I wanted to hug every one of these young people in the article. It's the same journey as Keira Bell went through and the US clinics have even fewer safeguards than the NHS. There does not appear to be any concerns over co-morbidities or social contagion amongst teens. The women profiled fit the same pattern as a lot of the kids at Tavistock.

How Did Planned Parenthood Become One of the Country’s Largest Suppliers of Testosterone?

When she was a teenager, Cristina Hineman started testosterone after a 30-minute consult at Planned Parenthood. She’s now suing them. ‘I regretted everything.’

If malpractice lawsuits like Hineman’s are successful, they have the potential to reshape the currently accepted medical standard of gender care. This can be summarized as setting children on a path to medical transition, and treatment on demand for adults. This applies even when these adults are still teenagers and legally restricted from activities such as buying alcohol or renting a car.
“Treatment without a competent evaluation shouldn’t be foisted on you whether you’re 15 or 30,” says Kevin Keller, an attorney who is consulting pro bono on several detransitioner cases brought by firms across the country. “Vulnerability is the issue. If there’s no comprehensive screening in place before a medical intervention that’s going to have permanent effects,” that’s a breach of duty, he argues.

Thoughtful.

“It’s a medicalized version of normal teen rebellion. And I got completely sucked into that.”
...
Occasionally people assume she’s male, but she’s made a conscious decision to shrug it off because getting “emotionally bogged down about being misgendered” is what led to transition in the first place, she tells me. “I had the realization that I can’t continue to let this bother me in any direction.”

An intelligent and compassionate young woman. What a shame the adults she went to for help couldn't have been as intelligent and compassionate.

Once these law suits roll in, and they surely will, then it'll be the end of the road for this ideology.
Nothing talks like money.

That was a great piece.

Maybe - but are we not concerned that this is a two pronged attack by the US right wing on agents for women’s reproductive rights.

Igmum · 08/08/2024 21:10

@Bohemond23 I thoroughly support women's reproductive rights. Planned Parenthood has done a great job in this area.

I do not and will not support any organisation that seeks to damage vulnerable children. The ideologues who fail to look at evidence and medically sterilise teenagers who are autistic or anxious or depressed or have been the victims of sexual assault or are in care. That is genuinely evil. When Planned Parenthood do that they are doing wrong and should be stopped. It makes them an awful lot of money, but the consequences for those children are devastating.

Bohemond23 · 08/08/2024 21:20

Oh I totally agree. But sadly it is the same organisation and a big opportunity for the right to conflate the two.

Igmum · 08/08/2024 21:36

Unfortunately that's a weapon handed to the right by PP themselves. Yes people will misuse it. We still need to campaign against the harm they have done

annejumps · 08/08/2024 22:25

Planned Parenthood chose to make a series of unforced errors to send them down this path. (Likewise for the Democratic Party as a whole.) PP did not have to throw so much effort into supplying hormones (which have nothing to do with reproductive rights or care IMO, as a mission) yet they chose to, and they apparently chose to do so haphazardly, carelessly, and at whatever cost. And now Roe v. Wade has been overturned. Who knows whether that would have happened if PP hadn't diverted its efforts so enthusiastically into trans issues and in erasing female people from the language used?

That is the first thing that jumped out to me.

Planned Parenthood were absolute idiots for getting into this.

Crazy as it sounds I think they deserve to get sued as they will have caused a lot of unfixable harm. Flood gates on this issue all over the States could be what finishes them off.

They have armed the Republicans, the utter fools. It is an own goal.

God help American women.

The Democratic Party has fallen into the same trap esp with Harris’s VP pick.

If Trump is able to use the transgender issue sufficiently to either split the democratic vote or create a negative backlash, I will be so angry. Why have liberal thinkers been so ridiculously naive about TWAW? And for this issue they would inflict Trump on the world? His reelection would be the worst possible outcome for Americas and globally. God help us all then.
