The UN has been criticised for arranging a meeting with Taliban officials at which women will be excluded.

'The United Nations' top official in Afghanistan defended the failure to include Afghan women in the upcoming first meeting between the Taliban and envoys from 22 countries, insisting that demands for women’s rights are certain to be raised.
U.N. special envoy Roza Otunbayeva was pummeled with questions Friday from journalists about criticism from human rights organizations at the omission of Afghan women from the meeting in Qatar’s capital, Doha, on June 30 and July 1.'

I'm almost ashamed to say that I usually avoid reading the threads about the taliban, Chibok, and similar because the violence against women and girls is horrendous. There chances of receiving justice are zero as seem the odds that the situation will improve for them.

But I saw this thread and I'd read this article in the Spectator this morning which mentions in UN. Be warned though it is horrible

Are women being raped in Taliban jails?

It has been almost three years since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan. In that time, women have become prisoners in their own homes and targets of violence if they venture outdoors alone.  Now, the United Nations is investigating reports of...

Christ, the headline is enough for me. Thanks, cake. I'm afraid I avoid a lot of threads too, unless I'm feeling particularly robust.

This reminds me of the English museum that wants to restrict viewing of an Igbo ceremonial mask to men because the mask was traditionally only allowed to be seen by men. Cultural relativism is alive and well among the bureaucratic classes, especially if it applies to how cultures view women as lesser than men.

Why won’t this museum let women see its Igbo mask?

The museum is pursuing a policy described as ‘cultural safety’ which means that an African mask cannot be seen by women.

Does anyone care what the UN says or does any more? Remember UNWomen appointing Munroe Bergdorf as our representative?

EdithStourton · 23/06/2024 19:21

The UN used to be useful and relevant.

Honestly, I have nothing useful to say about this decision of theirs. What a bloody waste of space they are becoming.

TimGrantsNoAccessToWomen · 23/06/2024 19:23

I think it's worse than a waste of space, though. Because their name still carries weight. So it's tacitly supporting the exclusion of women.
