Why I'm voting Conservative

Firstly, let me say, it pains me to admit this because I’m not a Tory. I’ve always looked upon myself as a slightly left of centre, live and let live, community based, floating voter. But the more I look at this election campaign, the more I’ve realised that, to me, this is a one issue election. Women’s rights.
Starmer has been asked countless times about women’s private spaces, on radio and on TV. Each time he’s done everything he can to avoid answering the question. In any one of these interviews, he could have made his position clear, particularly on that phone in last week where the caller Jane said she was sick of the twaddle that comes out of his mouth.
Now he’s being quoted in the Telegraph as having said that biological males should not use women’s public toilets. This is a typical move by a politician. Leave it until the last minute, so he can’t be quizzed on what he actually means and then twist and deny it afterwards. I don’t trust him.
I don’t want to vote Conservative. After Partygate and the chaos caused by that idiot Liz Truss, they need a good kicking. But they’re the only party that have consistently come down on the side of women. If Labour get in and shift the gender landscape, the changes they make could be irreparable.
In the Victorian era, they didn’t build public toilets for women. It was a way of keeping women chained to the home. This is the direction we’re heading in if we don’t stand up and put a stop to it. And I don’t want to look back on this in years to come and realise I could have voted against this shift, but I let my political views get in the way.

I admit to only having skim-read this thread but it's not surprising to see the usual scolding going on. It's absolutely the attitude of "We on the Left know what is best for you because we are morally superior and have the correct views" that makes me loathe so much of Left wing politics.

You would think that people would have learnt from the whole Brexit fiasco that calling people names and deliberately misinterpreting their position does nothing to change minds. And when you kid yourself into thinking that the only reason someone is voting in a particular way is because they are stupid or hateful you close your mind to the actual reasons that people vote the way they do.

True. I try very hard to understand why some voters wanted to remain in the undemocratic and not particularly friendly to working/ordinary people EU.

I am a life long tory voter and past member. I voted Labour today because the current Conservative party has made me ashamed. I am shocked that anyone would want to vote for them and particularly over the whole trans/womens issue. The party has got progressively worse since May left and I am disgusted at how much they have lied and partied whilst little people suffer.

No, writing on the ballot paper does not invalidate the vote. The ballot will be put in the spoiled ballots pile but each of these is viewed and it will be clearly seen that a valid vote has also been made - the comment will be read out to make sure everyone agrees it does not invalidate the vote.

I shall remember that for next time, thank you!

Sure thing.

It doesn't, as long as the ballot paper shows a clear preference they will get the vote.

Thanks to you saying this I composed different comments for each Party, so it wouldn't look like something accidental.

But because far more than usual, a large number of people turned up to vote late (usually its quiet and can get in and out quickly) there was actually a queue for the voting booths.

So me standing there mulling over my statements had to be cut short as I was asked how much longer I was going to be.

But got in Respect My Sex.

That's awful that you were chivvied along - presumably by an official not a random voter?

I mean you surely weren't THAT long.

You can't see why anyone would vote for them 'particularly over the women/trans issue'.

Why is that? Are women's rights so trivial to you?

If you read the thread, maybe you'll see why so many of us voted for them. For precisely this reason.

Edited for clarity.

The officials are not allowed to chivvy you - they must not interfere with voters in any way. Complain.
If it was another voter, what were they doing near someone actually voting? That also is illegal. Complain.
If there was a queue the duty of the officials is to make sure anyone waiting to vote is inside the polling station before it closes. If you are in the polling station you can vote even if it is past closing time. This issue caused a huge row in the 2019 election when people were not allowed to vote though they were in the polling station, or had been waiting sometime outside and were not let in - somewhere in London, I think.

Why would I vote for a party the leader of which thinks .01% of women have a penis? What else does he believe that makes no sense?

They might have been wrong footed by the fact that she seemed to be writing an essay on the ballot paper, rather than putting a cross like most people!

Possibly. But if she is that's her constitutional right, and they must not interfere. Mind, an essay is unnecessary. Just 'none of the above because they think some women have penises - and some of them support Hamas' would have done! - and covers everyone except the Tories (so I suppose a p.s. 'and destroyed the NHS to the best of their ability' might be needed).

No another voter.

Only 5 minutes to spare, and all these people turned up.

I am so used to being the only one there at that time with the officials looking at me like obviously thinking for heaven's sake she's had all day.

And yes I was slow. I was a bit like the earnest child at the back of the class, licking my pencil thinking what shall I write here.

Was going to put "Sex Pest" beside Galloway's party but started thinking you would have to be quite old to know that and then I thought ... at which point this young person was looking at me not quite stamping their feet but clearly thinking this dinasour is going to stop me getting my vote in.

I achieved 50% of my comments. Grin

And as expected Labour won.
