mail are pulling no punches with their headline!

Valentina Petrillo race this morning?
Plasmodesmata · 02/09/2024 23:07

Interesting from this BBC article that Petrillo was not the first, mentions an athlete who competed in discus in Rio.
Was that reported on at the time? I know that there was awareness of XY athletes winning women's 400 podium at the Olympics but don't remember any publicity about the Paralympics.

THE BBC Six o'clock news last night........presented Petrillo as the " first 'transgender' person to compete in the paralympics, going on to win a place in the next round". His sex was not mentioned, nor, overtly, that it was a women's race - though it did show him running. It was presented as an achievement rather than a controversy. This was a wilful editorial decision.

It is also a subliminal way of saying " If you want equality, ladies, this is what it looks like".

I found a YouTube livestream in the end. The presenter didn’t acknowledge that VP is trans, just cracked a joke about how ‘they’re 50 years old so there’s hope for me yet’. I think I heard booing coming from the stands though. Commiserations indeed to the woman who lost a place.

Two women lost out in that race. Third should have been second, and fourth should have been third.

And it doesn’t stop there: when biological men set records in the women’s categories, as those records will be nearly impossible to break.
