My labour candidate just knocked

Eurgh, my labour candidate just knocked the door so we had a chat. I said I have an issue which is important to me but that unfortunately the tories seem to have a stronger stance on.

I asked her views on same same spaces, lesbian women and gay men able to choose to socialise in places with only other lesbian women or gay men etc.

I got a bit of an talk about single sex sports, changing rooms and school toilets but then ‘I believe some women are born women and others can become women with a GRC, it’s the party policy’. We talked a bit more, I said I disagreed and that you can not change your DNA or gonads with surgery, hormones, lifestyle or a GRC.

She just smiled in an agree to disagree kind of way. It’s so annoying, she’s a mother of 3 and an ex-teacher - she should know the science but is clearly towing the party line.

Lots of women seem only too happy to throw us under the bus. What can you do? Except you don't have to enable them I guess.

HermioneWeasley · 30/06/2024 14:42

Well they can’t say it never comes up on the doorstep.

are you going to vote for her?

Beelavinder · 30/06/2024 14:42

It's rather sad really.
Basic science being ignored and women placed at risk
Society seems to have forgotten that biologically we are weaker and more vulnerable. Take away good contraception and most of us may find ourselves living a very difficult and different life.

Women had to fight to even vote. So I will not vote to endanger women
I can't vote labour for this reason. Also not convinced anything they are coming out with can actually improve anything.

No I'm not a Tory. I'm still considering options!

I know she's gone but maybe you could email her and just say - look, you don't have to get back to me straight away, but how does this make sense? Why is one male a woman and another male not a woman? How can it be that I'm a woman because I'm female, but Thomasina is a woman because ze has a certificate?

It's not even to get a reply from her. It's just to get her thinking about it (if that's at all possible).

I would have had to disagree strongly with the bit about 'some men can become women' if they have a GRC.
This is merely a legal fiction and has no bearing on anyone's actual sex, it can be disregarded to keep transwomen i.e. men out of specified female spaces, occupations etc if it is a proportionate response to a legitimate aim.
That aim being to preserve single sex spaces for women to preserve their privacy, decency and safety.

Shortshriftandlethal · 30/06/2024 15:32

Which brings us back to "What is a woman"?

If you are a woman because of your biology, and he is a woman because of a certificate and dysphoric feelz - then what is it that makes them both a woman?

Even saying there are two types of women doesn't cut it.....because what do you mean by a woman in the first place?

Shortshriftandlethal · 30/06/2024 15:34

I recall being told by a TRA/gay man that there was " No such thing as a woman".

If that is the case, what is it that men are 'transitioining' to?

I'd also add that you don't want a stock answer, you want one in her own words that shows her own reasoning on this. You're not being her enemy here - you're worried about your rights as a woman which means you're worried about her rights too.
