Sorry if this has been discussed before, I have only just become aware of this person.

In 2014, he was 19, he travelled to the UK and raped a 12 year old girl several times.

He is to represent the Netherlands in the Paris Olympics in beach volleyball.

Women and girls just do not matter do they? People say a rape allegation ruins men's' lives but it's not true is it? Even after being convicted of child rape they just pick up and carry on.

There was a discussion about this rapist on the board a few weeks ago, and a link posted to the chair of the Olympics committee to protest against his inclusion in the Games. I guess any protests fell on deaf ears…

I wonder if there’ll be any direct protests outside the stadium when he’s competing?

GeorgeOrwellsTurningGrave · 18/07/2024 08:46

Deaf ears here. (Sorry, couldn't resist, I'm hearing impaired). Thanks for the reminder of this scumbag's name. Noone believed me when I told them about it IRL. Appalling that his sentence was so short and that he is allowed the privilege of representing his country. Says everything we need to know about the Olympics committee.

Sorry for the clumsy wording, @GeorgeOrwellsTurningGrave

His father was a Dean at Erasmus university - these men get away with whatever they want.
Having said that I do not think there is ANY way he would have dared play in London. The chant of "nonce nonce nonce" would have been a challenge for the TV audio.

Please don't apologise! No offense was taken at all! It's a common turn of phrase and I use it myself!

So this appalling individual is well connected. I hope there are protests.

Yeah, there was a long thread here. I live in the Netherlands, and the media coverage here (such as there was, it was barely reported) was really awful. Its a sad fact of life the people like Van de Velde exist, and its awful that he was basically allowed to get away with it. But the whole tone of the press articles was full on minimisation, pushing really old myths about CSA, focus on De Velde's suffering over the perpetrator. And also, a complete radio silence from all but one of the major children's charities both on the Olympic Committee's decision and the press (mis)reporting. It was so disappointing/dispiriting. I won't repeat my ranting. But uuurgh.

biscuitandcake · 18/07/2024 12:03

Also though, your post misses of that after travelling to the UK, he flew back to the Netherlands. Refused to come to the UK to face justice and had to be extradited. part of the extradition terms were that he would be sent back to the Netherlands to complete his sentence if found guilty. After one year in prison he was indeed sent back to NL per the agreement. At which point the Dutch authorities just released him. Because more than one year in prison for raping a 12 year old is ongezelligeid guys!

Anyone watching the volleyball now on Eurosport 2?

The paedo is currently playing and I'm sure they are turning down the volume on the crowd booing him when he has the ball.

The commentator hasn't mentioned the booing.

LostMySocks · 31/07/2024 15:27

He was booed in his first game. The Dutch team have admitted that they are protecting a rapist so he is being kept out of the Village and away from journalists.
But this is the same Olympics that is celebrating male violence against women with 2 males competing in the women's boxing who have previously been banned from boxing events due to not being eligible. So what do we expect.

MrsTerryPratchett · 31/07/2024 15:31

On another thread I was advised that he started communicating with her when she was 10. 10 years old.

sunburnandsangria · 31/07/2024 16:05

I've also been following the boxing stuff and I know about Rio 800m, the Ozzie Olympic handmaiden (Madeleine) so no, I'm not surprised he's there - didn't think they'd go to the lengths of adjusting crowd noise!

I've just done a bit of digging and hadn't realised until now that all of the sports are only filmed by the Olympics own company which they then sell on to the BBC, Eurosport etc. So although commentators are choosing to ignore it, I think the sound is controlled by the Olympic Broadcast co. as it does the filming.

And 10 🤬🤮. 12 was bad enough.
