Trigger Warning: Horrified by what happened to Lara Logan in Egypt *title edited by MNHQ*

This happened in 2011, but I have only just seen a video about it. It has utterly horrified me. Lara Logan was reporting on protests in Egypt, when the camera broke. Her colleague, who spoke the local language realised very quickly that she was in trouble, as he heard the crowds of men starting to talk about attacking Lara. He desperately tried to get her away from the mob, but she was dragged in to the crowd, and up to 200 men ripped all her clothes off, and then raped her and beat her with flagpoles. They then tried to rip her arms and legs off, and tried to rip her scalp off. She was eventually rescued, almost dead, by a crown of women and soldiers. These were muslim men.

I find it terrifying, that a group of men would all want to be so violent towards a woman, and not one thought that what they were doing, was wrong/should be stopped.

These are men who insist that women are covered at all times, who insist in no sex before marriage, and it makes me wonder whether they have deprived themselves of being around women, and then when they see one, they just lose all control. As far as I know, nothing like this has happened in the West, where women and sex are (for want of a better phrase) freely available.

Apparently, a high percentage of Egyptian men freely admit that they have sexually assaulted women, which seems at odds with men insisting that women are covered and not allowed sexual freedom.

The whole thing is just awful. That poor lady.

I know quite a few Muslims, one way or another. My parents had close Muslim friends when I was a child: one of the most touching condolence letters when DM died came from the wife of the couple.

I know of religious Muslim parents who, in a largely Muslim country, keep their DC out of the state system because they don't want them brainwashed with the extreme variant.

It's the extreme variant that's the issue. But it is widespread and dangerous for women. It scares me, TBH.

Edited for clarity.

biscuitandcake · 30/06/2024 12:16

I mean, if these men actually want more sex, why don't they allow their women all of the freedoms that we have, and then they would have much more access to women and sex.

The point is, men can't be expected to control themselves (in that argument). Therefore the onus is put on women to cover up so that they don't tempt the men. If the women aren't covered up/behaving properly then it isn't the men's fault. And this affects behaviour - if you tell someone they can't be expected not to steal, it won't be their fault if they steal, they are more likely to steal. Its giving them an external locus of control not an internal one.
Christian philosophers like Augustine of Hippo, wrote beautifully about temptation, and how human's give themselves permission to sin, or allow others to lead them astray when they know its wrong. But even he then basically says that men's inability to control their sexual desires means the responsibility has to be on women.

Its a surprisingly consistent theme and its present in most religions though its definitely stronger in some cultures than others. But generally people (men included) are happier if they feel they are in control of their actions then if everything is externalised. Plus, there's less rape that way so women are happier too.

If you look at photo's of women in the 1970's in Muslim countries, they are wearing exactly the same clothes that we were wearing in the West. It must have been terrifying, to have been there in 1979, when they were all suddenly made to wear the hijab. Can you even imagine?

Men are herd animals just like dogs!

It takes a brave man to stand up against the crowd.

Have you ever listened unobtrusively to a group of boys when they think they are out of earshot of adults. As the sister to 3 younger brothers, it's truly shocking!

This is why so many women chose the bear.

This. Honestly, I'm thinking that this should be a first date type of question, and if the man doesn't show any empathy towards why a woman would pick a bear, that should be a massive red flag.

Bloody hell, what is WRONG with some men? 5 men and no one thought this was wrong. How weird as well, that they would prefer to have sex together with an unattractive woman, more than they would want sex on their own with a "hot" woman. What's that about? I honestly don't get it. And one was a Police Officer!

Sorry, what?

slidingdoorsmoments · 30/06/2024 12:28

ActivePeony · 30/06/2024 12:25

Read the article. That's what they said in their Whatsapp messages. That it would be better to have 5 on 1 sex with a fat woman. Better than just 1 on 1 with a hot chick. So they actually all get off on the gang element, and watching each other having sex. Super weird.

@biscuitandcake That's why I'm basically an atheist, although there are obviously transmisogyny atheists too.

I just don't understand the appeal of most major religions for women who care about their rights. The bible starts with a story of a woman being created out of man, and for the purpose of keeping him company and giving him a wife. Straight away, that negates woman's autonomy as fully separate human beings in their own right, not just versions of men.

Many religions basically want to blame women for absolutely everything. They're the snakes that lead good men astray, but who also must be more virtuous?? This is to the point where women are blamed of their own as abuse or even murder, because clearly if there's a woman involved, the must automatically be to blame somehow.

TwoThousandAcresofBlueSkyThinking · 30/06/2024 12:30

When a woman is raped and murdered in India, her name becomes the most searched item on porn sites. Let that sink in.

Jesus shuddering Christ.

Terror. This isn't about having sex, it's about raping and terrorising women, changing their lives forever.

I find the way that you are posting lacks any thought or compassion and so will leave this thread.

Yes, it's me that's the problem, not the men we are talking about. Really?

What thoughtful or compassionate post have you contributed, because I can't see anything!

No, I am not voting for Reform.

My reference to religion, is that religious people are supposed to be good and respectable aren't they? Which this flies in the face of.

I must have missed the references to Christianity... Not one mention of priests which is much closer to home. Again, the issue is men.

I think for many people it is an inconvenient truth when men from non white / muslim countries rape and kill women so nobody wants to talk about it. The bbc is largely left wing men who are terrified of any taint of supposed racism being attached to their name should they report on such atrocities. Plus men will always protect and prioritise men over women.
The truth reported in a factual manner is not racist. Societies where women’s clothing and conduct are controlled are by their very nature places where women are seen as less than men. Rape is the punishment for daring to step out of line.
Misogyny is as old and as detestable as racism but standing up against it is far less popular and fashionable.

Well said. Disgracefully true.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 30/06/2024 13:13

Did you see those studies conducted with men in the West about whether or not they’d commit a sexual assault against a woman or child if they were guaranteed not to get caught? The majority said that they would.

This is about men as a group rather than religion or sex. They would carry out all kinds of depraved acts like this if they could get away with it.

I’m baffled by that comment too. The women being victimised have all our thoughts and compassion. The male attackers gave no compassion and deserve none from us.
ActivePeony, what did you mean?

Doesn’t surprise me in the least. Visited Cairo in my early twenties. Absolute misogynistic shit hole. Would never go back to Egypt. The level of verbal abuse from men was insane. We ended up confined to our hotel room. Couldn’t even use the pool as the male hotel staff abused us.

TheaBrandt · 30/06/2024 13:29

Also one word. Cologne. The left wing media didn’t report on those inconvenient attacks. When the Guardian finally did a columnist wrote that it was actually the women’s fault for having iPhones and western lives that may have made the men feel sad or some such shit. Not bought that rag since.

That's terrible, I hope you complained. It must be so weird for men to see women in bikini's or topless, when their own female population is covered from head to toe. Not that that excuses anything, but I'm not sure how young men are supposed to compartmentalise this. It must be a huge shock to the system.

And yet we all know it happens.

We wouldn't know if that was true.

The race/religion can't really be an explaining factor when so many women are raped and killed in the UK every year by non-Muslim men.

This is about men, not Muslims.

Sunnyyy · 30/06/2024 13:35

I had similar experience in Morocco. Stuck in our hotel room as men would touch us in the street. I would never visit a Muslim country again.

For a lot of men it’s all about power and their own status.

A man I vaguely know was sent to prison for beating a man who sexually assaulted his sister. Said man himself has raped at least two women that I know of.

His anger was that someone had attacked his sister. Like she was his possession.

When the story of that was being discussed in the staff room at the time at least two other people knew of a man who had raped or sexually assaulted someone, yet was furious at something happening to one of their women.
