Judith Butler tells lesbian she should stay home if she doesn't want to see penises in female-only spaces

A non-binary gender theorist told a lesbian activist that she should stay at home if she doesn't want to see a penis in a female-only space.

Judith Butler made the remarks after being questioned over their views during an event on Thursday in San Francisco.

Local activist Amanda Kovattana questioned the 68-year-old over whether trans women who still have penises should be admitted to female only spaces.

Kovattana asked Butler: 'If gender is to liberate us, why can't I as a lesbian, have a d*-free space? A space that is for women only, without penises?'

Butler quickly fired back at Kovattana, saying: 'I think you can do that in your home', which was welcomed with applause from the audience.

“Get back in the closet, lesbians”. What regressive nonsense from Butler.

crowgift · 15/06/2024 01:57

she never fails to disappoint (at least she is predictable).

lonelywater · 15/06/2024 02:02

It would be, perhaps, more newsworthy to receive a report of Butler saying something, anything which wasn't completely hatstand. I really do think she just makes it up as she goes along, spouting the first thing that comes into her head, and its all ocean going bollocks.

Catnipcupcakes · 15/06/2024 02:03

Surely nobody listens to Judith Butler any more?

You'd like to think so, but apparently she had an audience, and they applauded her for telling a lesbian she should stay at home implyinga man's right to impose his penis on a women only space!! Angry

Judith Butler has called the rape of women at the Nova Festival "resistance" - I don't see how anyone expects anything from that disgraceful "feminist"

BackToLurk · 15/06/2024 07:51

I’m just surprised she managed to say it in only one sentence.

It says it was an audience of Butler fans, so they probably DID applaud!
I like the quotes they included at the end though 😂

WickedSerious · 15/06/2024 09:25

It'd be nice if Judith Butler stayed home.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/06/2024 09:26

Butler is a ridiculous attention seeker.

C1N1C · 15/06/2024 09:31

Is this a female conspiracy to get to see more penises?

Jokes aside, wo.wn need their own spaces, I don't think that's debatable.

Her perputual in/suffer(ability) has long — or at least in a post-Derridean landscape — been (if we can at all impose a reductive temporality), a source (without seeking a fixed and therefore mythical ‘origin’) of consternation, compounded by her lamentable (and entirely hollow and essentialist despite reaching for fluidity) philosophical acumen.

Brava!

Didn't some women try this (meeting at home) and a transwoman demanded entry? Or did I dream it? I've been searching but all the hits are about sad trans people's experiences.

WarriorN · 15/06/2024 09:41

Saw this on Twitter; Amanda sounds amazing!

She's published a book too that also sounds a really interesting read.

Love the title!

"The unexpected penis."

As far as I can remember, it was a support group for women (for a women's issue) which met in a Library and a man demanded that he be allowed to join. The group was under pressure from the library to be 'inclusive' of this male so the women decided to hold the meetings in a member's home instead. The male got the Police involved to try to force the group to invite him into the woman's house, claiming discrimination, but was told that they couldn't actually force the woman to do so.

It amazes me that these so-called progressive people can find headspace for ever more tiny slices of intersectional identity ("As a Basque Queer Former Catholic living with IBS...") yet cannot countenance there being discrete words for, and dialogue about the challenges, needs and rights of, humans of different sexes.

Was it the 1990s? early 2000s? when nobody wanted to 'label themselves' at all?
Making up for lost time, eh?Hmm

Rape support group, IIRC. They tried meeting at a member's house, after their usual meeting place declined to host them any more if they weren't going to admit trans-identifying males. So the a trans-identifying male turned up at the house and then called the police when the member refused to let the male into her house.
