Why I'm voting Conservative

Firstly, let me say, it pains me to admit this because I’m not a Tory. I’ve always looked upon myself as a slightly left of centre, live and let live, community based, floating voter. But the more I look at this election campaign, the more I’ve realised that, to me, this is a one issue election. Women’s rights.
Starmer has been asked countless times about women’s private spaces, on radio and on TV. Each time he’s done everything he can to avoid answering the question. In any one of these interviews, he could have made his position clear, particularly on that phone in last week where the caller Jane said she was sick of the twaddle that comes out of his mouth.
Now he’s being quoted in the Telegraph as having said that biological males should not use women’s public toilets. This is a typical move by a politician. Leave it until the last minute, so he can’t be quizzed on what he actually means and then twist and deny it afterwards. I don’t trust him.
I don’t want to vote Conservative. After Partygate and the chaos caused by that idiot Liz Truss, they need a good kicking. But they’re the only party that have consistently come down on the side of women. If Labour get in and shift the gender landscape, the changes they make could be irreparable.
In the Victorian era, they didn’t build public toilets for women. It was a way of keeping women chained to the home. This is the direction we’re heading in if we don’t stand up and put a stop to it. And I don’t want to look back on this in years to come and realise I could have voted against this shift, but I let my political views get in the way.

And you can pretend you’re not party political but you are so weirdly focused on trying to persuade people to vote Tory by spouting utterly incorrect information, that I’d be surprised if anyone believes you. I certainly don’t. You certainly have the required authoritarian streak to be one…

This is just about what is going on in your head.

My pointing out the fact that it was the Tories who stopped the trajectory of the trans agenda, is just what it is, a fact.

And I can assure that which is obvious from the many threads about who to vote for and it is clear I am not voting Tory.

Can you find one post where I have said vote Tory?

Why in you head, does telling something factual, translate into saying I support those who created the fact.

Why are you so upset that the Tories might have done one thing right in the midst of all they did wrong.

It is a fact that without the Tories and specifically KB we would probably have self id, and no protection for women only services.

And the likelihood is that once Labour is in power this will happen any way.

It may turn out that the last 5 years will be the highest point of women's sex based rights being a possible part of Government policy.

You don't have to vote at all. Given other Tory policies I imagine the net gain to women if they get in again will be zero, if not in the minuses.

So you should not vote for them if you care about women. Add to that the impacts on all vulnerable groups .

Spoil your vote.

You certainly shouldn't vote for Labour if you care about women. They believe that men can grow.their own cervix and tthat a percentage of women have penises and that radical medication and surgery are helpful to children.
.Should we really let people.who believe such things into power?

TempestTost · 04/07/2024 02:11

I don't quite understand the argument that the Tories should have acted on this sooner.

Maybe - I'd say they were at about the same place as the public mood, which doesn't show much insight.

But the real issue is - Labour still haven't moved on.

There's no ideal choice eve on this on this issue alone. It's all relative to the other, actual choices.

I also don't think it's really useful to talk about whether a political party "cares" It's not a person, it has no feelings.

But there are absolutely Tory MPs that do care about women's rights. The left likes to claim caring, and feminism, among other things, for themselves, but it's just not true.

SpidersAreShitheads · 04/07/2024 04:05

I have been dithering over who to vote for in the morning. I came here to see if anyone else left-leaning is voting Tory.

My problem is that Labour can’t win in my constituency. Our candidate isn’t local, isn’t engaged and clearly doesn’t give much of a shit. Labour is WAY off the lead, not a hope in hell of being elected here.

Ours has been a safe Tory seat for a very long time but with the change in boundaries it’s now neck and neck between Tory and LibDem.

The incumbent Tory is ok. Well-informed on local issues. We obvs don’t agree on a lot as he’s a Tory and I’m left-leaning but he’s not completely awful.

I cannot vote for LibDem. They are so firmly on the TWAW bandwagon it’s ridiculous, and they show no signs of altering their stance. It’s a bit of a shame as I like Ed Davey and LibDems otherwise but this is a complete showstopper for me. I want them to have as few seats as possible because I don’t want them to have any influence over women’s rights. Sorry Ed.

Also the local LibDem candidate seems like a complete tool. He refused to respond to my comment re women’s rights, and he doesn’t have any specifics when asked about local issues.

No independents running here.

So, either I throw my vote away on Labour, or I spoil my vote…….or I do the unthinkable and vote Conservative.

I absolutely do not want another Tory government. I wouldn’t vote Tory if I thought they could actually win.

But as I can’t vote Labour in here, maybe it would be useful for the Conservatives to hold onto a few seats? I still have concerns over Labour’s policies on women so I’m thinking that having decent opposition that believes in women’s identity might be beneficial?? Which means a Tory vote for me.

Cant believe I’m even considering this but it’s a tactical vote to keep the LibDems out….

I could be you except we have a Green possibly taking the safe Tory seat - although I think much of this is spin and that it will stay Tory. Labour are nowehere.
I am dithering although we do have an SDP candidate so I may go with him. i cannot vote Green, Labour, Lib Deb as they are up to their eyes in id pol and I don't want to vote Tory.
What a mess the Left have left us in when this should have been an easy choice.

Perzival · 04/07/2024 08:06

I'll be voting Tory too. I shouldn't be and tbh don't want to. I have a severely disabled child who I'm a carer for and live in one of the poorest North West towns. I want to vote Labour but I just can't bring myself to do it because of women's rights.

In addition we've had a Labour council for a very long time and they not prioritise services etc which have no consequence to me.

Grammarnut · 04/07/2024 08:23

Soundsofjoy · 02/07/2024 15:28

I’m sorry but I could never in a million years bring myself to vote conservative after this complete shit show. I get your point but I would go with the Lib Dems, the Green Party, anyone but this bunch of clowns.

The LibDems are as trans ally as Labour. Ditto Greens, some of whose candidates have praised Oct 7th as resistance to white/colonial oppression. Reform is full of right-wing nutjobs and led by a man who thinks the NHS should be privatised like the US health industry. Cannot vote for any of those today. Thinking of voting for the independent - he won't get in but I will have avoided voting Labour (not sure of his opinions on trans but given his ethnicity and probable religion he is likely not very friendly towards women, but does know what one is).

Me. I'm lucky(!) that the particular circumstances of my constituency means labour are very, very unlikely to get in. We're likely to go from blue to yellow. My tiny vote will make very no difference to anyone except me. It's hardly up there with the sacrifice of the first born, but I feel it's on that spectrum.

I'm not voting 'of course a woman can have a penis' LD.

I do wish the labour candidate had replied to me. It would be nice to know they were fielding someone sane. No hoper or not, I might have voted for that.

minsmum · 04/07/2024 10:11

I still haven't made up my mind not that it Will make a difference. My constituency is down as a 99% Labour win

We don’t have SDP here unfortunately. Our selection is Cons, Labour, LibDem, Green, Reform, or the Christian Alliance.

I briefly considered the latter as they know what a woman is but I read their manifesto and their views on gay rights etc are awful so I’m not supporting that.

I suspect LibDems are going to take this seat. I think I’m going to go with Tory to try and prevent it but really, what a stinking choice….I’m not feeling great about it.

This is why the voting system needs to be radically reformed. Voting Labour is pointless here. I just moved last year - previously I was in a very very safe Tory seat. I still voted (mainly Labour with some other left wing party variations over the years) but I knew my vote would never mean anything. And that Tory was a right smug twat, making it doubly annoying.

Ha! You’re not in my constituency are you?! It’s the same here.

I am also (probably) going to vote Tory as a tactical measure. Not that it will make much difference- I suspect the LibDems will still take the seat.

In theory that is right but it would require a seismic shift around here to change. I can't see that happening no one had even bothered sending leaflets for any other party

…”But as progressive and ground-breaking as our achievements were then, progress never stands still, and we can never take it for granted. We must keep pushing, keep fighting, keep working together, for a fairer society where LGBT+ people aren’t just safe – but celebrated, welcome, and included.”…

Extract from KS open letter… he has every intention of disregarding women’s rights in favour of Trans rights.

I agree.

The Tories aren't going to win, so it's not as though you voting for them will keep them in Government.

Just think of it as you doing your bit to help provide a strong enough opposition so that Labour are held to account, as much as can be, on women's rights.

Can you imagine the situation with the worst-case scenario of such a massive Labour super majority?

Aside from anything, I don't think it's good when any party has such huge power.

DarlingCoffee · 04/07/2024 10:44

@SpidersAreShitheads @Namechange98242 I think I’m going to do the same and I feel sick about this. In my area it’s between the blue and the yellow. I am concerned Labour will have a super majority in this election and we need representatives who will stand up for women’s rights. I am just in shock at the views of Labour, LD and the Greens on this subject and the direction things could go if they get in power.

it’s totally Labour here, Tory are second but with a teeny, tiny fraction of the vote and then everyone else loses their deposit.

I’ve had three comms from Labour (no doubt I will be on their database as a guaranteed Labour voter) one leaflet each from all the other candidates that came together in a pile, presumably delivered by a paid leafletter (they usually bring estate agents ads and pizza menus).

The Worker’s Party candidate had a car with a speaker on top playing a prerecorded message (very retro).

Weirdly there are no garden pole signs for any candidate at all - usually quite a few Labour ones (I’ve even hosted one in the past) and an occasional Lib Dem one on display.

I’m just off to vote Tory for the first time in my life. My hope is that Labour win the election (because we do need a change) but not with the predicted “super majority” and that there are a few decent GCs in opposition seats. Where I live Labour don’t stand a chance so I’ve got the choice of an openly GC female Tory or an openly TRA male LD and It’s obvious to me who will be better in opposition.

I have voted conservative in the hopes our MP holds onto his seat. I do think the country needs a change but I also think they need a strong opposition and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried about women’s right. Especially as I have a daughter and potentially another one on the way. Just got to hope that whatever the election outcome, positive changes are made for the country. 🤞🏻

SolitaryBee · 04/07/2024 11:46

I will vote conservative. Not because I am lazy, stupid or deluded as has been repeatedly suggested. Nor because I am worried about who I sit next to in a toilet cubicle. Which is a classic MRA/TRA response used to ridicule, minimise and dismiss women’s genuine concerns about a pernicious, anti scientific ideology. It is not about toilets. It never has been. It is about safeguarding vulnerable women and children. Labour have yet to show they understand this. At least some of the conservatives have listened and responded to feedback from women and shown they can change direction.
