Poster at the GP surgery

FondOfOwls · 21/07/2024 09:46

I recently went to register at a new GP surgery, due to moving house.
Then, upon leaving I noticed a huge, hand made poster stating 'Woman? Transman? Non binary?? Get your cervix checked'.
In general I don't mind this phrase when called for a smear, but it made me feel very uncomfortable-I have a DD6 who would no doubt question it if she noticed it.
I think I'd just tell her it's still women and rather tell her what cervix is, but AIBU to feel it is not appropriate? I'd also worry someone could challenge me if they heard me saying that to my DD.
Receptionist sporting a rainbow lanyard of course.
Feeling a bit disheartened as I spent HOURS filling in the paperwork for them, and the next nearest surgery is not very good and not very close.

I agree that it's absolutely fine. Doesn't pretend some women don't have cervixes, includes the type of men that do. If people want to identify as non binary they're also entitled to a smear if they are female and have a cervix.

I'm pretty sure transmen wouldn't like this poster anyway, it was bright pink and I think there were some hearts on it too 😂

I have a minor problem with the poster in that it appears to be inviting all non-binary people for cervical screening- it doesn’t exclude the male bodied ones.
If it’s good to ensure everyone with a cervix gets included, then surely we need to also be explicit about who’s not included.

Wouldn't common sense dictate that or they could ask at reception.

That's why 'women' should be enough.... I understand why it isn't, even if I don't agree with it. It's just becoming ridiculous.

I actually think it's quite a gender critical poster. You can't outrun your cervix basically.

emsie03 · 21/07/2024 11:18

What a surprise more people on this website hating the fact that other people exist!
If your daughter could read it so what all you have to say is that the doctors are making sure everyone who needs that done is getting it done, how often are you realistically at the gp it literally doesn't affect you just ignore it

wheretoyougonow · 21/07/2024 11:18

Never been on Reddit but might just try it if less judgemental women are there.

ebadame · 21/07/2024 11:19

"Do you have a cervix? If yes then have a smear" doesn't really help people who may not know they have a cervix so they have to spell it out.

BobbyBiscuits · 21/07/2024 11:19

When I was a kid there were massive posters with gravestones on them saying you could die of AIDS. There were posters about TB, about sexual health? I can't imagine why a child would be confused by a medical poster about cervixes?
Kids see medical info adverts all the time and if they ask a question about it then you explain in a child friendly way. Or if you don't want to just say, 'oh it's nothing.' I would roll my eyes a bit but wouldn't be concerned for a child seeing it.

How would reception know if a patient has a cervix?

I imagine that if a man walked up to reception and said do I need to have my cervix checked, the receptionist would say, you don't have one, so no.

Well most the mods there don't put up with transphobia and calling non binary and trans people made up things so it's better in that aspect

how do you know if it's a biological man or a transman.... could well be a transman with a cervix!?

The transmen were advised to get their cervix checked on the poster.

Because a transman (someone biologically female) and non binary who are biologically female, have cervix’s so they need to get them checked?

They're all women.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 21/07/2024 11:27

odd how the “oh you big meanie” posters turn up on these threads but never on the ones discussing how the dangerous nonsense about suicide spouted by the likes of jolyon & LOJ has been shown to be total lies or the ones where women are being forced by their employees to change in front of a man because he’s declared special lady feelings

so strange

Isn’t this circular logic? If common sense would dictate that male non-binary people know they don’t have a cervix, why would female non-binary people need telling that they do?

That's interesting, how does someone know of they have a cervix?

I mean what with all the variations in body types and everything?

Yes, I agree with this

wheretoyougonow · 21/07/2024 11:37

@Theeyeballsinthesky they are totally different issues. A biological female being forced to change in front of a biological male has nothing to do with the medical profession encouraging anyone with a cervix to get checked so they don't die of cancer.

Most women know that smear tests are avoided because of embarrassment. It is a good message. No matter how you identify, if you have a cervix come to get it checked. How anyone can take issue with that is surprising to me. They have used the word women in it so not irradiating female language.

Some women don't know about their body. If men think they have a cervix, then they obviously don't either. You'd be very surprised about how little people know about their bodies.

How about we redesign the poster for them? How about something along the lines of:

Born female? Get your cervix checked.

I think that ought to do it 😊

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 21/07/2024 11:40

As long as 'women' is top, front and centre I can't get worked up about all the rest they have to put in to tick the boxes. Transmen and non-binary know they have cervix's (as they are women) but at least the word women isn't being replaced.

I could live with that. It's silly but at least it's clear without compromising women. Hopefully this stuff will start to fall out of fashion soon! I'd keep your doctors place.

But it IS compromising women, by suggesting they're an identity rather than a sex class.

That said, I too could probably live with this poster. At least it doesn't do the godawful "women AND.." nonsense.
