Talk about creating a hostile working environment, clearly they haven't run this one past the lawyers

Exeter Uni lecturers 'pressured' to sign 'anti-transphobia pledges'

Lecturers at a top university say they've been 'pressured' into signing anti-transphobia pledges and declaring their pronouns.

"This is entirely voluntary". Yeah, right.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 09/06/2024 23:06

I'd be tempted to sign it in my new name of Phoenix Bailey-Forstater.

HelenaWaiting · 10/06/2024 02:42

FFS, the word is "allegiance". Thick tossers.

Ah, Exeter. So committed to being LGBTQ+ Allies that they have this internal scheme and they encourage staff to do the Stonewall one & become “Senior Allies”.

EdenPalmersTerfAuntie · 10/06/2024 06:33

Imagine thinking you're being clever and progressive by pressuring people to publicly deny biology? I wonder what their law department makes of this discriminatory, anti woriads, action. I'm starting to think that academia enjoys humiliating itself at employment tribunals.

Runor · 10/06/2024 06:35

Well, let’s hope someone takes them to court, it seems obviously discriminatory to me. I’m ready in the allotments!

RhymesWithOrange · 10/06/2024 07:04

This really is so much worse than the story makes out. It's a cock-up of epic proportions. An unelected, unrepresentative, unaccountable staff network produces something so awful and the university endorses it. Either it represents their views or someone dropped a ball.

YourPithyLilacSheep · 11/06/2024 16:23

Exeter university still has an 18% sex pay gap and a friend of mine, a single parent, is required to work on Saturdays for open days - it’s extra work with no TOIL (because academic staff contract). They have been trying to get the university to provide childcare for 3 years. Apparently, it’s “too difficult.”

we’ve had “green washing.” This is “rainbow washing.”

And so insulting. Is the implication that if people don’t sign it, they’re agreeing to discrimination against people on the grounds of sexual orientation or gender reassignment?

That they’ll break the law? I don’t think so.

The virtue signalling is off the scale.

viques · 11/06/2024 16:31

Are they also asked to sign an anti racist statement, or anti misogyny statements? If not why not?

I did laugh at the no dog whistles line, presumably to protect the dignity of the furry community, or the ones who aren’t furries but like to run about on all fours, I forget what they call themselves.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 11/06/2024 16:35

I think 1984 comparisons are way, way overused but it seems appropriate here.

tobee · 11/06/2024 16:40

“educate' themselves about how 'micro-aggressions, dog whistles and talking points' can be harmful to LGBTQ+ people”

Yes for god's sake talking points!!! Heaven forbid a university should encourage talking points!!!

🙄

YourPithyLilacSheep · 11/06/2024 16:56

Reading that, several of the modules I teach would be considered “dog whistles.” I explain the distinction between sex and gender and explicitly centre women and women’s work. Even point out likely historical lesbians.

Education is just one long dog whistle apparently

I've just seen that @YourPithyLilacSheep . It's gobsmacking. "It will also
address questions of collective action around getting the University to speak
out against the Report in a considered and constructive way." I mean, I hope they are in cloud cuckoo land in expecting the University to actually say anything about the Cass report but it's still so inappropriate.

I saw this from Exeter this week. Men are allowed to be men but the University's menopause pages can't bring themselves to use the word "woman". Tell me again it's not a men's rights movement.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 13/06/2024 14:43

If there is something wrong with the Cass report I'd very much like to know what it is, though I can't see it myself. To me the report looks rigorous and thorough though the results are unlilkely to please everyone. But that's how science works.

And on the other hand, if Exeter University is hosting an event that is specifically against evidence-based medicine for transgender health, or that is more generally anti-science when the results are not politically expedient, then I'd like to know that too.

We shall see!
