Why I'm voting Conservative

Firstly, let me say, it pains me to admit this because I’m not a Tory. I’ve always looked upon myself as a slightly left of centre, live and let live, community based, floating voter. But the more I look at this election campaign, the more I’ve realised that, to me, this is a one issue election. Women’s rights.
Starmer has been asked countless times about women’s private spaces, on radio and on TV. Each time he’s done everything he can to avoid answering the question. In any one of these interviews, he could have made his position clear, particularly on that phone in last week where the caller Jane said she was sick of the twaddle that comes out of his mouth.
Now he’s being quoted in the Telegraph as having said that biological males should not use women’s public toilets. This is a typical move by a politician. Leave it until the last minute, so he can’t be quizzed on what he actually means and then twist and deny it afterwards. I don’t trust him.
I don’t want to vote Conservative. After Partygate and the chaos caused by that idiot Liz Truss, they need a good kicking. But they’re the only party that have consistently come down on the side of women. If Labour get in and shift the gender landscape, the changes they make could be irreparable.
In the Victorian era, they didn’t build public toilets for women. It was a way of keeping women chained to the home. This is the direction we’re heading in if we don’t stand up and put a stop to it. And I don’t want to look back on this in years to come and realise I could have voted against this shift, but I let my political views get in the way.

God what a shit show. I can’t vote Tory. They have broken the country and hate women. They could have fixed this but chose not to. At least we have had time to build up some defence.

but it has shocked me how labour has just not listened to women again and again and again.

Build your whole future on a this? Vote for misogynistic racists who hate anyone who is poor/ old/ disabled?

Good grief.

Well the LP is packed with misogynists and has a terrible track history with racism...

Are you aware of how many tory mps have been accused of sex crimes, voted down policies that would help women or how women have suffered under a Tory government?
I don’t know who I’m going to vote for, but to say you are voting tories because they are for women is naive at best, and complete stupidity at worst.

Edited

The sex criminals seem pretty evenly split across all the main parties, no?

edited to add a fairly recent Labour example but there are multiple examples amongst MPs and Cllrs for all parties:

It is a mess and I know many people who feel disenfranchised and are still wondering who to vote for.

I have spoiled my ballot before now. Also voted Green in the past and for Labour when TB was in charge. People can do with their vote exactly as they please and should do so.

I never said they couldn't do as they please.
You can put Hello Kitty stickers on it if you want.
Still a waste of time in my opinion.

lcakethereforeIam · 02/07/2024 19:51

The tory's are toast. We're going to wake up on Friday to a Labour government with Starmer as our new PM. Voting tory may only mitigate that a little and, possibly, temper Labour arrogance. Which is never a good thing in a ruling party.

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/07/2024 19:52

I'm voting Labour. The election isn't about one issue. My underlying impulse was not to vote Labour because of their prevarication and evasiveness on this issue.

However, I was persuaded by a RL friend of mine who is at the absolute grass roots of the gender critical movement, and has been heavily involved long before I was, not to throw away my vote.

Starmer is trying not to alieanate a huge number of voters who still don't understand the critical conflict of inflict between women's rights and invasive trans rights from men.

Trans people need rights, as do we all. They just don't need the right to compromise women. A huge percentage of the voting public doesn't understand the difference.

I think whoever is in power, there is still a great deal of work to do, but I'm confident we'll get there.

Meanwhile, the Tories can fuck off.

The 5 year wait for rape cases, under the Tory government, and no prison spaces for convicted rapists, yeah sure they're on the side of women. Also, as a woman, I need healthcare, and the NHS has been trashing it for the last 14 years. Basing your vote on a single issue is just lazy and irresponsible. 10% of the MPs were under investigation for sexual misconduct or rape. It's a joke to think they prioritise women!

I don’t believe I am either lazy or irresponsible. I have been emailing candidates about this subject since 2018 when we still had MEPs. I have joined a local women’s rights group. Written to and withdrawn my custom from businesses who have opted for mixed sex facilities. Contributed to the funding appeals of numerous legal challenges. I am proud of what UK women have achieved so far in very adverse circumstances.

l have given this a great deal of thought. I believe a civilised society cares for all its vulnerable and weakened members and that includes women in jail. I don’t think there is anything civilised about ignoring women’s voices. I have lived under the left of centre SNP government in Scotland for the last 17 years. If you want to see how badly a left wing, avowedly progressive government can fail its people take a look at Scotland.

A labour victory is not going to automatically fix everything that is wrong in the Uk. It will however make things materially worse for women by, as Keir has promised, making it easier for males to transition. We will inevitably get predatory males abusing this, it has happened time and time again.

IwantToRetire · 02/07/2024 19:53

And yet under the last Labour government we had Children's Centres, funding for local women's refuges and safe houses, efficient gynae services and less child poverty.

I am not tory supporter but this isn't evidence of what a future Labour Government would do.

Since then we have had Brexit, Covid and Ukraine.

All of these have severly impacted on the UK's finances and economic future. And whilst the Tories haven't handled this well, there is no evidence Labour would have done any better.

Most cuts to women's services are done by local councils.

And when they dont have enough money, that is when you find out the Labour whether localy or nationally do not value women. Most cuts to women's services happened at a local level, many by local Labour councils who do not prioritise women.

As with everything else women are expected to wait in line.

This part of the stupidity in this country, not just the politicians but the media who think politics is a realilty show, and us the voters who act like spoilt children thinking because they want something they can have it.

Reality check is that the UK is living well beyond its means (for whatever reason) and no politicians is prepared to say this. Look at what happened to Theresa May when she tried to find a solution to the lack of care. Not saying her solution was right, but nobody came up with a better plan. Just like housing. Everyone says there should be more, but it never happens.

Has anyone seen a party manifesto that isn't just pie in the sky - not forgetting that most analysists say that in terms of expenditure there is little difference between tory and labour.

Why is he so invested in doing this? And I completely disagree that this is a 'huge number'.

Iseeyoupekingduck · 02/07/2024 19:54

So event though the whole country has been screwed, people are having to sit on the floor in a&e, mental health is in crisis and there's no staff or beds, teaching is in crisis because they don't have the funding or teachers, people can't get a dentist, the price of utility bills is daft, the price of food is stupid, and so much more but yet you will vote for that shower of shit to ruin the country even more because you have a bee in your bloody bonnet, country has gone mad!!!

jomartin281271 · 02/07/2024 15:30

BlownItJellyHead The trans madness has happened all over the western world and I'm just glad someone is starting to stand up to it.

I wonder why they decided to address it in the few weeks leading up to the election?

Why have they done nothing in the 14 years they’ve been in power?

Winederlust · 02/07/2024 19:58

Corinthiana · 02/07/2024 19:25

Well that's total waste of time.

For all Kemi Badenoch has done in recent times, she's not the Tory party, she's just one woman. She's only being listened to now because they've realised this issue is a vote winner.

I don't blame people for not trusting Starmer but I do blame people for trusting anything that comes out of Sunak's mouth. Or most of the Tories tbh.

I personally think the only option is to spoil your vote. If you've clearly intentionally spoiled it they have to count it and if enough of us did so they may take notice.

It's 100% not a waste of time

But why do you think labour can make it all better? Why do you think the Tories don’t equally care about those things? We have all those problems and more in Scotland with a worse performing education system and NHS under the left wing Sturgeon who had arguably a bigger budget to play with per person under the Barnett formula.

No one thinks Labour will 'make it all better'. It's taken 14 years of asset stripping to get to where we are. While the economy is now dead (in part due to Brexit).

But why on earth would you want the asset stripping to continue?

LifeofBrienne · 02/07/2024 20:03

The Tory Party is no friend to any woman who is disabled. Or has children with SEN. Or gets attacked and would like the case to go to trial within a reasonable period, rather than waiting for two years because of court backlogs. Or needs timely medical treatment. Or is working but has to rely on food banks. Or is a young woman who’s grown up in care and ends up homeless because of lack of support.
Austerity has disproportionately fucked women over and the Tories should own it.

It's going to take Labour a long time to fix all the shit the Tories have left behind!

IwantToRetire · 02/07/2024 20:08

It's going to take Labour a long time to fix all the shit the Tories have left behind!

And its taking us all a long time, with terrible damage to the NHS and Education because through PPP Labour has left these services paying off more in interest on loans than they can afford. Not unlike many developing countries who can never get the growth they need because they are paying the interest on loans from so called "first" world countries.

climbthathill129 · 02/07/2024 20:08

@WishIMite because labour will make everything worse. Conservatives will be on the right track if they focus on spending & funding better.

Really???? They have had 14 years and done what???? Absolutely everything is in decline!!

RickyBobbysKFC · 02/07/2024 20:12

I will be voting for Conservative too. I live in Wales and the only party who could have any influence over this issue here is Conservative.
David TC Davies has been absolutely fantastic on this issue since 2017.

The Tories pushed for the Cass review and consulted on women’s health not so long ago.

I have other reasons to vote for them too - mainly that Labour have been an absolute shower of shyte in Wales. I used to be a Labour voter, but I don’t recognise them anymore.

SlothOnARope · 02/07/2024 20:14

jomartin281271 · 02/07/2024 15:32

The Lib Dems and the Greens are even worse than Labour when it comes to this issue.

Oh ffs.

I'm voting Green.

My candidate, in all the election materials dealings I've had with her, has never once mentioned gender. Not once. It is ALL about fair pay, the environment, decent housing, promoting local interests, the not insignificant matter of IMMEDIATE ceasefire in the Middle East, and getting rid of the Labour-led corruption and stagnation that has blighted my community for decades.

Not a single word has been spent on inter-gender feuding. Nor from the LibDems come to think of it. The greens and yellows are not suddenly going to grab power and start forcing all women to embrace crazy unwanted ideologies.

And even if they did, can you not tell them to STFU consistently and repeatedly? I certainly will.

This election is about breaking down the established corrupted power systems so they never again can return.

UpThePankhurst · 02/07/2024 20:15

This is the Greens who expelled all the women from the Green Party who stood up for women's rights?

Rockmumontherun · 02/07/2024 20:19

Under the conservatives violence against women has increased
Maternity care has gone to sh*t
Research into women's illnesses remains dramatically underfunded
House prices have risen that much that women no longer gave a choice about working full time or taking time off to bring up their children.
I don't think the torys have done that much for women during their time in power 🤔.
