Thanks, it's a good sign that he's speaking quite clearly.

"...until the science alters."
Lol. That'll be for quite a long time, then.
Yes, it does sound very positive.

Thelnebriati · 12/08/2024 00:35

Fingers crossed this gets sorted in time for the next Olympics.

StealthSpinach · 12/08/2024 05:15

Yes - good news.
Hope it is indeed sorted soon, as Queensland is in a right mess regarding GI, so Brisbane 32 will be shocking without some reality based regulations.
Anyone over 16 can change their “gender marker” on their birth certificate once every 12 months here - that’ll make it dead easy for XY boxers and other athletes unless sanity prevails.

And presumably criminals and those who want to go undercover, to dodge the system.
Sounds very sensible.

"Coe: I'll stand up for women"

Userxyd · 12/08/2024 06:25

Excellent news! I love the second to last sentence of that article, but the last sentence is a bit strange - why would he create any suggestion that biology-based rules don't have to be permanent? Last thing we need is this flip flopping every ten years with every change in leader. Once this madness is sorted that should be the end of it forever!

“I have a responsibility to preserve the female category. And I will go on doing that until a successor decides otherwise or the science alters.”

WarriorN · 12/08/2024 06:51

I think that's fair; this needs to be scientifically led not ideologically.

The science will be clear on this.

It's the only way to move it from "culture war" to scientific facts, which can then be used effectively in debates to make rules. Which I think is also the way Labour appear to be approaching it all.

Perhaps the fact he is pro women will harm Coe’s chances of succeeding. How are they selected does anyone know?

Seems likely. Can you imagine the conflict of interest!? Not necessarily for him, but for the rest of the IOC: how can we have a President fixated on restricting male access to female sporting categories when the Olympics are hosted in a country that embraces allowing males into female categories? The IOC are not famous for an my commitment to ethical practices.
