326 seats for a majority

An exit poll is a survey carried out after people have voted in an election. It aims to predict the result by asking people who they voted for. The exit poll is not held in Northern Ireland so the 18 seats there appear in “Others”.

I literally stood in the voting booth, wondering whether to spoil my vote, but in the end had to vote tactically against the Tories. I suspect I was not alone.

FusionChefGeoff · 05/07/2024 00:33

Snap. I put a very sad cross for Labour and my previously very blue constituency is polling for Labour at the moment. I'm hoping the recent swing in public feeling / Cass / other tribunals and legal / insurance cases can do the work needed on gender reform - but the country is well and truly fucked so we need change.

IwantToRetire · 05/07/2024 00:47

At the moment they are saying turnout was 54%, which isn't actually convincing in terms of the results represents the country convincingly.

On the unrepresentative results of 2 constituencies(!) Reform have got double the number of votes as the Tories.

So far, in the results I've listened to spoilt ballots have been reported.

And strangely they all seemed to be about 100!

The proportion of votes that are going to Reform is absolutely terrifying.

Rubidium · 05/07/2024 02:51

Kirsty Blackman (SNP) is back. She who thinks she may have XY chromosomes.

Ramblingnamechanger · 05/07/2024 02:54

Annoyed that the announcement of the POW candidate in Islington South was talked over on whichever TV channel I was on, so couldn’t here the number of votes or the party. This wasn’t done so far in any of the other results. I think from memory that the spoilt votes figure was fewer in previous polls. Can anyone confirm that?

IwantToRetire · 05/07/2024 02:57

George Galloway loses his seat 4 months after winning it!

Jackie Doyle Price (Con) has lost her seat.

Double number of spoilt ballots in Starmer constiuency.

Starmer appears to have lost a large number of votes to Pro Gaza Independent.

With the low turnout, 3rd lowest in over 100 years, it seems to be more Tories staying at home than a huge turn to Labour.

Why is it terrifying? Far more concerning for women will end up being this unassailable Labour victory.

A lot of these votes are just protest votes agains the Tories.

So more relevant whether they increase in the next election.

Or like the Red Wall which turned blue at the last election, and are now reverting to red, whether the Reform votes go back to the Tories next time.

I disagree - whenever perception is of a foregone conclusion the turnout is low.

I think there’s a massive swing to the right; Reform are nearly equal in share of votes to the Conservatives.

IwantToRetire · 05/07/2024 03:21

If the turn out really is as low as 54% (lowest since 1918!) it is more worrying that there is so much disenfranchisement between voters and parties.

OP posts:
IwantToRetire · 05/07/2024 03:24

Reform are nearly equal in share of votes to the Conservatives.

But in total have less than the Tory vote last time.

As I said if at the next election Reform increase their votes and Tory lose even more that shows a trajectory, but again only in relation to total number of votes.

Kemi Badenoch is re-elected

That's good to hear. But at the rate she is going to have to be Shadow Leader and Shadow Minister of just about everything else.

But hopefully she will pursue her support for women's sex based rights!

Unfortunately Suella Braverman hasn't - surprised she didn't join Reform.

Though maybe she thinks she will become leader of the opposition.
