3 year sentence for beating partner until unconscious

The original sentence for the man who battered his partner until she was unconscious was 4 years. But because he co-operated with the GardaĆ, plead guilty & said he was sorry the judge decided to knock a year off his prison time.

This is the case where the GardaĆ were called because the woman’s 7yo went wandering out in his pyjamas to find help - & mercifully the man who found him & had him get in his van kept him safe & called the GardaĆ. The victim impact statement wasn’t read - & of course only the woman he hit could submit one. The children - yes, children plural, the wee boy’s siblings were all outside the house when the GardaĆ arrived. They couldn’t submit statements despite the trauma they experienced & having had to spend Christmas in a refuge.

Such a massive sentence reduction is absurd.

Woman's beating by partner left boy, 7, on winter streets in pyjamas trying to get help

The Dublin man who beat his partner unconscious has been jailed for three years

What a piece of scum. Poor woman, poor kids.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/07/2024 14:25

The woman and the children have a life sentence. That trauma will affect those children forever, possibly their children as well. But he said 'sorry'. Even though we know DV is pervasive behaviour that almost never changes.

I swear male justice staff, from GardaĆ/police to judges think that DV is like a pub brawl; say sorry, promise you won't again, grow up. But it's not the same, as we all know.

DancingLions · 18/07/2024 14:47

The sad thing is that so many DV perpetrators don't even get a prison sentence. So it's a "result" of sorts that at least he did go to prison.

It's not taken seriously enough. There's not enough protection for women and children. I think that there's still an element of thinking that the woman has somehow put herself in that position from police, Courts etc. In the same way that rape victims also often feel they're being blamed for what's happened to them.

Our society as a whole still "blames" women for what men do. No one admits it but the thought is there.

I wonder if labour will have the balls to set tougher sentences, and really tackle domestic violence. I have high hopes they do.

Poor kids, and poor, poor woman, I don't know how they'll ever fully recover from this psychologically. Physical wounds heal, but psychological are much, much harder to treat and repair, and yet the physiological trauma of crime, never seems to be taken in to account when sentencing, only the physical, and even then it seems to be negated by a 'sorry'.

Disgraceful. 4 years was too lenient anyway . Bastard

When he was younger, Starmer opined that nobody should go to prison, not ever.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/07/2024 20:51

Just Stop Oil got 5 years. FFS.

Let's hope he's grown up at least a bit. Prison abolitionists are generally ridiculous.

I'm a theoretical abolitionist. Prison is terrible. Just as soon as someone comes up with a viable alternative, I'll be 100% on board.

This is in Ireland - just to point out to previous posters.

I was appalled by this case,

I was reading the statement from the barrister and apparently he had never been violent like this. I find it very hard to believe that he had never been abusive in some way before. Just out of the blue to commit this awful violent act? And the poor kids, it’s horrific.

Yep. It’s a worse crime to inconvenience some cars than beat a woman unconscious.

Me too, but I'm not going to hold my breath given that I've never heard a remotely sensible suggestion.
