Reports of the trial at the time state that the girl had self harmed and attempted suicide. I hope she has been able to get help and put her life back together in the years since the original incident. I also hope that the publicity around this criminal doesn't set her back or cause her further harm.

I hope she's in a good place too - but she very well may not be and all the people putting her rapist into a feted competition on a world stage could very well cause her actual harm.

The fucking evil bastards.

He doesn't like to be referred to as pedophile.

Thas what happens when you knowingly groom and sleep with a preteen girl. You are known as a pedophile.

He’s clearly getting his reputation back. I think the article only uses the word paedophile once and that’s in the snippet of him whinging about being called paedophile.

dougalfromthemagicroundabout · 26/06/2024 11:33

I hope at the very least the British team refuses to play him. Or anyone in that team.

BeachTeam NL on instagram have turned off the comments on the post announcing him and his duo partner as on the team, you mustn’t call a rapist a rapist but it’s fine for them to represent your country.

He might end up with a gold medal. What is wrong with the rest of the team? No protest? No refusal to play with him?

BorgQueen · 26/06/2024 11:33

In a decent world, every other team would refuse to play unless he was removed but I doubt that will happen.

RiverF · 26/06/2024 11:34

This is beach volleyball the "sport" that made it compulsory for women to compete in bikinis

KohlaParasaurus · 26/06/2024 11:38

This is the Olympics, a sports tournament in whose culture of origin women were treated as possessions and the rape of children was accepted and celebrated.

pandasorous · 26/06/2024 11:39

I don't understand how it can only be 4 years for raping a 12 year old...

Fishcake15 · 26/06/2024 11:40

ArabellaScott · 26/06/2024 10:17

His sentence will never be over.

Hopefully it won't!

Something is evidently very wrong. Larry Nassar abused over 300 girls.

I'm surprised he was sentenced at all, judges seem to give precedence to the perpetrators potential future.

Oh, yes! I think I can't be shocked by anything any more, but suddenly I'm fucking raging again.

That was part of the child abuse scandal in the US. It went on, ignored for decades. Imagine what's going on in the rest of the world. The Dutch team have taken back a convicted paedophile. Doesn't say much for their safeguarding.

anyolddinosaur · 26/06/2024 11:50

His partner, Matthew Immers, is said in some reports to be a "recent" partner. Maybe it took a while to find someone to play with him.

According to MSN "The Dutch Olympic committee has yet to comment on Van de Velde’s qualification for Paris, with The Australian reporting that the country’s volleyball federation is still to ratify its final athlete selections." So still time for them to see sense and exclude him.

YellowAsteroid · 26/06/2024 11:52

Absolutely disgusting. There will be many young women and girls in the athletes' village.

I thought the Dutch were enlightened and progressive. Clearly not. Winning is more important than safeguarding girls & women.

somethingwickedlivesnextdoor · 26/06/2024 11:59

4 years for grooming a child he knew was 12, and raping her? Ridiculously lenient.

Cosmosforbreakfast · 26/06/2024 12:01

JFC the Dutch Sports Authorities have no shame. How is his poor victim going to feel seeing him paraded around and glorified as some sort of super star. Every other sportsperson should turn their back on him, refuse to be in his presence, refuse to compete with him, protest at him being allowed into the Olympic Village. He's a paedophile, a danger. Disgusting he can just do what he likes while his victim will be living a life sentence.

When he left prison, he went back to his old partner until 2018, then he was partners with Christiaan Varenhorst 19-22, then his most recent one, so 3 men that give zero fucks about playing with a paedophile rapist (without getting into coaches etc that support him).

https://uk.yahoo.com/sports/news/dutch-volleyball-player-raped-12-193257270.html

His lawyer at the time said “It’s plainly a career end for him”……..

From what I've seen of the Dutch press, this hasn't been mentioned. van de Velde has been back in the game since 2017 when he became a silver medal winner in the national championships in 2018. He has gone on to win gold 3 times and 1 bronze. As far as the Dutch are concerned, he has served his time and is good to go and his team mates are all fine with it. Such a sad state of affairs.

SmileyHappyPeopleInTheSun · 26/06/2024 12:09

Wtf are the arrangements in the Olympic villages re safeguarding under 18s?

You do wonder.

I'm frequently shocked at how little time is served for some pedophile rapists - but you do have to wonder WTF is going on here and is there more concerning stuff with entire organisation if this hasn't raised red flags and been quietly stopped.

Having raped a child, I find it surprising a man would seek publicity.

The Dutch and Scandinavians are ridiculously liberal about rehabilitation, with the view that everyone deserves to have a good life, after their sentence is served. I once worked with an ROV operator, who left a job on a Norwegian oil platform, along with many colleagues.

Two men had been streaming CSA videos on the platform and been jailed. They wanted their jobs back, were refused, sued and given compensation and reinstated. Most of their colleagues refused to go out to the platform, of went elsewhere.

Fucking brazen.

rumred · 26/06/2024 12:26

It brings home the message hopefully that just because someone is good at sport etc doesn't mean they're good humans. We put too many on pedestals and I hate it.
Disgraceful action by the Dutch team/selectors.

gardenmusic · 26/06/2024 12:28

He has the sort of looks that will adorn many posters and bedroom walls.
Lots of hormonal teenagers hero worshipping him.
If he wins for his country will he gain advertising contracts?
I can see the foundations of a 'sweet shop' being laid.
H e needs to be banned from the olympics and any memberships.
