Just that really

I followed and re-tweeted GC accounts, acquired 200+ followers and now I'm suspended

I have appealed, but I'm not holding out any hope

Looks like I'm going to have to generate another email account to get on again

Anyway I am really curious how people here manage to get banned from twitter at all, what exactly are you posting??

That's a bit 'What were you wearing?' Christinapple.

I had/have 10 followers that are real. Some were pity-follows from (also-suppressed) blueticks as I am 'shadowbanned' (or whatever the Twitter terminology is) for my follows, my likes, my bookmarks of legitimate political and social positions. All WORIAD. E.g. free speech, freedom of association and against guilt by association. Others were even positions former UK Labour leaders held. The Overton window has shifted to make them seem not WORIAD, but they are definitely classical liberal positions. Positions that were contemporary to a Maoist struggle session//ideological lockstep way - which some say is the standard on the left now.

Around the time I felt shadowbanned, where your replies are hidden last in the 'nest' or even invisible/unclickable at all, a Twitter-maven commenter looked me up and confirmed I was suppressed on the platform. For a social app, it is bad for your account to like or follow comments or users you like!! Or to do that a lot. Seems counter-intuitive. I already spent most of my time on For You and not my Following anyway. I didn't only want to stay in-group.

I have never threatened or reposted threatening posts. I commented rarely e.g. one of my last would have been a reply denouncing the porn-driven rise in strangulation of women/teen girls for male pleasure. Maybe that, and reporting the veiled threat to KJK struck a nerve with some coomer techbro-trained AI at X HQ. Old Twitter used to itemise your wrongdoing and give you the option to delete whatever breached. Like others, I got nothing pointing to what I had 'done'.

Lastly, the Twitter files showed the company has banned and suspended different political views, so it's not a stretch to see GC views/users have also been suppressed there for a long time. It's not news. It's an election year, so I would not be surprised if there's a sweep-out going on. Probably commensurate with an influx, if the state of this board right now is anything to go by.

It feels like the opening chapters of The Handmaids Tale, where women slowly had their ability to interact with society restricted...

It's why events such as LWS are needed

Manhere2024 · 11/06/2024 08:59

I was just reading that a lot of gender critical accounts have been banned from Insta, eg SexMatters. Twitter I thought is currently a total free for all, and any banning can be appealed and reversed.

FannyCann · 12/06/2024 06:46

I lost my twitter account last year, about the time of Kelly-Jay's New Zealand exploits. Everything she posted came up with a sensitivity warning and I couldn't view a lot of it. So I tried to change my settings and when it asked for my DOB I unthinkingly put in the standard DOB I always use for any website that demands one - 1/1/2000
Bam 💥it closed just like that.
I foolishly hadn't done the maths. As I had opened the account back in 2010 I would have been underage when I opened it and they deemed my being underage as the reason to close it. I could have appealed - they offered if I supplied full ID and proof of age. Was I going to do that? Hell no. Remember Twitter gave the police Posie Parker"s (KJK) contact details when Susie Green reported her tweets.

So that was that. I have a new account with very similar name, just added a _ and have 670 followers.

But I still miss my old account. I had about 3500 followers built over the years, many of whom were nothing to do with gender stuff. A few people I had frequent interactions with and I have searched for them but just can't seem to get the name/twitter handle right to find them. It's not the same now. Of course I followed all the big GC accounts I had previously, then the algorithms etc send more. If I am in "For you" mode X seems to send me lots of TRA stuff - presumably for "balance". But I had so many other interesting people I followed and now my feed is practically single issue and frankly I'm so sick of it all, I need a change. I suppose I should make more effort to seek out different content - I followed African park rangers, and indigenous people in various parts of the world and that sort of stuff.
I tell myself it's just the stupid internet and read a book. But I do miss it. 🤷‍♀️

FannyCann · 12/06/2024 06:47

@Manhere2024 Instagram seems to be having a massive, outrageous purge at present. Big GC accounts, it's so blatant. Angry

AlisonDonut · 12/06/2024 07:05

What, Instagram? Owned by Meta? Whose global boss is Nick Clegg?

Nothing to see here.

mrshoho · 12/06/2024 07:31

Hi OP have you had any updates from your appeal?

Nope.

Not a word

Just keep appealing. I threatened to report them to Better Business Bureau but I'm not sure if that's what worked in the end.

mrshoho · 13/06/2024 22:07

It's a nightmare trying to deal with these organisations. Wiping accounts with no explanation. It seems to be happening on FB too.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 13/06/2024 22:20

Had an odd thing on twitter recently. It started telling me that my likes were public, even though my account is private. Then ?this week, it said all likes were private in order to protect people, or something like that.

Yes they are changing the settings so others cannot see who has liked a post. Is it to try and stop the witch-hunts and bots from blocking? It may work out well!

But I assumed that since my account was private, my likes were too. How would anyone see them? Then those messages started to appear every day.

Maybe they just sent everyone the warning messages.

Yes that's true, yes maybe just a general message

"That's a bit 'What were you wearing?"

I disagree, being banned from twitter is not IMO an analogy for victim-blaming rape victims.

Unless twitter has somehow thought you were a bot or spammer (were you using IP changing software?) then frankly you must have posted something rule-breaking. Almost nothing on there is against the rules anymore so clearly the threshold to be perma-banned must be very high.

I used to report racist/homophobic/transphobic posts on twitter (and it resulted in posts being removed and accounts banned) but ever since elon musk took over I don't even bother making reports anymore unless it's a threat of violence.

It will be interesting to see how twitter is dealt with when the UK finally gets round to implementing the Online Harms Safety Bill (which passed but ASAIK nothing significant has been implemented from it yet). I envision twitter being blocked when that happens, it wouldn't pass the bill's guidelines and I don't see musk being willing to change it to comply.

Twitter is now a porn site too and there are unconfirmed rumours elon musk will also remove the ability to block users. It's becoming a very unsafe site.

Same, seems anything goes now whether it's cosplayng, reference to "troons" or "back to your country.".
Bigotry abound is allowed to stand now it seems

Urgh yes sick of "nudes in bio" that's suddenly cropping up under every tweet, however innocuous.
