Trigger Warning: Horrified by what happened to Lara Logan in Egypt *title edited by MNHQ*

This happened in 2011, but I have only just seen a video about it. It has utterly horrified me. Lara Logan was reporting on protests in Egypt, when the camera broke. Her colleague, who spoke the local language realised very quickly that she was in trouble, as he heard the crowds of men starting to talk about attacking Lara. He desperately tried to get her away from the mob, but she was dragged in to the crowd, and up to 200 men ripped all her clothes off, and then raped her and beat her with flagpoles. They then tried to rip her arms and legs off, and tried to rip her scalp off. She was eventually rescued, almost dead, by a crown of women and soldiers. These were muslim men.

I find it terrifying, that a group of men would all want to be so violent towards a woman, and not one thought that what they were doing, was wrong/should be stopped.

These are men who insist that women are covered at all times, who insist in no sex before marriage, and it makes me wonder whether they have deprived themselves of being around women, and then when they see one, they just lose all control. As far as I know, nothing like this has happened in the West, where women and sex are (for want of a better phrase) freely available.

Apparently, a high percentage of Egyptian men freely admit that they have sexually assaulted women, which seems at odds with men insisting that women are covered and not allowed sexual freedom.

The whole thing is just awful. That poor lady.

I mean, why?? I just cannot get my head around it.

It’s making me think of rape in war. Seemingly normal men who go off to war and then rape women. Wtf?

Sexist, double standard society. Men want a virgin young girl who will be submissive, but a man doen't need to be a virgin, religious rules only apply to oppress women. The men will always find a loophole to do whatever they desire. But at the same time they use sex workers, harass any woman they see outside. I have personally witnessed a group of girls all wearing burka being groped, no one would say anything to the men. It's like something expected. The men themselves use the excuse of "she deserves it if she is dressed that way" but they are silent when asked why women in burka receive the same treatment.

You will witness this double standard in day to day life, for example weddings in concervative villages. The men and women's section is separated. The men will always have a female dancer or two who have very little clothes on, all their wives are covered up.

Did you see those studies conducted with men in the West about whether or not they’d commit a sexual assault against a woman or child if they were guaranteed not to get caught? The majority said that they would.

This is about men as a group rather than religion or sex. They would carry out all kinds of depraved acts like this if they could get away with it.

Exactly. Yes, those surveys are terrifying. The truth is terrifying. They want us to live in fear of it, which means we do not and never will have freedom. It's terrorism.

Well, tbf, western world also has it double standards with this.
I.e men going to strip clubs, some even use prostitutes.
And specially the strippers are something women are supposed to be okey with.
And in western world many women objectify themselves and dress for the male gaze, meanwhile men are in comfortable clothes, most times only skin you see from men is face and hands.

It’s all misogyny, just different way.

I would feel much safer walking past a Mosque on a Friday afternoon than my local Weatherspoons

slidingdoorsmoments · 30/06/2024 18:25

I’m very much a “just get on with it” person. I was attacked abroad. Not sexually. But I was struck and had a gun to my head. I got over it no problem. My ex also assaulted me twice. No ptsd from that. But I honestly don’t think I’d ever be able to get over this. It’s just SO extreme. I can’t stop thinking about this poor lady.

4 women and two children killed on one day in Spain this week.

I can believe that but personally I worked next to a mosque in Glasgow(Pollokshields)for the best part of a decade and the sexual harassment and intimidation that I experienced almost every day from men coming and going from the mosque was disgusting. And yes I met many lovely friendly respectful Muslim men too(Mainly the shopkeepers) but I have never experienced harassment on that level since.

Strangely Wetherspoons is one of the safest places I go. I’d have no problem asking staff for help, using their toilets etc. I use them a lot in places where I wouldn’t risk a standard bar/pub.

@slidingdoorsmoments . Edited as responding to wrong poster. In 2011 men raped Lara, not Islam. A cynical person might feel this is an interestingly timed post. Are you planning to vote Reform?

Wow. I have read some crazy stuff on MN but you are taking top prize. Desperate no?

My 12 year old has never been told she has "nice tits" by a man standing outside a mosque

mumofblu · 30/06/2024 18:48

@Hoppinggreen wait till shes older and goes to a chip shop , curry house , taxi and gets invited to drink in the back of the shop or asked for a bj instead of paying fare and oh yeah do you want to be my girlfriend I'll treat you nice ( while not telling my wife who's at home with the children )

Knitgoodwoman · 30/06/2024 18:49

Horrific, I wasn’t aware of this.

Yes, unfortunately that's going to be the fate of far too many 12 year old girls, abused by men - like the local pillar of the community who abused me when I was 12.

The form of the abuse will vary, the ethnicity of the abuser will vary, the nationality of the abuser will vary, the location of the abuse - in the neighbour's house, in my case, or outside a mosque, inside a Catholic Church, behind Westminster Abbey... will vary, but the biological sex of the abuser will not.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 30/06/2024 18:59

I went to Egypt in 2001, it was awful. The men just grab at you, my friend and I were pulled into shops in Cairo. In luxor we were held hostage by a group of men and I had to punch a kid in the face to escape. The staff in the hotel kept trying to get us to go to their parties.

Would never go back. Which is a shame as ancient Egyptian history is a passion of mine.

ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat · 30/06/2024 19:03

How weird as well, that they would prefer to have sex together with an unattractive woman, more than they would want sex on their own with a "hot" woman.

What is wrong with you?

She is almost 20 and although we live in a very multicultural area none of those things has happened, she has got some lovely Muslim friends though.
I also grew up in an area with a lot of Muslims and I managed to avoid all of those things too.
Its almost as if some people on this thread want to paint ALL Muslim men in the same way, which would be Islamaphobia

@Hoppinggreen but if you say it's a male issue and male violence that is the problem and you suddenly get NAMALT.Grin

Actually I agree, both genders should dress modestly by their country standards. Of course stay cool in summer but not everything has to be on display. I understand that we should be able to choose what we wear, but in reality, I do not like seeing women too minusculy dressed, it is not a feminist issue for me.

I am literally an Islamophobe. I fear fundamentalist Islam. I am also a Christophobe. I fear fundamentalist Christianity. I fear deeply misogynistic, authoritarian religion in general. That is nothing to be ashamed of. Am I also, in general, afraid of men who follow such religions? You bet your ass I am.
Let's not do a #notallmuslimmen on each other. We know it isn't all men, all Muslim men, or whatever. It is, however, a fuck of a lot of them. Men are the same the world over, but religion is one of the things that give them an excuse to act on their hatred and power lust. All things which are designed to give them that license should be feared and loathed. All belief systems should be able to be critiqued without accusations of bigotry.

People always use not ALL as their counter argument. Of course it is not all, it is just prevalent.

it is like saying ALL the British guys on a beach are tattooed. It is not all, it’s just prevalent or at least there will be more than just a few.

Life2Short4Nonsense · 30/06/2024 19:36

I echo what other posters have already said. Men from every country, every culture, every ethnicity and nearly all ages can (and many will) do this. Raping and murdering women happens all over the world, everyday.

I don't know if any of you have ever seen the film Liberated, but it shows that same attitude towards women over and over again:

coldcallerbaiter · 30/06/2024 19:38

Have you seen the murders and assaults in Mexico City documentaries. It happens everywhere but some places or people just are worse. Sometimes it is the circumstances or situation, like soldiers in a war.

IsadoraBathrobe · 30/06/2024 19:43

NAMALT but TMMALT (too many men are like that). Just horrific.
