He's a man who abuses women.

and sold himself as a good guy

I suspect he actually believed himself to be a good guy. you've got to wonder what sort of person leaves a woman injured after sex, and then suicidal, realises enough that he tries to make her sign an NDA and still virtue signals like mad on the internet.

In a sex positive worldview sex is always a good thing. Rape is not sex, it is a crime of power. There's a stark line between the two, which is consensual vs. nonconsensual.

I think it's really important to interrogate this idea - I've always felt slightly uneasy with the idea that "rape is about control not sex". Surely it can be both? Whether rape is an invading army raping women, a stranger jumping out on you from behind a bush or your husband forcing or coercing you, sexual behaviour (on the man's side) is involved. When we hear about men penetrating women in their sleep (often on MN threads) we understand that's rape. But isn't it also about the man seeing the women as his sexual possession who he should be able to use for gratification whenever he likes - yes it's about him having power over her, but it's also about him getting sex without what she wants mattering.

The history of marriage, and male-female power relationships (think slave owners and female slaves, male employers of female domestic servants, male movie or music moghuls and female would-be stars, and so on and on...) is about women being in situations where they have to provide men with sex because the men have the power - or face an alternative of losing their livelihood, home, children etc. For men as a class, sex and power have always been closely related.

Thank you @MrsWhattery, you've articulated a lot of my feelings about this issue.

The sort of person who believes himself capable of getting away with anything or is above the law, I suppose. Flying from New Zealand to Scotland right in the middle of Covid when everyone was expected to do their part in staying home was yet another of many instances in which he showed his hand.

I wonder if August will bring a statement...

Marilyn Manson went quiet for a while but he’s now preparing a comeback and has got some concert dates lined up. Maybe Gaiman will use the same strategy. Keep his head down for a while and then re-emerge later, hoping everyone will have forgotten by then.

Boy George and Johnny Depp style comebacks.

@VictorianBigot I've been quite pleasantly surprised by the fan responses across all social media. I expected some pushback, but even on tumblr and Reddit everyone is taking about him negatively. I genuinely think he won't be able to come back from this.

taylorswift1989 · 05/08/2024 08:58

I agree; I don't think he can come back and just carry on as he was.

I think if he came back with apologies and some kind of explanation (e.g. doubled down on the autism thing, or the 'bitches be crazy' thing) it might create enough division and confusion that it allows him to carry on his career, but with significantly less support and celebration.

I suspect that there will be more women thinking about coming forward and I strongly suspect Gaiman has been very, very busy trying to get in touch with all of them and beg them to stay quiet.

indigocloud · 05/08/2024 10:29

I really hope justice is served and he does not come back from this.

I can't really call myself a fan since I've not read/seen any of his works for over a decade, but I did read the Sandman series as a teen and some of his novels. Got turned off some years back after reading something on Gaiman's blog about something immoral that he was actually boasting about (completely unrelated to what's happening now). Still have a few copies of his autographed works and haven't completely decided what to do with them. On the one hand, throwing away books feels wasteful. OTOH, I don't want to put them back in circulation because even a 2nd book market is still giving him voice.

I'll probably just let them fester in the back of the shelves until I next move house and out into the bin they go.

taylorswift1989 · 05/08/2024 11:35

The pressure on him to say something seems to be growing. For someone who is chronically online, NG's silence is very conspicuous.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/08/2024 11:37

Yes, I'm sure he's itching to call women "TERFs" over the boxing controversy. Sadface.

Grin

but it shows impressive discipline, no?

so Gaiman can be extremely disciplined in some areas, but not in, say, resisting sexual impulses that are harmful and demeaning to others

CorruptedCauldron · 05/08/2024 11:54

I agree that under normal circumstances he would definitely have waded in with an opinion on the boxing controversy. It’s been so huge that even people who don’t normally comment on sex and gender issues have been talking about it. Gaiman’s silence actually speaks volumes. He knows he’s in the mire and he daren’t draw any attention to himself.

StainlessSteelMouse · 05/08/2024 11:58

I assume his lawyers and agents are telling him to stay silent for his own good.

His natural response to enturbulated dynamics would be to Tone 40 the situation. I guess if he turns up spouting weird jargon, we'll know he's been talking to his sisters.

This just popped up on my Instagram feed - the last line made me smirk, "don't be a rape-y, predatory creep?" 😏

urgh:

Around 2010 my ex told me that Neil Gaiman had asked if he knew any young women he could send to “keep him company” while he was working alone in a remote part of Scotland. He stipulated that they be “interesting but not interesting enough to fall in love with”

I just feel so sorry for any women who have been taken in by Gaiman. He has never been in good faith during his relationships with women has he? Women are objects to him - not real people

I was 'reliably' informed that a statement was imminent days ago... No sign yet...

At some level I think most men see access to young people for sex as one of the perks of fame. Predatory behaviour by famous men just doesn't flag as a big deal.

I always thought this aspect of it didn't get talked about enough (or at all) when #MeToo hit. It's not random or unrelated.
