Poster at the GP surgery

FondOfOwls · 21/07/2024 09:46

I recently went to register at a new GP surgery, due to moving house.
Then, upon leaving I noticed a huge, hand made poster stating 'Woman? Transman? Non binary?? Get your cervix checked'.
In general I don't mind this phrase when called for a smear, but it made me feel very uncomfortable-I have a DD6 who would no doubt question it if she noticed it.
I think I'd just tell her it's still women and rather tell her what cervix is, but AIBU to feel it is not appropriate? I'd also worry someone could challenge me if they heard me saying that to my DD.
Receptionist sporting a rainbow lanyard of course.
Feeling a bit disheartened as I spent HOURS filling in the paperwork for them, and the next nearest surgery is not very good and not very close.

odd how the “oh you big meanie” posters turn up on these threads but never on the ones discussing how the dangerous nonsense about suicide spouted by the likes of jolyon & LOJ has been shown to be total lies or the ones where women are being forced by their employees to change in front of a man because he’s declared special lady feelings

so strange

People can post where they like. Comments like that make some posters reluctant to post on this forum at all.

The poster being discussed advised transmen to get their cervix checked.

Pp was right, you're after a circular argument.

What if a nb man asks?
A man doesn't have a cervix.
Can you tell the difference between a man and a trans man?
Trans men are on the poster
Next q. Can you tell the difference between a NB man and a trans man?

I don't understand your point.

If a NB man asks whether they need a cervical smear, would you know they were not a trans man?

AReasonablePerson · 21/07/2024 14:34

@zeibesaffron it isn't a drama. It is a person on a forum dedicated to discussing the issues relating to Sex and Gender, explaining that she feels discomfort at the way in which some attitudes and ideas are being normalised. I do too. It isn't a drama. It is a reasonable response for someone to have who has considered the issues that this societal change pushes for. Many (I'd hazard a guess at most) women feel like this.

sonshineandshowers · 21/07/2024 14:39

Even if you do hate trans people it's a bit much to wish cervical cancer on them.

cupcaske123 · 21/07/2024 14:42

quantumbutterfly · 21/07/2024 14:28

The poster says that non binary, transmen and women should get their cervix checked. It's clear from the poster that if you're non binary and have a cervix, that you should get it checked. Most men know they don't need smear tests.

PrinceYakimov · 21/07/2024 14:42

I am GC but I would actually be greatly encouraged by this poster. It means that the message about women finding it dehumanising to be named by body parts and needing clear language about healthcare is beginning to break through. Otherwise it would be all 'cervix-havers' and 'uterus-bearers'. It's a massive step forward from where we were (frustrating though it is to say that).

WeaselCheeks · 21/07/2024 14:50

I think that it's not a terrible poster - it's reminding women and females who don't identify as women that they still need to pay attention to their biology, because biology doesn't care about how you identity.

Although arguably non-binary males might kick up a fuss, as they're included on the poster due to the lack of modifier on the non-binary bit (nb male or mb female) - but that would be directly admitting that sex is, for the most part, binary, and we can't be having that!

Could have been worse, could have said cervix owners, or cis-women. Or, if "transmen are men", just 'men' instead of 'transmen', which would get very confusing...

Honestly, I don't envy people that have to produce these sorts of posters, as being factual can cause offence. 😬

AReasonablePerson · 21/07/2024 14:50

@sonshineandshowers no-one hates trans people. Just some adults are advocating for a mature approach to public communications. Quite a leap you made there!!

Most men? Or all men?
Are there men who think they have a cervix?

Btw can you tell the difference between a NB man and a trans man?

The pp who suggested 'born female, get your cervix checked ' (assuming you have a basic biological vocab and understanding of English) is my favourite suggestion.

AReasonablePerson · 21/07/2024 14:54

@WeaselCheeks I think you have nailed this issue. Being factual can cause offence. What a time to be alive!!

It's a post reminding women or anyone else with a cervix to book a smear test. Quite hard to be offended by that unless non-binary people or trans men getting medical care doesn't sit right with you.

Why are you asking me if there are men who think they have a cervix?

What does this hypothetical NB person look like and how do they present themselves, bearing in mind that they don't associate with either sex? Do you have any recent photos?

quantumbutterfly · 21/07/2024 15:03

Google says f to m surgery may leave the uterus, no idea if it's accessible after phalloplasty.

I'm sure you're not avoiding answering my question.

It's really quite a complicated issue isn't it?

Apparently India Willoughby thinks they have a cervix, would a smear test be appropriate?

quantumbutterfly · 21/07/2024 15:03

Generally if you have a full hysterectomy they remove the cervix.

Wistfullythinking · 21/07/2024 15:08

One would really hope that anyone changing gender has enough knowledge about their body to know of they have a cervix or not. But I have been down the reddit rabbit hole briefly, and discovered an astonishing lack of knowledge.

All the more reason to wonder who is actually pushing this trend, and why.

quantumbutterfly · 21/07/2024 15:11

cupcaske123 · 21/07/2024 15:06

Generally if you have a full hysterectomy they remove the cervix.

But the Cleveland clinic (one example) says they may not perform hysterectomy with phalloplasty.

Again, I don't understand your point. Women who have had a full hysterectomy will have had their cervix removed and won't need a smear.

Sleepersausage · 21/07/2024 15:16

I have a nearly six year old and if she asked me what it meant I would just tell her? What is the issue, what part of that might she be corrupted by?

I imagine a woman who has had a full hysterectomy will know if she hasn't got a cervix and therefore won't need a smear.
I wonder how accessible a cervix is, if a phalloplasty has been done whilst leaving the uterus in place.
Complicated indeed!

LoremIpsumCici · 21/07/2024 15:20

I think the poster is good!
They sadly need to do this because some young adults truly believed that transitioning meant changing your sex. Yes! There have been trans teen boys suprised to get pregnant. There are transmen who have no idea that they still have a cervix and transwomen who think they do.

This poster tells the whole world that women, transmen and female nonbinary are all of the female sex. The poster shows in a medical setting that NO you can’t change your SEX. It is real. It is fact.

The bigger the better so kids can grasp this reality too imho,

quantumbutterfly · 21/07/2024 15:11

I think that just means they can’t do both surgeries in one session. Afaik, you have to have a hysterectomy months before a phalloplasty.
