I've been terfed off X.com/Twitter

Gingernaut · 06/06/2024 19:38

Just that really

I followed and re-tweeted GC accounts, acquired 200+ followers and now I'm suspended

I have appealed, but I'm not holding out any hope

Looks like I'm going to have to generate another email account to get on again

I may have deleted my X account in the nick of time then!

I'd been finding it just unusable and unbearably toxic - I was an early adopter so had that account since whenever twitter started but didn't even want to keep it for sentimental reasons.

Those of you who persist - I salute you!

mach2 · 08/06/2024 11:21

i I'd be careful about doing that. They'll see it as ban evasion and they could eventually block you by IP. I know because it happened to me when Parag Agrawal owned it as Twitter.

Use VPN and Tor 😉

VPN and TOR on sites like reddit and twitter are the best way to make the site think you're a spammer or bot and either ban or shadowban your account.

Ah thanks. As you were!

Genderwoo · 08/06/2024 12:35

Received the exact same message last night. I thought they had to itemise what rule you 'violated'? I didn't get that either.

I was already a de-boosted account that liked, reposted but commented rarely (2 or 3 a week). Even did their housekeeping - by blocking my porn-bot followers, by voting in community notes and reporting explicit threats to other users.

Make your own moral judgements about an activist-staffed moral mess of an app, and join again via a different email, username and a device not yet used by you? I've found the app on Android phone has retained my 'following' list so if I screencap I can and will manually add back, slowly. I was too small to catch the attention of Terfblocker users ⬆ and I can be small again.

Twitter isn't itself important.

It is only significant because lazy journalists use it to stoke up sensational stories.

It servces no purpose in itself because it has so few users.

Only talking to the same people every day isn't really outreach or making connections. But like any platform has much more to do with the type of people you want to engage with.

Its just the illusion that its important because of how MSM manipulates what is happening there.

Its a bit like a local paper not bothering to find out what is happening in the region, but just going to some dodgy back street drinking hole, and then writing up 3 drunks having an arguement as a major news story.

It’s not important if all you do is chat on Twitter itself, but I’m starting to make some real life connections with women I met on Twitter, so it may serve some functions.

Have you appealed it? I did that this morning and immediately got a very brief, standard response: "Hello, your account was suspended due to violating X's rules. After reviewing for reinstatement, your account will not be restored. Thanks, X"

That was IT. I emailed back with more of a personal statement than I'd given in the appeal form, saying I was a long-time user, had a variety of interests and followed a wide range of accounts (true), that I enjoyed engaging in debate and discussion, that surely X's lifeblood was its users and the ability to debate, but that debating entails opinions, and that I didn't think mine were at all reprehensible.

I got a slightly less depersonalised reply: Thank you for reaching out about case .... This case has now been closed and cannot be reopened, but we want you to get the help you need. Here's a link to our Help page or you could open a new case.

So ... maybe I'll do that. I replied, again asking for some concrete details of what they thought I'd done to violate their rules. I will be ASTONISHED if I get a reply.

I'm definitely too fighty on social media so maybe this will be a lesson to me, but I'm also outraged that there's so much toxicity on that cess-site, horrible threats to women, porn images, far right rabble-rousing - and in all probability I was reported by a TRA who's done their fair share of toxic posts. Who knows?

You can get a fixed IP address through a VPN to evade detection.

How long before joining and following a load of accounts?

I found that if you joined and followed loads of accounts, it auto suspended you. I only managed to stay on by liking one or two, and then adding them in small numbers over a very long time.

oh dear, I only joined X for GC content, so of course did this. Guess I'll get banned too

Dumbo12 · 08/06/2024 18:32

I think mass reporters are all over today. A thread that was up from yesterday morning on here, with no deletions, was suddenly pulled, as had "too many posts that breached guidelines " odd that it only happens at the weekend....

socialdilemmawhattodo · 08/06/2024 20:34

I seem ok for now. Logged on tonight - forwarded, commented etc. But please challenge obviously directly through the platform, but also directly to the directors. And uk MPs no way should an overseas company operating in the UK be able to not comply with UK law.

Genderwoo · 09/06/2024 12:42

Yes, Glomofnit, got two automated replies. Someone on Reddit had this work for them (cap in hand blah blah). https://www.reddit.com/r/Twitter/comments/overhd/i_got_unsuspended_here_are_some_personal_tips/
I literally repost without comment, comment rarely (as I ain't got no algorithm) and 'like' a lot. Shoot me for the liking or following - how dare I !!
I did report a veiled threat to KJK. May have got on the X radar for that?

Same here

Reported threats, violent content, porn bots and blocked a lot of gratuitously nasty accounts

I came for the supermarket follows, really

This is pretty much the future - public disconnection without explanation so that we censor ourselves about everything, all the time.

I was intrigued by this so looked it up.

Number of users is only one of many, many metrics though.

What matters more than numbers of users is how easily you can interact with people who are interested in a topic.

WhatsApp, Messenger, Snapchat and probably some of the others there I'm not familiar with are mostly for private messaging, it's not somewhere you can post public content.

It's almost impossible to build a decent audience on Facebook through organic (i.e. not paid for) content these days.

YouTube, TikTok and Instagram are great but they take much more effort and you need to be good at creating video or visual content.

I don't see anything on that list that's a serious rival to Twitter in terms of ability to reach people outside of your own circle without having to become a social media expert.

Plus Twitter makes it really easy to read journos, authors, experts in all sorts of topics.

If Elon fucks it up it'll be a real shame.

CliantheLang · 09/06/2024 20:21

I've changed my IP address by simply turning off the router for a few minutes. I guess it depends on what kind of set-up you have.

This method isn’t guaranteed to work because your ISP might give you the same IP address again. However, the longer you leave your modem unplugged, the higher the chance your IP address changes. If unplugging for a few minutes doesn’t work, consider leaving it unplugged overnight.

Your ISP must use dynamic IP addresses in order for this to work. Most do.

https://www.comparitech.com/blog/vpn-privacy/change-ip-address/

Christinapple · 10/06/2024 02:23

Using a fixed IP address won't help, it will still be recognised as belonging to a VPN instead of a direct connection from your ISP- which twitter and reddit etc prefer, otherwise suspicions are raised that it's a bot/spammer/hacker/banned user etc

Anyway I am really curious how people here manage to get banned from twitter at all, what exactly are you posting??

I reported a post from a gender critical user on twitter that had an image of someone striking someone else on the knee with a baseball bat with the caption along the lines of "how to stop parents taking their kids to dragtime story hour". Received an email that says "After reviewing the available information, we want to let you know [user] hasn’t broken our safety policies." On any other social media website that would be grounds for a permanent suspension.

Elon Musk has effectively made twitter a free for all where rules and moderation now ceases to exist at all.

And yes, Twitter now allowing porn is a terrible decision. Now watch as the onlyfans spammers multiple like germs.

LauderSyme · 10/06/2024 02:39

That's fucking ridiculous, given the extraordinary volume of hateful, vitriolic tripe posted on X without repercussion 😡

mach2 · 10/06/2024 06:37

X, formerly known as Twitter, has updated their terms and conditions to explicitly permit adult content and pornography on the site.

Fall of Rome stuff. Maybe that's why he changed the name to 'X', though "Xitter" would be a better name.

Beware the in-flight movies on SpaceX!

RobinEllacotStrike · 10/06/2024 07:36

I got in trouble last week on X for using the word cis.

Voyage34 · 10/06/2024 07:57

witter has its faults but you can’t publicly speak with politicians, journalists, etc, on any other platform. It’s unique. That’s why it’s so dangerous for it to be captured by ideologues who hate free speech, democracy, etc.... If its good ebough for The Tate Brothers itss fit for purpos unlike the days of Ms Gaddy,THE "I DONE NOTHING WRONG ROTH and the fbi/cia revgolving door 5k sacked by Musk 2nd day data harvesting,, go on 8 chan fit in well there or LINKIDIN

Yes indeed, that was the very same connection I made the other day, while thinking about my suspension. It's the chilling effect of ensuring self-compliance and self-censorship in order to continue 'participating' in public debate and life. I feel like I've had my wings clipped. Twix was the only place (aside from lovely MN!) where I felt able to voice dissent about TRA and extreme ideologies. My Insta is for the crafts I do and sometimes sell, my FB is about friends and family. I'm not about to post GC comment in either of those.... so there we are! Self-policed on the sites I'm still active, and silenced on the one where I spoke my mind. Sad
