I cannot see a thread but if there is one already @mumsnet can you merge please?

This person is 50yrs old. How many women are competing at Olympic level at 50yrs old?

I cannot find anything to suggest they ever tried out for the men's team, where they has a biological man should be.

It's not as rare as you'd think. Lorna Johnstone famously competed as an equestrian when she was 70!

The horse is doing all the work!

In sprinting the wo/man is. And 50 is OLD.

Waitingfordoggo · 27/08/2024 08:39

50 is pretty old for a competitive runner I would have thought.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/08/2024 08:40

In the 2016 Olympics, American sprinter Justin Gatlin became the oldest man to win a medal in an individual sprint, earning silver in the 100-meter at 34. The winner of that race, Usain Bolt, retired the following year at age 30.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/08/2024 08:41

Known as the grand old man of sprinting, Collins ran a personal best of 9.93 in 2016 at the age of 40, making him the oldest sprinter ever to break 10 seconds. In 2016, he also made the final of the 60 metres at the World Indoor Championships.

There was a thread with an ambiguous title:

Quick googling!

DublinFemale · 27/08/2024 08:44

Yet this person beat all other competitors I am assuming (could be wrong) younger to represent Italy.

They only transitioned in 2019. I think, they have lived their entire life as a man.

Nothing is sacred, women are not allowed to have anything just for them.

This battle for women feels like pushing water uphill.

The issue here that always seems to be forgotten by mainstream media is the fact that for this athlete to be in the competition, a talented female athlete has been displaced. A talented female athlete is sitting at home because women’s sports are no longer exclusively for females.

Thank you, you said it better than me.

A Paralympic woman has lost their dream, but that's ok, cause Valentina achieved their at her expense.

JFDIYOLO · 27/08/2024 08:50

If it's not enough the athletes have achieved a place after years of dedication to training AND living with a disability, they now have to contend with this.

It's unsporting and unfair.

Igmum · 27/08/2024 08:54

Agree. They actively police the Paralympic boundaries of each sport but ignore flagrant breaches of sex boundaries.

CorruptedCauldron · 27/08/2024 08:55

I also take issue with this person saying it had been their dream since they were a ‘little girl’. This person has fathered children so was never a little girl, just a boy who grew up to become a man, then transitioned much later in life and is now poised to take women’s sporting medals.

Women are people too. The whole point of women’s sports is to allow women to thrive on a level playing field, like for like. How many women would be on the winners’ podium if sport was just sport, with no separate sex-based categories? None.

This is unfair.

I gather Valentina won numerous medals as a man. Can't verify this source but I've seen it elsewhere too https://www.livemint.com/sports/olympics-news/won-11-medals-as-a-man-italian-athlete-valentina-petrillo-will-now-compete-with-women-at-paralympic-games-in-paris-11723626384090.html]]

That's textbook for many of these males. They know it will wind women up.

That's actually an amazingly balanced article from the BBC

DuesToTheDirt · 28/08/2024 17:31

@CorruptedCauldron Women are people too. The whole point of women’s sports is to allow women to thrive on a level playing field, like for like.

That's where you're going wrong, thinking we count as fully-fledged people with actual rights.

DuesToTheDirt · 28/08/2024 17:36

As for the quote in the BBC article from Andrew Parsons, president of the International Paralympic Committee, "We need to, based on science, have a better and probably a united answer to this population...We need to come up with a valid, solid, sound answer for that population."

Just what is wrong with these people that they think we need to revisit the facts and examine the science? Men are stronger and faster than women. It's really that simple. That's why we have separate categories for men and women, and all the hormones and surgery in the world don't make a man in to a woman. How do they not know this?

ChaboTheWolfBaby · 28/08/2024 19:58

Reading the thread title, I momentarily thought that the Paralympics had created a competition category for XY athletes with DSDs, to avoid shunting them into women's sports. That would be nice.

Cailleach1 · 28/08/2024 20:37

@Gofastboatsmojito ;” I gather Valentina won numerous medals as a man.“

As humans can’t magically change their sex, anything he ever won would be as a man. I gather, in the past, he won medals fairly competing against other men.

However, now anything he ‘won’ would be as a man against women in the women’s category. An unscrupulous cheat will always try to get away with cheating. The problem is that the organisers are allowing this unfair competition in the women’s category. They are allowing gobshites of men to compete against women. Their advantage comes simply from being males, not being any good as athletes.

Cailleach1 · 28/08/2024 20:40

So, yer man wants to expose himself to women in the shower, whilst committing voyeurism oogling them as they shower. Human rights (for a certain type of individual, with a special name), isn’t it?
