Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I don’t think the comments went how they expected…

I realise the article is from January, but I couldn’t find any discussion of it.

Anyway, it’s the usual railing against Rowling - specifically, the fact Harry Potter simply can’t be cancelled despite Rowling being the biggest transphobe in the world. Despite the slant of the website’s content, the comments, bar one, are firmly pro-Rowling (& even that one isn’t actively-anti).

*the repeated attempts to cancel controversial series creator"
What a world we live in today. Sounds so dystopian. Hooray for JK.

NitroNine · 13/06/2024 01:24

I stumbled across the article in the OP while I was trying to find this article - I saw someone on TwiX beg JKR not to sell Harry Potter & she replied to reassure them she wasn’t going to (& not to believe clickbaity nonsense). Or at least, find AN article that explained why someone thought JKR might be going to sell HP. I suppose it shouldn’t be a shock they’d post such obvious rubbish. Not only is Rowling not going to sell the rights, after her death they’ll pass to a literary trust. Said Trust will be following her wishes & funds will be directed as she wanted. So the dreadful TRAs who talk about “taking Potter back after she dies” are doomed to disappointment. I mean, hardly a surprise JKR has outwitted them again; but may it be a long LONG time before we have to hear their tantrumming about it.

Also, I know that “Rowling is our Queen”^ but I hadn’t realised she’d got to the point of having “insider sources” of the same calibre of the “palace insiders” 😵‍💫

There are also several other articles floating about rambling on about the gross injustice of JKR, um, retaining her intellectual property. Apparently she’s just doing it to spite trans people. Or something like that.

^Rowling is our Queen,
Rowling is our Queen,
She didn't let the Bad Law win
Rowling is our Queen.

Rowling thinks of ev’rything,
Her plans are all-encompassing,
That's why FWR all sing:
Rowling is our Queen.

Quite good that the article is from January and the comments are closed. If it had been mentioned on here or on Twix, there would have been a whole slew of comments. Instead we see the unadulterated comments of people who happened to see the article and felt strongly enough to comment. Good to see so many pointing out she’s not anti-trans, but rather pro-woman!

teawamutu · 13/06/2024 08:24

This is childish, but the phrase 'quit being such a salty cancel pig' amused me 😁

QuickFetchTheCoffee · 13/06/2024 08:50

I've had quite a few goady Facebook posts about JKR appear in my feed and the massive difference in the comments compared to even a year ago is amazing. A year ago people were scared to side with her and anyone who did was immediately and savagely piled on by TRA (and Be Kind Brigade). Now the majority on the posts I'm seeing are very vocally siding with biological reality and there isn't much pushback. Good to see.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 13/06/2024 09:14

There's a new term for me the comments: salty cancel pig. I like it.

Yep! I think you just about sum it up there!
As soon as they start losing the argument, they shut it down.

I will admit to be wryly amused by the fact that I, an elderly heterosexual white male with very conservative opinions (that's "conservative" with a small "c"), including more than a few raised eyebrows at LGB activities, am more than happy to make common cause with them on this particular issue, even to the point of donating money to help stop the insanity of the Trans ideology.

Tries to cancel world's most popular author via their youtube channel with 200 subscribers

Fails.

Cries about it on aforementioned youtube channel.

That awful Jeffery child-groomer person popped up in my feed this morning crowing about JK 'losing' her rights to the HP franchise - but seems as usual he has got things very wrong!

I've noticed this too and have had people say it to me.
A year ago I'd often be a lone voice on FB threads, and now it's the complete opposite.

How can they 'take Harry Potter back' when they never had Harry Potter in the first place?

NitroNine · 13/06/2024 10:21

@VeryOldMan
In fairness, they close comments on articles after a certain time - it may well be that they left them open the standard duration. They don’t generally get many comments on their stuff - loads of articles don’t have any at all - so there being 6 doesn’t necessary mean anything. I know we’ve seen it happen time & again, but in this instance it actually might not have.

@OolongTeaDrinker
Honestly he couldn’t be more embarrassingly wrong.

The absolute gall of people to think they can "take Harry Potter back" from the actual creator who has been involved in everything about it. It enrages them that jk is not only successful and outspoken against them, but that they actually like or love the universe she created. Therefore it must be taken away from her so they can have it. Fucking raging, bittter arseholes. You love to see it in a way because they will never succeed

NitroNine · 13/06/2024 11:32

Someone claimed on TwiX that the article’d been taken down because it’s clearly a load of shite & while that’s not the case I realised it may yet happen so I’ve archived it for pointing & laughing at posterity. It does seem to have gone from the gossip site they used as a source though.

“Reading between the lines of this announcement, this feels like Rowling squeezing as much juice as she can from the Harry Potter orange before WBD inevitably buys her out to get rid of her, as the original stars won’t return while she’s still around,” Sneider wrote.

They make it sounds as though she is on the bones of her financial arse!

She could easily refuse them any further rights to her work and not miss the vast income that would be lost. As I understand it, she retained casting rights (and many other production rights) to the films, so the actors "refusing" to work on them as long as JKR is involved may be them making a virtue out of a necessity. TBH, if I were her, I wouldn't let them anywhere near any of my scripts again. Most of them wouldn't have careers without her anyway - they aren't particularly good actors.

Sandwichgen · 13/06/2024 12:40

Any film of The Cursed Child should be interesting. The child stars from
the first films are all of an age to play their ‘own’ roles as grownups and parents.

But I can’t see JKR getting on board with that. somehow

A bit like how they treat women

It isn't just she is uncanceable the cancellation is making her richer than ever.

JKR made as much money last year as she was doing back in 2011 when the last film dropped because they kept driving her sales up by advertising her stuff.

The massive attempt to stop the billion dollar success of Hogwarts Legacy made a game about kid wizards trend worldwide they made it seem as edgy as playing Grand Theft Auto or listening to grime. They gave it HUGE PUBLICITY and made playing it seem like you were a cool marauder sneaking around while Snape tried to stop you. Of course it sold like hotcakes.

While queuing in droves to go to HP theme parks.

Because millions of people associate Harry Potter with having fun as a kid and you are never going to change that and every day more kids discover the magic.

If you think JKR is big now wait till 2026 when the TV series drops.

As the Queen said in April 2023:

Dreadful news, which I feel duty bound to share. Activists in my mentions are trying to organise yet another boycott of my work, this time of the Harry Potter TV show. As forewarned is forearmed, I've taken the precaution of laying in a large stock of champagne.

Her royalty cheques keep going up. So this article is actually boosting JKR. Every time someone says she is cancelled she makes MORE money.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 13/06/2024 13:40

Her royalty cheques keep going up.

It's great how that happens. The more she's slagged off, the better her sales. It's like a version of the Streisand Effect, only better because it's making JKR shed loads more money.

A few months ago, I started to notice a shift in online newspaper comment threads (or maybe it’s just that more articles are open for comments). Most of the threads discussing feminism and related issues were overwhelmingly GC. Even in The Metro. The Metro for goodness sake! 😆
