326 seats for a majority

An exit poll is a survey carried out after people have voted in an election. It aims to predict the result by asking people who they voted for. The exit poll is not held in Northern Ireland so the 18 seats there appear in “Others”.

I see SNP prediction is now 8. Down from the 10 it was earlier. What a loss for them but totally their own doing.

Rosie Duffield re-elected!

Joanna Cherry has lost her seat

Aww that’s a shame. If I was in that area I’d have voted for her.

CrossPurposes · 05/07/2024 05:10

Glad to see the back of John Nicolson and well done Rosie Duffield.

Rubidium · 05/07/2024 05:17

Thats grim, she was a huge asset in Parliment. Really sorry about that and she worked her guts out for women.

Shortshriftandlethal · 05/07/2024 06:28

Yes, bad news about Joanna Cherry....and Thangam lost badly 😥

Kemi retained her seat...what about Victoria Atkins? Anyone know?

In striong Labour heartlands Labour's share of the vote was down, even when they won...lots of votes going to Greens, to Reform and to Socialist Independents.

Shortshriftandlethal · 05/07/2024 06:33

Did any prominent ogres from the SNP lose their seat?

LunaNorth · 05/07/2024 06:35

I can’t believe how sad I feel this morning. Lifelong Labour supporter, until all this kicked off.

I feel like the real work is only just beginning for us. And my heart sinks at the thought of having to listen to Gobshite Rayner wanging on on the regular.

Pffffffffffft.

PriOn1 · 05/07/2024 06:38

Perhaps Joanna Cherry will stand for the Scottish Parliament. Her voice is badly needed up there.

If the turn out really is as low as 54% (lowest since 1918!) it is more worrying that there is so much disenfranchisement between voters and parties.

I'm watching the coverage, and it's just been mentioned that Labour looks to receive 1/3 of the popular vote.

FTP is an odd system, because it makes it look like Labour have a huge amount of support with the public, but that isn't the case.

Really disappointed about Joanna Cherry but so happy about Rosie.

Atkins held her seat, with Reform coming second.

@LunaNorth I feel exactly the same, there would have been a time I'd have been whopping and cheering at this result, now it's just depressing.

guinnessguzzler · 05/07/2024 07:17

Joanna Cherry has done a fantastic job speaking up for women but was not really a good constituency MP. I wrote to her on several issues, including women's rights, and rarely got even a stock response.

I agree @FusionChefGeoff and hope (possibly naively) that Labour will start to get things right in this area. Starmer is not stupid and I think he actually cares so he just needs to be encouraged to bring clarity and not bow down to the bullies.

Don't forget he's committed to making getting a GRC easier, though......

This shows how FPTP doesn't make the HoC representative.

Not that I would want it, but Reform and Tories have got 1% more votes than Labour, so not exactly a landslide for Labour.

And dont have the actual figures but Starmer's personal vote yesterday was lower than Corbyn's in past 2 GE.

It’s interesting that the Lib Dems tactics meant they managed to get a proportional number of seats.

FPTP is fine by me though. At least that way effective decisions can be taken, extreme fringes are kept at bay, and small minorities can’t hold the majority to ransom and force the government to concede to unpopular policies in order to get things passed.

And apparently Starmers vote was 50% less than last time.

In fact the opposite happens. The minority ERG dominated the Tory government that in a way that was disproportional.

And nothing got done because what the proposed and got was unworkable.

And all of this happening behind closed doors.

With a more representative vote, then it has to be out in the open who is working with you, no secret deals and unreported handshakes.

We see, and we can react to negotiaitons.

If anyone remembers the thread about Faiza Shaheen being dumped by Labour at the last moment https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5085586-starmer-stabs-anothe-black-female-labour-candidate-in-the-back it has led to Iain Duncan Smith get back.

She stood as an Independent and got nearly the same number of votes as the (new) official Labour candidate.

Combined their votes would earily have got rid of IDS - but who knows he may return as Tory Leader!
