Anyone in Bristol Central voting for POW?

It’s close in this seat between Greens and Labour.

Green canvasser (male) came to the door this evening so I asked what the local candidate’s position is on single sex spaces. He immediately launched into a monologue about trans rights, talking about trans suicide rates as they are such a marginalised group, and that the issue of single sex spaces and trans rights has become toxic and everyone needs to be kinder about it. He doesn’t feel comfortable talking to me about it, because he’s a man. I pointed out that he’s there representing the views of Carla Denyer, not himself!

Anyway, he’s basically talked himself out of a Green vote from me, which is something that I had been considering. Interesting how he immediately mentioned trans rights when I had simply asked about single sex spaces - it’s clearly not something that Carla will be supporting, so that’s me out.

I’m toying with voting Labour, but increasingly think I might vote for KJK and POW party, just so my GC voice is counted.

Is that pointless?

I’m an NHS worker in a field where GC views would probably get me fired, so this feels like the only way I can have my (anonymous!) voice heard!

Does anyone know why kjk chose to run in Bristol? What was the strategy behind this?

maltravers · 02/07/2024 00:25

I had assumed the point of KJK standing in Bristol was to bring the Greens’ barking gender identity views into full sunlight for your ordinary Bristolian voter.

@WishingOnACar
Yes I think it matters - it's scary when you see the rape/ death threats women get for not pretending men are women, also some employers target women for punishment too if they won't lie about this. And then MPs say it's both sides!!
So I just look at canvasers blankly and say I don't know.

Well it is both sides, ever seen kiwifarms?

I've been using examples form kiwifarms when showing my candidates how problematic online homophobia and transphobia are and asking them about it. They are all in agreement it's hateful and very vile.

AlisonDonut · 02/07/2024 03:25

A...I thought users of Kiwi farms were all evil Nazis so admitting you use Kiwi farms makes you a Nazi by your own calculations?

B...doesn't Kiwi farms just repeat what other people say....thus proving #OperationLetThemSpeak is working?

Drandthemedics · 02/07/2024 04:50

Thanks @maltravers if this were the reason wouldn’t it have become obvious by now? I don’t think it has been raised by kjk very often? Did she raise it in the televised debate? (I missed it)

maltravers · 02/07/2024 05:00

Yes, my assumption may be wrong. Who knows! TD seems all right and better than the Greens in their current state of madness…if I were a Bristol voter (I’m not), I would vote for TD and to keep out Denyer, having seen the malign influence of the Scottish Greens.

Have literally no clue ...

Yes, some of us have noticed.

Most people don’t know it even exists. You live in a parallel online universe that touches very few people’s lives, and you don’t understand that your reality and much of your language isn’t theirs.

In the ordinary world, people understand that women are adult human females, men can’t become women, children should be protected from corruptive ideology and Troon is a town in Scotland.

Turboislander · 02/07/2024 09:12

KJK said in her opening statement that one of the reasons she was there was to encourage Thangham to speak up for women because she has been completely silent on the issue. Was a bit disappointed that she didn't mention the Greens at this point (although she did in her closing statement).

I'm going to vote for Thangham because I really don't want the Greens to get in.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 02/07/2024 09:45

I thought Thangham came across well.

So I gather from the responses kjk stood in Bristol to highlight the Green party’s barking stance on trans and to encourage Thangham to speak up. Did this happen?

It certainly didn't happen at the hustings. In her closing speach KJK highlighted that the Greens had been involved in several accusations of bullying and also criticised Labour and the Lib Dems for their policies. Only the Lib Dem addressed her points on this. I can't remember the order in which they gave their closing speeches (think Carla went first, whereas the Lib Dem definitely came after KJK) so perhaps there was no oppurtunity for them to respond but I guess they could have done so outside of the hustings if they really wanted.

Sausagenbacon · 04/07/2024 16:21

Kjk attacked all parties. And spoke well.
I thought the seating order was interesting- left to right..Greens, Labour, Tory, reform , POW and lib dem.
The compere sat between the Tory and reform.
So thangham and Carla could 'not hear' kjk.
It's funny that thangham gave a good speech on gaza (imo) which will lose her votes here, but it emphasises with absolute clarity how little interest she has in gender issues (because OBVIOUSLY she can't speak about that)
Thank God for kjk

Sausagenbacon · 04/07/2024 16:23

Kjk was limited by the fact that, apart from the opening and closing speeches, they answered questions, none of which were on gender issues (the problem of being a single issue candidate) but she did well to bring her perspective to it.

Drandthemedics · 05/07/2024 13:33

It turns out that kjk is not a good politician and so the POW is sadly doomed. She picked the wrong constituency to stand and the tactics she used didn’t work (as she didn’t get any publicity and the big names like Carla Denyer and Thangam were not forced to speak about The Issue). Such a pity, it could have been great

Sausagenbacon · 05/07/2024 15:37

Yes, she's an ordinary woman who's got 5he balls to stand for an important issue that the likes of TD and CD have no interest in.
What a shame that she didn't get someone better to do it eh?
I hate the way posters are so keen to pull her down.

'Some Blokes Stabbed Another Bloke' .

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/07/2024 15:45

Some kids, I think. Horrifying example of the knife crime that's rife among teens, and zero to do with whether women believe males can be women.

RadicalisedPastThePointOfSalvation · 05/07/2024 16:10

It’s amazing isn’t it, one minute we’re crusty old frumps that everyone ignores just like the racist old aunt at Christmas, the next we’re so influential among teenagers we’re responsible for a rise in knife crime.
