Some very good news. Transpires that Jolyon's claim of increased suicides since puberty blockers were banned is incorrect.

Review of Suicides and Gender Dysphoria at the Tavi and Portman NHS Trust: Independent Report.

By Professor Louis Appleby, University of Manchester
Department of Health and Social Care adviser on suicide prevention

Aim of this review
I have reviewed data provided by NHS England (NHSE) on suicides by young patients of the gender services at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, based on an audit at the trust. The specific aim is to examine evidence for a large rise in suicides claimed by campaigners.

Try to get over the shock, @Theeyeballsinthesky Life at the BBC is likely to continue as normal...

The top Features item in the bar opposite that article is really important: 'Drag queens feel the pinch of rising costs'. Much needed, especially as it might be more than, what, 24 hours now since we had a drag queen story?

Theeyeballsinthesky · 19/07/2024 20:20

I thought the BBC had important reporting about drag queens to do rather than reporting this?

Hah! Missed this 😂

does the man have no friends who can stage an intervention? Long since past time he was dragged off stage left with a shepherds crook (a la Cosmo Smallpiece-one for the teenagers there). The man is stark, staring bonkers.

Him and Sophie Molly would be an interesting team...

Does BBC really think today was the day to write their usual wankery about Drag Queens?

Seriously BBC? I mean was this supposed to be you throwing a bone to the TQI+ after actually doing your job for a change and writing a serious news article about the dangers of TRAs?

these nutters really do think they are possessed of the righteous truth, dont they? they all loudly proclaim their batshit notions as if they are competing in a mentalist olympics for the gold medal.

There must be a data source for his claim. Why doesn’t he provide the evidence? Or is it just anecdotal?

Only you can see the figments of your own imagination.

SidewaysOtter · 19/07/2024 22:59

Dear old Joly does seem in need of a biccy and a blanket. And possibly an emotional support dog.

SlipperyLizard · 20/07/2024 05:58

JoMo is so deep into the cult that even a slap
down by the Government doesn’t make him pause for thought, it just provokes another Twitter mega-thread.

Even if he disagrees with the numbers, the criticism for his irresponsible reporting/use of suicide for his own agenda should have stung if he had any self-awareness.

He says the Samaritans didn’t respond, and takes that as further proof that he’s right rather than perhaps the Samaritans are taking this review rather more seriously than him.

Good to see a quote from LGB Alliance in the Guardian, though.

borntobequiet · 20/07/2024 06:22

The BBC is so weirdly invested in drag queens. It’s the go-to topic to ward off any criticism or debunking of genderism, like saying ten Hail Marys and hoping for the best.

Perhaps there's a space for Joly in the polycule?

JuneFTW · 20/07/2024 07:13

This bit in particular stood out:

"What you are left with is a need to balance risks - of letting ideologues drive through dangerous measures without public pushback or pointing out that the measures are indeed dangerous"

How can they not see this is what we've been trying to do?

I can only imagine that the man has surrounded himself with people who are cheering him on.

Or shrugging them all off on his determined Path of Righteousness.

Of course, if the references I’ve seen are correct and he does have a trans child, he has an awful lot of skin in this game.

Kucinghitam · 20/07/2024 07:48

All I can say is, these Righteous folx who are apparently so concerned for the lives of distressed children, are really really keen to increase the distress of said children and the contagious danger to those lives.

Mirahelp · 19/07/2024 19:53

As the mother of a vulnerable barely over 18 who has purchased hormones online on the flimsiest of self diagnosis with zero medical oversight I am grimly pleased to see both Webberley & Maugham slapped down today.

I’m in exactly the same situation @Mirahelp. Horrid to think there are more of us.

Jolyon should hang his head in shame. It's about time there was a robust push-back on his behaviour.

Why is he so invested in puberty blockers dors anyone know? He’s surely an intelligent man, so he knows the damage they do.

ValerieDoonican · 20/07/2024 08:28

PriOn1 · 19/07/2024 21:29

I don’t know how much truth there is in Jolyon’s claim of an increase in deaths of children on waiting lists, but even if there is an increase in the death rate, without information regarding what caused those deaths, it is dangerous speculation to use them as some kind of “gotcha” by the unproven claim that it was caused by the ban on puberty blockers.

Apart from any other considerations, during that period there was a worldwide pandemic, with lockdowns which likely worsened the mental health problems of many young people and made it harder to access care of any type.

As was mentioned upthread, irrational parents and children are buying illegal medications from the internet.

The most sickening thing is that this is a manufactured psychological phenomenon, where children are being told they are likely to commit suicide if they don’t get their way. If there was a natural phenomenon, where children were so distressed about their sex that they committed suicide, it would have been recognized long ago. If there has been a rise in suicide, it is manufactured by those who are pushing the medical model of child transition.

Such an important point @PriOn1

"There is also no denying the emails I have from terrified parents who are, eg, sleeping on the floor of their child's bedroom to watch over them."

So - who terrified them then, Jolyon?

Cantunseeit · 20/07/2024 08:45

@PriOn1 Exactly this:

Crap! Can't work out how to bold quote above. Bit below is my comment

As a parent of a child steeped in this bollocks, with a strong gut feeling that the transition your child at all costs message did not stack up, the campaigning of people like JM and institutional capture gave us nowhere to turn for help for our child.

It may be paranoia but what parents are going to present their child to "the authorities" when the approved "treatment" is what it has been? Specially as school and even some trusted (now ex) friends made it clear we were irresponsible bigots for not getting straight on to the GIDs waiting list.

So yeah, I do know what it's like to have been on suicide watch and frisked her room for harmful substances. And it's fucking frightening to find the world seems to have collectively lost its mind.

Thank goodness for Cass and reports like this one.

RedToothBrush · 20/07/2024 09:03

Remember that any website or social media sight sharing information or comments that may lead to the harm of children or vulnerable people is liable for those comments and information in law.

It falls foul of the Online Safety Act.

I wonder if spreading the social contagion of suggesting suicide rates will increase is covered? It would strike me that it should be.

This is wanting the trans community to come to harm to prove the point of allies....

ReliablyMum · 20/07/2024 10:44

It's also interesting to note in the most recent national prevention strategy (2023) rates across all young people <25 have been increasing - particularly so for females. Although this is now levelling off, it is still a priority area of concern. Another reason why accurate recording of sex is important.

These issues are way more complex than just puberty blockers being the answer to prevent suicides - it's ignorant and dangerous to link the two in the way we've seen. Preaching to the converted here mainly, I know.
