Lobby Day in parliament - Sex Matters

Imnobody4 · 14/08/2024 18:53

I can't make it unfortunately

On Wednesday 11th September, we will be going to the UK Parliament to lobby MPs to stand up for single-sex services and make the Equality Act clear. Will you join us?

The new government has said it will protect single-sex services for women, but it hasn’t said how. The current approach isn’t working. Service providers and employers are afraid to uphold clear rules. Women are being forced to undress in front of trans-identified males in their workplaces and leisure facilities, are being searched by trans-identified male police officers, and cannot be confident that “same-sex” healthcare provision or support after domestic abuse or rape will be genuinely female-only. What is a lobby day?A lobby day is when people go to Parliament together to speak to their MPs. You write to your MP in advance to tell them you are coming and ask for a meeting.More details in link.https://sex-matters.org/take-action/lets-go-to-parliament/

I’ve been advised that it might not be worth attending if MP won’t meet. Coz I’ll just be hanging around. It’s about a 2 hour journey for me to London. But equally I’d love to meet some other women there. So not sure what to do yet. It’d be using up the very last of my annual leave for the year.

You can come anyway & try this. www.naht.org.uk/NAHT-Edge/ArtMID/694/ArticleID/921/'Green-carding'-your-MP-in-five-steps

BeechLeaves · 02/09/2024 06:46

Thanks for the info. She’s said she’s not gonna be there at that time. And has now said twice that she won’t meet with me. So not sure if it’s worth it. So annoying. I still might come for the drinks at the end. Just deciding whether I should make the journey.

AReasonablePerson · 03/09/2024 15:45

I'm coming. Umed and ahed for ages and didn't have the annual leave. But decided to steal a day from Christmas and come along. I think the sign up deadline is tomorrow at 5pm. Not sure about my MP, she is newly elected having replaced the previous Tory incumbent who'd been with us for over a decade. Bit nervous to be honest. But I can't keep moaning and feeling this angry about it all and not acting in some capacity to stand up. See you there.

BeechLeaves · 03/09/2024 17:09

That’s pretty much how I feel. Like I keep moaning and feeling angry so needed to do something. I was nervous about it. But I think I’m not gonna come though due to MP not wanting to meet. I would love to come just to meet more people who are as pissed off about this as me. But I don’t think I will now.

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 03/09/2024 17:13

My MP’s now said she can’t make it & wants to meet in the constituency at some point, but I’m still going on Wednesday.

As much as anything else, I always feel really energised & recharged after something like this.

BeechLeaves · 03/09/2024 17:37

That’s good she’s agreed to meet, even if not in parliament. Nice you’re gonna go anyway! Is it far?

borntobequiet · 03/09/2024 18:13

I'm pretty sure I'm going now. Will fill in the form tomorrow.
Getting there by train is no problem, but I can't travel home on any train leaving before 19:00 without paying a lot for it, which can make it a long day. But have arranged to meet my godson for a catch up in the late afternoon/early evening, which will be nice (and long overdue).

Well no, I’m in London anyway so I admit that makes a difference!

kiterunning · 04/09/2024 09:06

Surely an mp can't refuse to meet a constituent.
If not in parliament then in the constituency. I've had two such meetings locally and aired my views- my mp gave me a good hearing and subsequently set up an inquiry into the local prescription of puberty blockers.

kiterunning · 04/09/2024 09:08

I appreciate that this is a different subject but still..

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 04/09/2024 11:30

I've had a response from my MP, he's willing to meet with me, so it seems I'm really going to do this thing. 😰

I actually don’t know if an MP can refuse to meet

EllieMary1984 · 04/09/2024 22:35

I am going. I am going it will be my first time going to parliament or anything like that. But I see that womans rights are being undermined and something needs to be done. I would urge other woman who are feeling unsure or nervous to come along. We need your voices. My MP has ignored me unsurprisingly. But I can see from this woman are refusing to be ignored.

BeechLeaves · 05/09/2024 11:04

I think it’ll be a great day. I’ve decided not to go due to the distance. But I hope there are other events that I can be useful at.

AReasonablePerson · 09/09/2024 13:43

I'm still waiting on a next steps response from SM about this. Although have received a generic email and also followed up. Anyone else?

Last info I had was they were going to do Webnair on Tuesday evening about it (I think that's the right word), I'm waiting on the email for that.

EllieMary1984 · 09/09/2024 17:17

Same here I got an email saying there would be an online meeting between 7pm and 8:30 PM on Tuesday. More information would be sent nearer the time.

AReasonablePerson · 09/09/2024 17:50

I just got that too. Thanks for reassurance 😊

SallyLockheart · 09/09/2024 18:13

train ticket booked. MP said he can't see us - prior long standing commitment - tricky since he's only been an MP since the last election - but will follow Sex Matters lead and see if someone in his office can meet us.

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 09/09/2024 18:37

My MP’s offered to meet in the constituency instead, so I’m going to come for the photo & drinks after as advised on the latest email.

Imnobody4 · 09/09/2024 18:44

Good luck to everyone who's going.

https://sex-matters.org/posts/updates/anneliese-dodds-must-listen-to-women/

Hundreds of women are coming to Parliament on Wednesday on a mission to change her mind as part of the Stand up for single-sex services campaign.
They are going to tell her, and other MPs, how the Equality Act is failing to protect women, and how men who claim to be women are gaining access to women’s spaces, services and sports.

Just bumping this although I see Sex Matters says signing up to "their" Lobby is now closed. https://sex-matters.org/stand-up-for-single-sex-services/lets-go-to-parliament/

Whether you can go and try and see your MP I'm not clear. They many not even be there!

Sex Matters have produced a crib sheet https://sex-matters.org/stand-up-for-single-sex-services/use-our-crib-sheet-when-you-meet-your-mp/

Although I am sure most can work out exactly what they want to say.

Just in view of Labour slyly indicating that they have no interest in women's sex based rights, ie new Chair of Women and Equalities Committee will be full on TWAW, and not even making a formal statement but Women's Minister saying Labour has not intention to reform the EA (despite the democratic process of petitions to the House of Commons which led to a meeting, and a response to that still not having been made).

I really hope you all have a fab day!! I’ve just bought the women who wouldn’t wheesht book to inspire me to keep fighting, despite setback from MP this time.

WhatAMessWales · 10/09/2024 14:39

Bit far for me, but very best wishes to all those women travelling up to London for this tomorrow.
