No shortage of them!

Just watching the amazing Katie Ledecky crushing the opposition over 1500m. What a woman.

BBC just doing a nice montage of all UK’s gold winning women over the years - really inspiring.

MrsMitford3 · 05/08/2024 21:39

Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade has come back after doing her ACL THREE times!!!

lonelywater · 06/08/2024 01:23

One of my all time favourite Olympians is Pricilla Welch. She came sixth in the first olympic ladies marathon in 1984, aged 40 in a time of 2:28:54 (to put that time in context, the winner in 2020 came in at 2 hours 27 minutes and 20 seconds) What puts her story into the "Oh fuck off, your just making this up now" class is that she didn't take up running at all, in any way shape or form until she was 35. Oh, and before then she was a pack a day smoker. It is not known if she trained on fish and chips.

londonmummy1966 · 06/08/2024 09:39

Obviously Simone Biles but I am glad actually that although she had the great Olympics she deserved, she didn't sweep the table and that Rebeca Andrade, Alice D' Amato and Kaylia Nemour all got golds as well. I was impressed that Alice was able to come out and deliver her beam routine so calmly when everyone else was so rattled. Also a shout out to Qiu Qiyuan who knew she was up against Nemour and came and delivered all out in an amazing routine of equal difficulty - really left her all in the air on that one.

Beatrice Chebet from Kenya who has just won Gold at 5000m and looks like she has just been out for an afternoon stroll, the speed she found in the last few metres after having run so far already was incredible and then she went around congratulating and helping up all the other competitors. What a woman.

the 5k race got a bit messy, as well it might between athletes whose whole careers end up boiling down to these few minutes of race time. a reminder that women are neither uniformly sex kittens nor Florence Nightingale types nor anything else, they're just a wide range of people, for whom extreme circumstances can bring out bits of both good and bad.

Writing from the comparatively nothing perspective on nursing along a dodgy ACL for years (reluctance to have more surgery on that knee) I'm in awe of someone who has had this x3 times! One of the many effectively separate universe differences between elite athletes and someone who does her best to turn out regularly as a member of the relatively fit public.

Biscofffan · 06/08/2024 16:21

Emma Finucane, Katie Marchant and Sophie Capewell were a joy to watch in the cycling. Femke Bol absolutely blows my mind, as do all these amazing women. This has been the games where, for me, the women have been the greatest athletes with so many memorable performances so far. They are amazing 🤩

Biscofffan · 06/08/2024 16:22

Oh, and the commentary by the women has also been brilliant!

murasaki · 06/08/2024 16:24

The race I'm most looking forward to is the 400 hurdles, Bol v McLaughlin-Levrone.

elgreco · 06/08/2024 19:25

Female gymnasts were unreal. Simone Biles is fantastic.

EasternStandard · 06/08/2024 19:26

Too many to list I’ve loved it all

They are brilliant

thirdfiddle · 06/08/2024 20:57

Loving this thread. And lovely to see so many past olympic heroines getting stuck into commentating and punditry.

parkrun500club · 06/08/2024 21:33

Jess Ennis and Jo Pavey both won medals after having children - Jess at Olympic and World level, and Jo at European and Commonwealth level.

Summer Mcintosh in the swimming

Phoebe Gill and Georgia Bell

Anna Henderson

The nine members of the 2022 Team USA Olympic figure skating team will be given their gold medals tomorrow at the Paris Olympic Games. The female skaters who will receive their medals are Karen Chen, Alexa Knierim, Madison Chock and Madison Hubbell. They had originally received bronze, but after the disqualification of Kamila Valieva for doping, they are now finally receiving their gold medals.

Also, I personally feel very sorry for Kamila. She was only 15 at the last Winter Olympics, and my guess would be she was also a victim in this mess.

All of the Kayak Cross paddlers - how is that not deadly!

FlirtsWithRhinos · 06/08/2024 21:52

I'm not enough into sport to properly appreciate the achievements, so what has stood out for me are the kayak cross and the skateboarding because they both look so bloody fun and because the women and girls competing against each other were also having a laugh with each other.

Kayak is a heap of fun and excitement. (Even though you spend a lot of the time planning to avoid hypothermia in the UK.)

They run it every so often at Lee Valley, iirc.

tobee · 06/08/2024 22:15

Really enjoyed seeing/hearing conmentary Jessica Ennis Hill, Laura Kenny, Katherine Granger, Denise Lewis, Rebecca Adlington and Sharon Davies to remind me of past glorious women to name just a few. And Jenny Meadows who co coaches Keely Hodgkinson. And the legendary Emma Hayes who coaches US women football team just got into the final.

And that's just the British ones. Loads more around the world who have impressed.

All the teenage girl skate boarders. So cool, happy in their skins and celebrating each other. Really lovely to see young girls just having so much fun

Yes, Femke Bol is my new favourite athlete. Looks amazing running, so easy and her anchor leg in the mixed relay was brilliant.

Hard to think of any other Olympic sport where you would have a 14,15 and 16yo on the podium. Gymnastics back in the day I suppose.

I don't live in London but my paddling friend lives very near there - I'll check she knows!

They also look so small - not sure if it's an advantage - but the gymnasts look slimmer but taller if that makes sense?
